to love ceaselessly is not to love recklessly. to love ceaselessly is simply to love despite. despite being hurt, despite being heartbroken, despite enduring pain. it’s the act of not allowing the downfalls of life to harden you, but rather to learn from them and move on. but it’s not to love without reason, and to give anyone the luxury of being loved by you. do not get these concepts confused. romanticizing staying past the point you should has led so many people to perpetuating toxic relationships, whether it be with family, friends, or romantic partners. and it’s fucked up that on top of that pain, they have to feel bad for deciding enough is enough & pulling the plug

i don’t like cutoff culture in terms of the fact that it has propagated the idea of being weak: of cutting someone off after one argument. but in that same vein, i also don’t like the idea of staying for someone when a long, abusive pattern has made it very clear they won’t be changing anytime soon. it’s okay to love someone and still recognize that you can’t have a relationship with them. don’t give up at the first argument, but don’t stay because you’ve heard people say that true love is staying around people even when they’re repeatedly hurting you. allowing someone to keep on hurting you is not love—it’s submission.

this applies to romantic friendships, but honestly i think anyone who’s struggling with family abuse needs to hear this especially. if you’re hesitant to cut off a toxic family member for the sake of “family loyalty,” please understand that being selfless cannot come at the expense of your well-being. evaluate your situation closely & ask yourself if ties to an abusive parent, sibling, etc. can coexist with good mental health. also ask yourself if they could truly change, or if you’re feeding yourself a fantasy. being selfless is very important, but you should never feel yourself atrophying because you’re so focused on helping other people instead of yourself.
