It started out as a joke, recognizing that the candidate I was voting for, the only candidate I could vote for, has the same name as the one in the song.
But still, the song is more than that. It’s probably the ABBA song that Mamma Mia did the most injustice to, reverting it back to a Latino lover romance and taking out all the guerrilla. By the time this is posted, fascism may have already won in Brazil. I’m gonna listen to this song until then, so I can try to keep some balance between fatalism and hope and keep myself sane. I voted against fascism today, and if I have to to the same again… you know how it goes.

Perched smack-bang on the top of the list of “Wonderful Underrated VideoGames that Sorely Deserve a Remake or a Remaster or a Sequel or a Something But Will Never Get One” list is 2000′s No One Lives Forever. Made by Monolith Productions (the studio behind the F.E.A.R games), there was talk recently of remastering and re-releasing their irreverent and hilarious first-person shooter series but it quickly became apparent that no one knows who owns the rights to the NOLF franchise and it seems that it will remain in limbo forever. A real shame because NOLF and its indomitable protagonist Cate Archer are some of the greatest unsung treasures in gaming. Bum-badee-dum-bum-ba-dee-dum.

What makes a work of art queer? Narrowing it down a bit, what is it that makes a song gay? I think I've seen a post here somewhere where they listed all the kinds of gay songs, and I remember disagreeing completely. I started thinking about doing my own version, but I didn't and it slipped my mind. This Universal Love album made me remember it, though. The general idea seems to be that the answer to my earlier question is just pronouns. So if you take any "straight" song and just flip the pronoun, ta-dah, you have a gay song! Now, I'm not denying there is something interesting about this little subversion. But there are some complications. The first one is that it implies that the singer and the author's voice are one and the same, and that's not exactly true. In fact, there are some cover versions where a singer sings about the same gender, but there is no implication on their sexuality because it's just a take on a classic. Still, you can say there is some bending of the norms going on. But it's funny that the remedy against that has always been to change the pronouns. They have always been used as a quiet agent of straightening more than of queering.
They are also something of a battleground over which different ideas of queer art fight. You can certainly frame it, as the article I linked does, as universality vs specificity. But you can also frame it as the subtext vs the explicit, with the right use of pronouns as a sort of "coming out" for the music itself. But if the pronouns are the explicit, what is the subtext? It can be a lot of things, but I'm gonna try to narrow it down to two, that are often concurrent. A song can come from queer spaces, and it can speak to the queer experience. I always think about Diana Ross' I'm Coming Out. She's not queer as far as I know, and there is no love interest to have the "right" pronoun, but it's a queer classic, and I don't need to explain why.
Projects like Universal Love end up making gay songs that are explicit but have no subtext. The name itself is telling: between specificity and universality it seems to shoot for both at the same time, and land safely on harmless and inconsequential. And there's nothing wrong with that in itself, it's just an album. But one thing about it really makes me a but angry. The only song that comes with a gay subtext is Mad About the Girl, their version of Noel Coward's Mad About the Boy. The song was mainly recorded by women, but it's not hard to find a version by Noel himself. It's a sad, beautiful, old song about gay men's desire, written and sung by a gay man. Valerie June's attempt at a lesbian version is fine, but in the end it makes a song that has no subtext and no specificity, just the right pronouns. And can you even call them right if girl and joy don't even rime?
In the end, I think I just find these kind of attempts to celebrate queer art shortsighted. It's as if people haven't been doing it for a long time, and it erases our history. We shouldn't let it do that.
Phonogram came to me when I was lost. I was 19 and I remember wanting to listen to some music. I looked at my albums and there wasn’t a single one I felt excited by. So I had a mild existential crisis, re-read The Singles Club and decided to finally try to listen to the music they were talking about. I feel like that saved my life in some way, reawakened a love for music that had disappeared way too soon and gave me some music I could relate to in a way I hardly ever did. And I needed that. I felt like a mix of Laura and Lloyd that didn’t even have music to hang on to. Phonogram was my Long Blondes and my grimoire. A couple years later I am still fucking lost, but hey, I just played Lloyd, I’m Ready To Be Heartbroken on a whim and I think maybe I am too.

I was told recently about a school that was shamed into changing its school motto. The motto was “I hear, I see, I learn.” Nothing wrong with that per se. Unfortunately the motto was in Latin, and the Latin for “I hear, I see, I learn” is “audio, video, disco”.
What the fuck that’s the best school motto ever change it back
