Ugh I hate when all of my professional friends are busy, like bae wake up, I need you to read this cover letter
“Is not the most erotic portion of the body where the garment gapes? In perversion (which is the realm of textual pleasure) there are no “erogenous zones.” […] It is intermittence, as psychoanalysis has so rightly stated, which is erotic; the intermittence of skin flashing between two articles of clothing (trousers and sweater), between two edges (the open-necked shirt, the glove and the sleeve); it is this flash which seduces, or rather: the staging of an appearance-as-disappearance.”
— Roland Barthes, The Pleasure of the Text

They should build a me that doesn’t get so hurt. Who can get pierced and heals over harder at the injury site. Who has thick roots for feet and cooling ice for finger. Who’s shapeless and formless as the sea. Have you dropped a brick into the sea? How far did it go, were you able to watch it? Did it hurt the sea at all? Do you wish it did?

James Baldwin, A Transition Interview, 1972
"The shift from the Afro-Caribbean zombie to the U.S. zombie is clear: in Caribbean folklore, people are scared of becoming zombies, whereas in U.S. narratives people are scared of zombies. This shift is significant because it maps the movement from the zombie as victim (Caribbean) to the zombie as an aggressive and terrifying monster who consumes human flesh (U.S.). In Haitian folklore, for instance, zombies do not physically threaten people; rather, the threat comes from the voduon practice whereby the sorcerer (master) subjugates the individual by robbing the victim of free will, language and cognition. The zombie is enslaved."
— Justin D. Edwards, "Mapping Tropical Gothic in the Americas" in Tropical Gothic in Literature and Culture.

The ultimate horror of the zombie, originally, was that an enslaved person could not escape bondage even in death.
