The Object of My Affection (1998)
I was so mad Sam wasn't at the awards, but seeing as how the producer and writer he worked with for years failed to even mention Sam's name while accepting the award for best drama show made me madder but also so glad Sam didn't go. That's messed up and they don't deserve him.
I mean, yeah. As unfortunate as it is, yeah.
I'll say this. Sam is the reason for The Newsreader's success, and that's not my bias talking. He is the reason an ordinarily okay show became what The Newsreader became, and that's especially true with the last season when the writing took an abysmal dive. Sam carried the entirety of S3 when he had little substance to work with and his relationship with Helen, the heartbeat of the show, was tossed aside for a contrived plot, yet he still managed to give a jaw-dropping performance, and I dare anyone to watch his first-take, partially improvised breakdown scene (which was done at his insistence in the first place because he knows Dale better than the writers) and tell me anyone on that stage last night could hold a candle to what Sam was doing.
It's a shame, but I have to say I'm glad it's over. He's really always been too good for it and those people (except Emma Freeman), and now he can focus on his actual career breakthrough and dream role and if some of the rumors I'm hearing are true, we're in for a delightful ride. 😌💜
