“Have you seen a dolphin necklace? I was wearing one yesterday. But by the time I got home, it’d gone missing. I thought I put it in my bag. But I haven’t seen it.” Holding out her phone, she let the other see a picture of the necklace from when she'd been wearing it at her friend's birthday party. It was an important necklace. Given to her by her late grandmother on her mother's side.

At the lack of gratitude, Phoebe couldn’t help but feel a little taken aback. Perhaps the girl was too upset, or maybe she didn’t take compliments the same way Phoebe did when it came to her art.  So Phoebe pursed her lips together awkwardly, and glanced at the stone beneath her feet, for lack of knowing what to say.  “Yeah…” She admitted quietly, before clearing her throat. “But I guess the good thing about a second try is there’s a chance to make some parts better than the first. I just mean… Like, sometimes when I have to re-paint something… I find it turns out better a second time.”

Gemma shrugged at the other’s attempt to find the bright side in having to remake her models. “Or it could turn out worse. It’s a risk.” Perhaps she was being unnecessarily pessimistic, but she didn’t really see the need to be overly positive about the situation. Her models were broken. She’d have to spend hours either fixing or remaking them. Not exactly something she was looking forward to doing. Shaking herself out her negative thought pattern she looked up at the other. “Sorry. I’m being terribly rude. I’m Gemma Fontaine. I’m sorry for bumping into you. Is that your art folder? You mentioned painting?”

Emilia laughed. “The only thing Odin about it is the necklace, really,” she admitted taking the pendant with symbols in her fingers. It was a convenient piece of jewelry she’d had for years now and didn’t remember where it came from. But it had been the thing to inspire the rest of the ensemble. The only thing Emma could remember buying for the costume was the mask. “The rest is just meant to be dark and raven-esque.” Her shoulders went up in a small shrug. “I didn’t have too much time to get anything done and I’m not too creative when it comes to clothing, unfortunately.” Thinking it wouldn’t be such a good idea to share a whole ton about herself, Emma attempted to redirect the attention.

“Have you been to this party before? Are you from around here?”

“It’s not terribly important,” the redhead shrugged. “I’m sure no one’s going to criticize you for it. I’m sure you have plenty of other strengths.” While clothes seemed terribly important back in Marseille, she had never quite found it important. And she’d certainly never been too concerned about whether or not she was creative enough in the way she dressed. 

“A couple times,” Gemma nodded. “I live in Kingsholm, yeah. Do you? I mean, I don’t know how many people from around the country would want to come here for something like this.” Looking around, she wasn’t quite sure how many people she recognized from in and around Kingsholm. After all, all the makeup and costumes made everyone look different than they usually did. “Besides, isn’t Kingsholm kind of a hotspot for people like us?”

“I’m probably as Norwegian as you can get,” Emma said with a sheepish smile. “Although I did spend some time in Sweden.” There were some wonderful times Emilia could recount in Sweden but the whole affair with Aaron had severely tainted her experience.

“Oh,” She responded at the explanation, smiling a little wider and straightening up in genuine interest. “That’s amazing. Not so sure about the terror methods,” Emma let out a small chuckle. “-but it’s Hallow’s Eve. And everyone should definitely support a passion for nature.” She shrugged at the question. “Yes, more or less unspecific. Although I was inspired by Norse mythology when I saw this mask. You know the God Odin?.”

“Ah. I’ve always wanted to visit Sweden. I just haven’t quite gotten to it yet. I’ve only heard good things about it, though.” A young Gemma had always assumed that adult Gemma would have plenty of time to travel. But her ambitions as a researcher in Marine Science, including her PhD, were now taking up the majority of her time. And to think she’d only started expressing interest in the subject when she was 14. 

“Exactly," Gemma beamed proudly. With a nod, she looked more carefully at the mask in question. “Yeah. I can...kind of see it, I think. There’s definitely something...Odin-like about it. Not a bad idea for a Halloween costume.” The redhead could understand why some people would want to go for low commitment costumes. They were certainly cheaper and easier to create. She didn't even look at her own costume as being particularly sophisticated or intricate.

