Experiment No 4:
In this experiment, I printed an image of the Ta Prohm Temple onto Fabric (a method I discovered earlier in the semester) and then used hessian string to ‘trace’ the fig trees in the image. I hand stitched the string onto the fabric. I really enjoyed this experiment and how it turned out. I really like how the use of the string emphasised the fig trees with its 3D effect.
Cool work!

Our intention behind the pdf creative work was to portray the relationship of humans with nature, and a create a dystopic futuristic perspective of this. This world is caused by the human activity upon the environment, where humans are contributing to the melting of our own cities and the destruction. Within our 12 page format, we decided to create a dialogue of the images with text where we referenced a variety of sources including the bible - to portray the beginning and purity of sin/destruction through adam and eve and two plain masks. We were also inspired by John Milton’s words from his 12th book “Paradise lost” where he defined modern society’s sound as “a jangling of words unknown”, the sound element of our work involves multiple layers of various industrial sound effects from car engines to passing trains, all merged together in a loop, as if a form of language; permanent and consistent. By adding features of an interactive PDF, it allows viewers to not only visually explore the work customised to their own pace, but also engage with the various media such as sound, video and external files. The two external files hidden in the twelve pages opens into a certain poem that gives viewers a further insight to the concept behind the words or pictures displayed.
The materiality and visual representation of our work was also influenced by Chinese contemporary artists such as Huang Yan (please see earlier posts for our influences from his concepts of Chinese philosophy) as well as Chinese porcelain art to which we hoped to replicate the quality of by pouring wax over masks. This use of materiality was used in the hope to replicate a sense of fragility where the artworks held a strong likelyhood of being shattered. We hoped to further resonate our concept through this where ourselves and what we’ve created can be so easily destructed. The burning of the wax to create a melting effect that resulted in smoky, distorted cities is symbolic of the burning of fossil fuels that contribute to the world becoming warmer and warmer. (global warming)
