Shine on the cobbled streets,
 Amongst the chaos, darkness stirs,
The pavement, an abundance of feet,
 Distinctive, interesting buildings,
Towering over people as they walk,
A place rich in history, much to take in,
And there they are; a group of men gawk,
I try, but I canât hide my surprise,
I should have been able to predict,
 The menacing, predatory eyes,
I mean, it was the Damâs Red Light District,
I try to ignore the windows,
Where the scantily clad women stand,
But the feeling of unease grows,
These women; supply and demand,
 People swarm through the crowd,
Aware, but not wanting to partake,
The hectic hum constant, so loud,
But behind the windows; silence, I shake,
I am enraged by this portrayal of women,
Blatant; many eyes they will greet,
I and them; we are akin,
Except they are displayed like pieces of meat,
Like cattle, they are there for the taking,
Who is thinking about what this is teaching?
But look at the money they are making,
Oblivious to the souls this scene is reaching,
Ignorant to the minds that are affected,
A womanâs choice; who are you to question?
Although it is known that some are there, unelected,
A product of our own incessant oppression,
And still we miss the obvious connection,
Between reducing women to only their bodies,
And so many girls striving for visual perfection,
This portrayal, everywhere we see,
 It feeds their insecurities,
Let women choose this, if a genuine choice,
But by allowing this, in the publicâs streets,
It is telling women, âforget your voice,â
While the windows show women, but no men,
It is saying, âthis is your place,â here, for them,
It is not the women in the windows that I condemn,
It is the ones in authority, who allow this to go ahead,
The ones who are currently putting laws in place,
To stop passers-by from staring at the women,
Turn your back to the windows, ignore this space,
Unaware; they are overlooking the issues therein,
Because by displaying women in windows,
By publicly commodifying their bodies,
We are teaching girls as they grow,
That this is what they should aspire to be,
Iâve said it once and Iâll say it again,
Women should do with their bodies as they desire,
But when itâs always women and never men,
In life, men will always be higher.
