Well, in finnish, the word for moth is "yökkönen", from "yö" (night), the suffix "-kko/kkö" which has many purposes but one of them is to change any word into "person involved with doing something with the root word", and the dininutive "-nen". So the name of moth is "little night creature".

But coming back to the diminutive meme, the existence of yökkönen would imply the existence of yökkö, the big (or at least medium-sized, or non-small) night creature. Through a happenstance completely unrelated to moths or other insects, "yökkö" is the finnish vernacular word for a night shift nurse.

No, but this is actually (sort of) canon.

See, part of the conceit of the PotC trilogy is that all myths are true. Nearly every supernatural element in the franchise has a root in some real world mythology or pirate lore, although some of them are mashed together.

Another thing is that they take place at the end of the Golden Age of Piracy, and the more the map gets filled in, and the more the Royal Navy takes power, there less room there is for the mystical and supernatural in the world. This is explicitly called out in At World's End with the death of the kraken:

Barbossa: The world used to be a bigger place. Jack: The world's still the same. There's just... less in it.

The only way to access the world of the supernatural is through the supernatural itself. You can only get to the Isla de Muerta with Jack's compass that points to whatever you desire, or if you already know where its is. You need Tia Dalma's map to find the edge of the world. To access the supernatural, you need to already be immersed in it.

The pirates world isn't flat, it's round - but because the edge of the world exists in myth, it therefore exists in reality. The pirates are able to find it through supernatural means, but if, say, someone like Norrington just sailed in the same general direction, he wouldn't end up in the same place.

If you look at it in a particular way, the Pirates specifically function by FAIRY RULES: obscure codes of law and formality that they are irrevocably bound to abide by...except when you get the wording wrong.

When we go to Tortuga (or any pirate controlled space) we leave behind the sensibilities of the real world and enter this bizarre perpetual revel of debauchery and violence that could never sustain itself in a world bound by sense.

That makes Jack our Puck character, a trickster of tricksters who can invert your fortunes just by letting him talk to you.

It also makes Will into a changeling, born of the fairyworld, adopted by mortals, and fated to return to it in what makes for a doomed love story. Hell, one might say that the reason Will's swords are SO GOOD is because they contain an element of myth about them: they're the IDEA of swords, true to how they would be in myth.

My thought- if Shane is planning to leave, why stay in North America at all?

He can cut off everyone he knew, and leave. Name changes in Ontario are public record unless a privacy exemption is applied for, but Quebec's are protected. If he times it right, he can get his new passport issued and new name shortly after his final game. Ilya should have Canadian citizenship by the time, so he can travel on Canadian passport.

My first thoughts were the UK or Australia- buy a house somewhere LGBT+ friendly- first thoughts were Brighton or Margate in UK- nothing specific for Australia.

If he leaves of his own free will, how much can even a PI do to track him down?

A guy who looks kind of like Shane Hollander packs his most precious belongings, gets on a flight to somewhere they don't care about hockey.

A day later, he gets on another flight to his intended destination, and applies for a visa. Ilya meets him there, Anya going through quarantine.

They have access to their own funds. They're not in the country illegally. They're a world away from most anyone who will recognise them. They're no more limited than any other queer couple, can go anywhere.

They're rich and in love. What are the odds a hockey fan will see them, recognize them?

Then again- slightly more boring story. Just two guys, living in a place. Less of a community than a small town/village in the middle of nowhere.

While I like the idea of visas on arrival from a third country (i.e. not your country of nationality or current residence) leading to a private life elsewhere, they are not the usual standard across the globe. Shane and Ilya would, realistically, need to apply for visas, and have them issued [as a sticker in their passport, or electronically] before being allowed to board the plane to the UK or Australia as Canadian citizens. And I say visas here, not ETAs, because the presumable goal is for them to settle in the country so a tourist visa for a short-term stay wouldn't accomplish that goal. but this is fic so y'know, handwave what you want!

If you do want more realism: The UK used to have the investor visa where you could pay like, 2 million GBP if I recall rightly, but they got rid of that in 2022 or 2023. they have the 'innovator founder' now, which is more geared towards entrepreneurship with a recognized start up or something like that.

Australia, on the other hand, does have (did? it's currently closed to new applications so that can just be ignored for fic purposes) a few investment visa categories. Looking at the list, and knowing hockey at their level pays well, Shane and Ilya could use the Significant Investor visa stream at a 5 million AUD buy in and hold it for the required time before applying for permanent residency to citizenship if they desired.

to @apageinthisbook's tags about renouncing citizenship -- it's $100 CAD and an application. processing time currently stated to take 7 months but it's the IRCC so it's really just a shot in the dark.
