NYC Post Offices: Seventh Circle of Hell
"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds."
bahahahahahahaha YEAH RIGHT.
Until I moved to New York, I don't really remember loathing the post office like I now do. And it's not just one specific location -- from Chinatown to Sunset Park to the Bronx, post offices in and around the city here are notoriously awful. They are always at least 15 degrees too hot, humid, dirty, line-filled, and at least one person standing near you in line is either mentally ill or on heroin. Then there are the employees. Once, at the post office on 23rd street, the guy in line ahead of me proceeded to step up to the next window before the Postal God summoned him, so Postal God yells, "I didn't call you up! You know what? I'm tired of this! I'm taking lunch!" Then he whipped out a "closed" sign, and slammed it down in front him and left.Â
So a couple of days ago, I happened to be on the Yelp page for my local post office on Varick Street to see what their hours are and happened to scroll down to the comments section, which was filled with only 1-star reviews, most of which are hilarious.Â
So for your reading pleasure, I present to you... Excerpts of NYC Post Office Yelp Reviews.
"This place is a disgrace." (Kenneth D)
"This is the WORST PLACE EVER!" (Mary W)
"The manager, Oliver, is an A-hole." (Lillian L.)
"Edith at this location is an animal." Â (O.L.)
"I hear rumors about how supposedly difficult USPS jobs are to qualify for. Is it because you have to be the most incompetent of the incompetent of the U.S. workforce?!" (Irene P.)
"The methods and 'organization' at this location are akin to a developing nation." Â (Elise F)
"If you enjoy standing in an interminable line all day, only to be accused of being a 'line crasher' by a 100-year old clerk who is biding her time until her pension kicks in, this is the place for you." (Robert K)
"I have left note after note, made requests online, talked to people, etc. to ask them to leave the package in my hallway, but they never do. Â [If] I never had to deal with this shitty place again it would be too soon. Thanks for sending back all my birthday presents and never even letting me know they were here, assholes." (Keely S.)
"Entering this post office is like entering the Land That Time Forgot. Abandon hope, all ye who enter, because you will not be on time to your next appointment." (Linda S.)
"The letter carrier serving 41st between 6th and 7th avenue does not understand that his/ her job is to deliver the mail to the correct address... Â This is their duty. Yet they seem to think that whatever is easiest for them, goes. 'Oh, the letter I grabbed says 637 but I'm in front of 661 already. I'll just leave it at 661. Why walk back?'" (Li M)
"Join an hour-long line of people waiting to collect parcels. It typically takes 5-10 minutes per person, due to the significant challenges involved in ... finding a box." (Josh M)
"Doesn't get worse than this place. Maybe in Haiti or Tijuana or something. It's impossible to in and out in less than a half hour for anything. The employees are slower than sloths. I moved a month and a half ago and still haven't received a SINGLE piece of forwarded mail. Btw I moved DOWN THE STREET. Still serviced by the same post office. Went in to ask why I'm not getting any mail- 'Oh the mail forwarding was canceled.' Why? 'I don't know.'" Â (R.G.)
"Did they even have A/C on here today? Â I was DYING in here while waiting for an Automated Postal Center to open up (they have 2 here & no official line for them). Â It's a nice building and it's certainly better than the location near my home (the inner circle of hell) but hot day means HAVE YOUR FREAKING A/C ON!!!!!!" Â (Monica T.)
"Lady at passport center at 2pm: are you here for a passport?
Me: yes
Lady: no passports today
Me: why?
Lady: what do you mean why?
Me: the sign here, and government website, says passports can be obtained from 10am - 4pm, everyday
Lady: well, today's a different day. No passports." (Terri C)
"Terrible terrible terrible! my pickup driver randomly chooses the days he "feels" like passing by, tries not to scan my USPS scan form even though it clearly states on the form that he is supposed to scan it. I gave him packages, they disappeared and never showed up, when I questioned him, he told me if I didnt "trust" the post office to deliver my packages, then I should "use" the post office...WTF how do these people get a paycheck?? go to work, do the OPPOSITE of their job, and still get paid??" (Delicate Raymond J)