Helena stared at the young woman for a long moment. Silently wondering what it was like to be so worked up about opinion over fact. It should be, as a journalist, easy to care for such things. But for the most part, Helena just didn’t. Especially if it had to do with a topic she wasn’t curious about. “You know someone like that? I can’t tell if I find them interesting or boring.” And… There goes the slight interest. “Boring. Definitely boring.” Like she was becoming right now. She begins to dig through the deep pockets of her knee length sweater coat in order to pull out her smokes and lighter. A habit she’s picked up in the last few months.

With a rather dramatic sigh, the redhead nodded. “I do. And...it definitely does get boring,” she shrugged. “And it slowly grates your nerves. Because they get all up and arms about it.” She rolled her eyes as she spoke. There were countless incidents where someone she knew reacted rather badly to any spill, scratch, mark onto their jacket. It was particularly bad in France and had recently become a reason she didn’t like going back to France for home leave. After all, it’s there where the rather fashion conscious rich French milled around and made a rather big deal out of their clothing. Spending far too much money on money. Preferring couture over even the more expensive brand clothing. Her family had once been part of that very crowd. But her parents had distanced themselves from it years ago. Much to the disappointment of her maternal Parisian grandmother. “I'm... Genevieve by the way. I feel like I should introduce myself after bumping into you like that.”

Gemma was home alone when the front doorbell went. Half expecting it to be her parents returning from their outing, she stood still in shock at the stranger at her door. "Who are you and what on earth happened to you?!” She stood still for a couple seconds, before deciding that it would do no harm to let her in. Stepping aside, she gestured for the other to enter. “Please. Come in. I-I’ll see if I can...clean you up. Or call someone. Would you like me to call someone?”

“Yeah, Aksel,” he confirmed, hesitant to say her name in return in fear that he might get it wrong. Emma? Gemma? Genevieve? he thought, almost-but-not-quite sheepish in his momentary lapse in memory. He was shit with names. “Think we can call it even with this,” Aksel said, plucking at the fabric above the wet stain for good measure. “I fuck up your fish, you stain my shirt. Valid retribution cancels out any need for an apology, by my judgment.” It wasn’t like he really went out of his way to put together a phenomenal costume, anyway. Composed entirely of things he already had in his closet—plus a coat borrowed from his dad—Aksel made a mostly lackluster Jack Torrance. “Oh, uh, Jack Nicholson’s character in The Shining. Misplaced my plastic ax somewhere, though,” he said, clicking his tongue. “Guess that’s what I get for leaving my shit around. Probably one of those life lessons my parents taught me that I should’ve listened to, huh?” His weed-slow brain caught up in processing her advice about cleaning up his shirt and he wrinkled his nose, sensing the spill grow sticky, and glanced over his shoulder in vague hope of a sink suddenly appearing to him. “Hey, do you know where the closest bathroom is? Your mom’s actually inspired me to be proactive with this.”

“Gemma,” she prompted without judgement in the silence that followed his confirmation. Having a mother who frequently forgot the names of her friends, she had gotten quite used to repeating names. And it certainly taught her not to judge those who also frequently forgot their names harshly. After all, her mother was an intelligent woman. And yet, names frequently slipped her mind. When he suggested calling it even, the redhead couldn’t help but laugh. “Yeah. I guess so. I really am sorry, though. I should’ve been paying more attention.” It felt like a repetition from their last encounter. But it was hard not to feel bad when she'd been such a clutz. And to think she usually saw herself as not much of a clutz. “Oh. I kind of see it now,” she nodded slowly as he explained who he was dressed up as. She’d watched the movie once, at her friend’s insistence, but hadn’t bothered to rewatch it since. It simply hadn't been her type of movie. Perhaps the reason why she hadn't been so quick to spot who he'd dressed up as. When he asked her where the closest bathroom is, she looked around to locate it. Once she’d spotted the hallway where the bathroom was, she turned back to face him. “Yeah. It’s down the hallway next to the drinks. And then it’s on the right, I think. Might not be such a bad idea. Now that the stain is still wet it should be easy to get it out.”

“France- oh that’s fine. That’s great. It’s a wonderful country.” Emma said quickly, grateful there was a common language between them anyway. 

