The History of the Hair Extensions

The modern hair extensions we see everyday have their roots going back thousands of years. From the wall paintings of the ancient Egyptian culture we see examples of wigs and human hair extensions which have not changed a great deal over the centuries. There have been great cycles of human hair extensions over the years where they fell in and out of favor. The Romantic Era of the 19th century brought back elaborate hair extensions and wigs which adorned the courts of Europe. The Victorian Era of the late 19th century also refined the use of hair pieces for both men and women which then fell out of favor as the 20th century dawned with short hair styles that came into favor during the Roaring 20’s. Fast forwards to the World War II era when hair extensions became favorable again as women began creating extravagant hairdos. However, this interest was dwarfed with the arrival of the British Invasion of the 1960s which fostered an era of big hair, most notably the Beehive where wigs and hair extensions were quite commonplace for several years until yet another downturn occurred with the end of the Vietnam War and the 1970s. However, big hair was back again in the 1980s, but it took the arrival of the 90’s when less expensive hair extensions, particularly the clip in hair extensions that became quite popular for women who wanted a different look for clubbing, work and different social events. By the turn of the 21st century, hair extensions have become ingrained in the popular culture as millions of women use human hair extensions and clip in hair extensions on a regular basis. Victoria Beckham, one of the famous Spice Girls who married football superstar David Beckham, helped in her own way to popularize the versatility of hair extensions as she and her husband became the most photographed couple of that era. With her continually changing looks, particular in her hairstyle, millions of women were being influenced by her use of clip in hair extensions and helps promote the natural human hair that many of them used. Today, the acceptance of human hair extensions crosses generations as older women look to these extensions to help cover their own thinning hair. Both natural human hair and synthetic materials are used to create extensions which can be of the clip in variety, used as temporary measures for special events or permanent extensions that last up to four months.
