So stop me if you've heard this one.
But what if we, as a society, just stopped participating in holidays in a capitalist way?
A big holiday is coming up, and you want to get together with friends and family and enjoy good food and maybe play games or something. Great! Instead of purchasing a bunch of food from giant corporations, shop local! Shop small! Or get together with people and make what you can with what you have!
Instead of buying presents, get your friends and families a promise: I'll come help you clean your garage out, I know you've been putting it off. I'll take the kids to the park so you can have the house to yourself. We haven't just spent the day together in a while, I'll give you uninterrupted time.
Got kids and really want to get them toys for [insert holiday here]? Get together with a group of people in your community and do a white elephant exchange with toys they don't really play with anymore.
I know there's already a lot of people that do this sort of thing, and I really think that if enough people* started trying it, they would find themselves much happier, they would spend way less money, and that money wouldn't be going right back into the corporations.
Now, I'm sure there will be a lot of "what ifs" in this scenario. And just know that of course there are exceptions. I'm not saying "don't shop at all on holiday weeks/weekends/months". I'm not saying you can't buy something nice for your mom/spouse/etc. I'm saying: if enough people stopped literally buying into the capitalism frenzy of holidays and did more to interrupt their cash flow, it would benefit everyone.
Let me know what you all think. Try to boost this if you can. Make suggestions. Tell your friends. Tell me if you think I'm missing something. Adapt this however you want. I'm tired, and I really think this could work more than trying to do a week long single company boycott.