“Oh, don’t worry, it’s not really part of a costume… It’s more an old coat I bought back in college when my friend took me to this… thriller book convention,” she admitted with a small laugh. “I tried to be creative for the gala but also comfortable. At least you didn’t get anything on you.” Emma gestured to her. “Especially when you look so great. A forest spirit, maybe? Or something from the comics? I’m not too acquainted with them but something about the look is familiar.”

“Yeah. It’s pretty nice. But so is Norway,” she nodded. She had some vague memories from living in France. Most of them were good. But the negativity that had led to the decision to move to Norway to keep Gemma safe shrouded those memories with a dark cloud. “Where are you from?”

“Oh, thank goodness. Champagne stains can be quite tricky to remove if they’re left to dry into the fabric.” Her expression briefly turned into a grimace at the recollection of how vicious champagne stains could be. “Poison Ivy. She’s a comic book super-villain. She’s basically an eco-terrorist. She’s all about protecting nature. So you’re not far off,” she beamed proudly. “So, what are dressed up as? Or is it just a unspecific ‘Halloween’ look?”

 || “well…if i’m seeing you being around here again, i’ll let you know.” mused with a short smile, shaking his head again, at the following apology. briefly he wondered if this how others felt, when he himself, was overly apologetic. “ahhh…these? naahh, really the only thing i’m buying that’s new, are the raining boots and jacket. everything else i’m like, having already. so really, no more worrying.” he finalized with a friendly smile, nodding along at the explanation of the woman’s costume. seung took some ( hardly ) any interest in comics, too busy being obsessed with learning about what literally, hung over their heads. though so not to seem rude, he took the new information. “ooh…that’s very neat. it’s really very nice, your outfit.” stated again; brows raising in mild surprise, as she managed to guess his own costume. “ah-ha, yeah! it’s like being one of my favorite movies, and i really love her; as a character. the only thing that was like being hard, was dying my hair. i couldn’t find like the right color of the blue, for wigs. so i’m just dying it myself, instead.” he spoke excitedly, eyes lighting up at sharing his costume choice. “so you’re speaking french, too? really, french seems so much more easier to learn right now. not like norwegian, ooff, it’s like being way too hard to learning. barely, my english is decent too.” mused, finally realizing she’d been speaking french, earlier. ||

“If you're sure,” she nodded, hesitantly. “Huh. Is it temporary dye, then?” She wasn’t quite sure she’d ever be willing to dye her hair for the sake of a costume. She was proud of her red hair. Comic book characters like Poison Ivy had in part helped build that pride in the face of ginger jokes. Seeing red hair on proud and powerful women like her, even though she was technically a 'bad guy', had given younger Gemma them sense she could be proud and powerful too. “But Coraline is a pretty good movie. Have you read the book it was based on? It was a lot creepier.” One of Gemma’s childhood friends had been a British girl. And it was thanks to her that the redhead even knew who Coraline was. It was at her insistence that Gemma had even bothered to read the book. She had never been much of a reader herself. Certainly not of dark fiction novels like Coraline. Most of the books she’d read were admittedly about marine life. “Yeah, it’s my mother-tongue. I’m originally from France.” Gemma nodded slowly as he spoke of the struggles of learning languages. “It’s always a lot easier if you start off young, too. I mean, I would say my Norwegian is decent. But I did move here when I was 10. So I did get the opportunity to learn the language from a relatively young age. And I was even younger when I learnt English. How old were you when you started learning English?”

“That’s true, I’ve lived here long enough that I should know Norwegian well, but I tend to stick to English since that’s my safest bet,” She smiled at the redhead as she spoke. Besides dancing, Asher wasn’t really great at picking other skills up, and no matter how hard she tried to master learning Norwegian, she simply didn’t speak the language as well as she did with French and English. After all, her mother tried to make sure they were able to speak their native language despite moving to America, and there wasn’t much to do when she wasn’t dancing and she was being homeschooled anyway. Life wasn’t exactly exciting for her especially when she was a Silver. “I’m Asher, it’s nice to meet you, Gemma.” The brunette extended her hand and shook hers for a moment, before letting go once again. “Ah, Marseille? I’m from Bordeaux. But I didn’t stay there for long. It’s really great to hear someone speak French though, it’s not like there’s many people around here that knows the language.” She said, before waving a hand at her apology. “Honestly, don’t worry about it. It’s not like anyone will really notice, and I didn’t really make that much effort with my costume anyway.”

