No need to worry: I love getting asks, and there's plenty of Johnny to talk about here!
I've drawn quite a bit of Gyjo art as offerings already, and others have also submitted their own wonderful works to the shrine. You can view all the Gyjo offerings to the shrine here. It's probably obvious that I do like them as a couple, but I've never really gone into the “why”.
To put it simply: Johnny and Gyro's love is a miracle.
Do you know what a miracle is? It's a shift in perspective. When you witness a miracle, something so profound that it cannot be explained by the logic you currently hold, it forces you to think and see the world differently.
You can clearly see this in real time from Johnny the moment he and Gyro meet one another: Johnny witnesses the spin for the first time, seemingly stands up on his own two paralyzed feet, and his perspective changes.
But it's not just one off moments such as those that paint the whole picture. It's the collection of moments strung together that reinforce the miracle.
The weight of the past bears down on Johnny, one that constantly tells him he's a burden, that he's unlovable, that he's doomed.
Gyro proves this perspective wrong. He never once abandons Johnny, despite the many times Johnny pleaded him to. He never thinks of Johnny as someone who weighs him down; if anything, he’s proud to have Johnny by his side. He gives Johnny the hope that he can turn his life around. Gyro shows Johnny a miracle, a new way of seeing things.
But this isn't one sided, of course. Gyro himself undergoes a massive shift as well. He's trapped in a prison of familial expectations he never agreed to, but swears his loyalty to it since that's all he knows.
Johnny shows Gyro what freedom is. What it's like to feel passion and drive for something because you want it. To give into his emotions; his sentimentality. Johnny shows Gyro a miracle, a new way of seeing things.
The shift in the mind's perspective that occurs with miracles is one that, put down to a single simple word, would lead in the direction of God, or Love. I don't think it's a coincidence at all that these two were quite literally searching for God together, or that they were chasing after miracles. The real miracle all along was the love they shared along the way.
No matter how you view these two together, platonically or romantically, I think it's abundantly clear based on their actions that they care about one another and trust one another in the end. And really, those are the two core things you need to build a relationship of any kind. To set the record straight: I love Johnny and Gyro together in virtually any context, it doesn’t have to be as a romantic couple. Even as friends, there’s something so special about them.
That being said: the foundation is strong and certainly there for romance. The two of them have personalities that, while quite different in many ways, give contrast to the other while simultaneously helping each other grow. I could go into detail about how they’d kiss or bicker like an old married couple or the crazy sex they’d have, but I think the underlying content is more gripping than the form it presents itself; the “content” being their foundation for miracles, the “form” being how it’s represented through their actions and words.
I have never seen such a clearer example of this kind of miraculous love in a work before. It just so happened to be presented in such a way with symbols that mean a great deal to me that it clicked so easily within my mind. The most profound thing about Johnny and Gyro is: these two gave me my own miracle, a shift in perspective. These two fictional dumbasses reminded me of what love is, and continue to do so.
