River systems are vital to our local ecosystems. They're also hot-spots for fishermen. Many simply discard their fishing line where they sit - leaving it for the local wildlife. What many do not realize is fishing line is not biodegradable. Not only does it make the riverside look bad but it also poses a great danger for wildlife which may mistake it for something edible then have to pay with their lives. If you go fishing or just happen to be enjoying a river park, look around for discarded fishing line. Be sure to pick it up and dispose of it properly! You'll be making the park better for visitors and in turn making it safer for all the animals that call it home. Taken at Toad Suck Park/Arkansas River in Conway, Arkansas.

GENEVA, CITES Meeting Commercial Tiger Farming July 27th, 2012 "The UK and India have called on China and other countries to ban tiger farms because they undermine conservation efforts. But China responded strongly at the meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species in Geneva, challenging delegates to "show us the evidence that [tiger farms] encourage poaching of wild tigers.... China banned trade in tiger parts in 1993, but since then the country's large-scale commercial breeding of tigers in captivity has boomed. There are now more than 5000 tigers in around 20 farms run as tourist attractions by politically influential businessmen. There are also tiger farms in Thailand, Vietnam and Laos." Did you know that at one point the Mountain Lion was not the only big cat who ruled the United States? Jaguars used to be found in the southern most parts of California, Texas, and even Arizona but now only reside in Latin America. Between 1960 and 1970 over 18,000 Jaguars were killed every year for their pelts leading to their eradication in over 40% of their historic range. Since the enactment of the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) in 1973, Jaguars have made a big comeback compared to the other big cats yet they still face major threats from habitat destruction and over-hunting of their prey by humans. Luckily, organizations like Panthera exist to protect the remaining Jaguars and ensure they exist for future generations. You can learn more about these projects by going to http://bit.ly/aoyIJC.
I see by the Memphis Zoo site that you work with the penguins. I have what may be a strange request, but my future daughter-in-law loves animals especially penguins! Hello!I have actually been away from the Memphis Zoo for a few months due to my research project on Tigers so I am not for sure what the procedure is now. I do know there are volunteer opportunities as well as internships for those interested in the African Penguins. But, if you're looking for a day-trip event, check out the Animal Encounters that the Zoo provides on their Birthday section of the website. Over the past half-century alone, African Leopard populations have dropped from 750,000 to a staggering 50,000 wild individuals. Do we want to live in a world without animals? That is what we are facing.

After a few bandage replacements and a lot of fish, this White Breasted Cormorant finally returned to the wild today after being in our care for a few weeks. His new home is a protected marine reserve outside of Cape Town where he will hopefully never encounter human caused trouble again.