“It probably is. Most people in Norway do seem to know at least some English. And there seem to be quite some foreigners in Kingsholm, like us.” When Gemma first moved to Kingsholm, she’d been surprised by the amount of people who spoke English. And she was even more surprised by how many people in Kingsholm were not from Norway themselves. But it hadn't stopped her from learning Norwegian. Probably because of the many vacations her parents had dragged her on across the country. Besides, she'd been young enough to easily learn a third language while being surrounded by its native speakers. “Likewise, Asher.” When Asher mentioned where she was from, the redhead nodded in recognition. “Ah. Pity. It’s a beautiful area,” she smiled softly. It was when the brunette talked about her costume that Gemma really took notice of the other woman’s costume. “Ah. I see.” There was a brief pause before she asked: “Who are you dressed as?” She struggled to figure it out herself. She wasn’t quite sure the costume contained much detail that she personally recognized.

There was a part of Aksel that was nagging at him for even showing up, a vague sense of guilt clawing at the back of his mind. He was an adult, he reminded himself; he would be a quarter of a century old come February, even. He didn’t have to feel bad about holding some things back from his parents. And showing up at some party at the Institute was nothing. It was impossible to think he would actually be in danger there, not when surrounded by people who held such power, but yet the faint woozy nauseousness remained as a conscience-stricken symptom. God, he needed a drink or something. What he didn’t expect was for one to then be inadvertently flung at him. He took a step back in surprise, looking down to assess the damage. “Faen, of-fucking-course,” Aksel swore, before getting a glance at the perpetrator. He blinked in shock. “Oh, shit. Hey.” There was an awkward beat, her next words indecipherable to him. “It’s fine.” He held his wet shirt away from his skin with a small grimace, his brain slowly loading up the memory her face triggered. “Uh… damn. Zoology, right? Or, ah, wait — no. Marine Biology? You had those little broken shark guys.”

Gemma mentally scolded herself for having decided to play around with a drink as expensive and stain inducing as champagne. Maybe it was a better idea to stick to playing around with her powers in the bathtub. At least that way the mess would always be minimal and easy to clean up. It wasn’t until he started to recall what she was studying at Kingsholm University that she actually looked up to see the other’s face. Recognition flashed across her features as she did. Her cheeks began to heat up as she recollected their first encounter. “Oh. Yeah. That was me. Clearly I’m quite clumsy lately,” she grimaced. She almost wanted to say that she wasn’t usually this clumsy. That he just happened to meet her on the two occasions that she was mkaing a right mess of things. “Aksel, right? I really am sorry about your costume. Champagne can stain pretty badly if it's not cleaned up quickly. I'd wash it as quickly as possible, if I were you. My mother used to spend hours cleaning champagne stains off of tablecloths if she hadn't wahed them immediately after a party she hosted.” Her eyes then skimmed over his clothes, trying to decipher who he was dressed up as. “Who are you dressed up as, by the way?”

 || momentarily shook, from the unexpected contact; he pulled the smallest of faces. rationally knowing, the liquid would try. but also knowing that until it did, his ocd would be relentless; in reminding him that it was there. waving a hand in ‘don’t mind’ fashion, seung accepted the napkins; attempting to speed up the drying process. “ahhh…don’t mind, don’t mind. it’s really, being alright.” assured, with a slight smile. not understanding the language she was speaking, he cocked his head in confusion. smiling awkwardly nonetheless though, again, he assured everything was fine. “ahhh..really…it’s like nothing, to be so over worrying about. it’s completely gonna be dry, in like thirty minutes. i’m being like…super easy to look over too; so like, it’s fine. really…i’m surprised you’re the only one to like, bumping into me. honestly….i’m always getting like trampled, so i’m used to it.” rambled off carelessly, brows furrowing in thought and concentration now. “maybe you’re being like that…ahhh…catalyst…? the one that starts, the entire thing, you know? like…since you’re doing it first, now everyone, will be doing it to me.” thought aloud, before shrugging. eyes drifting over the other’s costume, momentarily. then speaking up in curiosity. “what is it, your costume? it’s like…very nice…very…green.” ||

