Alina and the Darkling’s interactions, pt. 13
Siege and Storm- Chapter 2
Alina’s like a broken record- Where is Mal? How is Mal? What about Mal? MalMalMalMalMalMal… I understand they got caught by the enemy, but we never see her care about anything else, so it’s hard to do so with her. The Darkling seems to be pretty done with her too. He missed only one step in her list of priorities:
This is hysterical. Couple of people kept in captivity are NOT allowed to talk to each other! How inhumane! Malyen’s obviously unharmed- Alina wouldn’t forget to mention bruises-, yet we’re supposed to despair alongside her.
Next we’ll see the Darkling invite them for five-course dinner, and Alina will whine about lack of her favourite vintage of wine.
I guess the reader’s supposed to feel heroine’s desperation, instead she’s just pathetic. Malina DO love their melodrama. Can’t they fucking control themselves for five seconds?

because they’re forced to leave each others’ sight? They’re not some unruly children, they’re supposed to be trained soldiers and legal adults!
Look at the choice of words! For a prisoner, Alina’s acting as if she were the one to dictate the terms.
We were right back where we’d started.
… and whose fault is that?!
Why is the Darkling still kind? He knows all he needs to do is threaten Malyen, yet he doesn’t yell, doesn’t hit, doesn’t do any harm, merely requires their presence at the moment. Is this the horrible, terrible, cruel villain I’m supposed to loathe? Reacting to heroine’s I want I want I want with soft “Of course”?
Aleksander’s once again touching Alina with no other reason than physical contact. Is it even conscious? Is it simple touch-starvation? Is it their Bond calling to him? Does if affect him more strongly, since he’s older?
Once again, we’d benefit from the Darkling’s POV. “That’s not why.” Is the bite a mark to compensate for those Alina caused him? Is it mere pettiness? Intentional merzost-manipulation? He’s obviously pleased there’s not undoing it. His concern indicates pain wasn’t the goal…
What are Aleksander’s plans at this point? If nichevo’ya are “just the beginning”, does he intend to use merzost differently? Does he feel like he gained some kind of understanding he lacked back in the day he created the Fold? Or is it only about replacing living, breathing soldiers with canon fodder he can make?
The Darkling doesn’t seem to be fully in control of his impulses, when Alina’s concerned. He’s constantly initiating physical touch, but instead of simple manipulation, it looks more like compulsion. Sometimes it reads like it has more impact on him, than her. I don’t think it’s necessarily about feelings, but need of emotionally starved individual, stricken by metaphysical closeness.