Gemma frowned when he suggested she would be the catalyst to him betting trampled on. “Oh, no. I seriously hope that’s not the case.” She instantly felt ten times worse about spilling her champagne on him. Clearly the young man didn’t have much fortune in life. And now she was only adding to his misfortune. “I seriously hope what you're wearing wasn't terribly expensive. I really am sorry.” His question about her costume didn’t come as a surprise. She’d figured not too many people would know who she was dressed up as. DC comics weren’t readily available in Norway. There were only a total of 4 comic book stores in the whole of Norway. Though, she was hoping she wouldn't have to spend the whole night explaining who she was. That would suck the fun right out of it. “Poison Ivy. She’s a super villain from the DC comics franchise. She’s basically an ecological terrorist. She’s pretty much one with nature. Hence all of the leaves.” She gestured her dress with a small smile. It was now that she really took a good look at the other’s costume. The yellow jacket and coloured hair stood out. “Wait. Are you...Are you dressed up as Coraline?” Her pronunciation of the name Coraline was distinctly French. One of the few things that still gave away her French roots. For the mot part, her English was accentless, thanks to the several years she'd now spent studying in English..

A stain like such wasn’t going to determine how his evening was going to end up. Surely, he couldn’t speak for anyone else’s behalf. It was a minor slip up even due to his state of distraction as he wandered aimlessly through the crowds, witnessing bodies engulfing themselves on the dance floor. He had always been a calm and collected guy. Of course, he didn’t try to allow people to walk over him. Though, the latter is sometimes sacrifice was needed in the work place when people were funding your dreams to come true in your hometown. Not quite how others would’ve handled the current matter but the point was mute. It was the one evening where Rylan could enjoy himself with care as visions of the future of the eve would be an experience for the first time in public. “Nei det går bra. Det er bare en kostymer rett?” Under the dim lights, his mouth corners raised toward the female. Though, moments later, he broke into a chuckle at how she predicted what his costume was. He believed it was a dead giveaway but the evening was young and he’ll hear off the wall guesses from other boozed individuals. “Det er en død gi bort, va?” Having always been a classic for dressing up as a character from the iconic years of the seventies or eighties since this was what he grew up on. “Poison Ivy?” Returning a guess toward her way, a brow raising in curiosity of his guess. “Glede å møte deg, Gemma. Jeg er Rylan. Alt er bra med kostymen egentlig. Jeg vil bare advare alle i kveld om hvordan du er drinker-spilleren,” he joked immediately, making sure it road through his tone to know there was no offense and he was just enjoying himself. Shaking the red head’s hand, he grinned toward her before breaking off the shake, “Hva er dine krefter?”

Gemma laughed softly at his comment about it only being a costume. “Jeg antar at du har rett,” she nodded. Perhaps having spent the first 10 years of her life in a culture that put a lot of emphasis on clothing and appearances. “Du kan si det.” Her father was an avid fan of Indiana Jones. Having been heavily exposed to the franchise, she could spot an Indiana Jones costume from miles away. She broke into a proud smile when he guessed her costume right. Her hands reached down to straighten her dress, an almost automatic response. “Ja, jeg antar at det er ganske åpenbart også.” Part of her had been worried that not everyone would recognize who she'd dressed up as. After all, Poison Ivy was a supervillain from an American comic book franchise. Not a lot people in Norway payed too much attention to the American comic book world. It hadn't been much different in France either. She certainly would not have had the same problem had she dressed up like Ariel. The redhead couldn’t help but laugh as he joked about warning people about her. “Kan ikke være en så dårlig idé. Jeg har vært ganske klønete i det siste.” With the handshake broken off, her hand fell gracefully by her side. “Vannmanipulering. Derfor hele champagnen hendelse,” She offered him a sheepish smile, gesturing at her champagne glass. “Hva er ditt?”
