Even though it so thoroughly broke my heart, may I just say that I am so glad we got a finale for The Clone Wars. Not only have I been reminded of happy childhood afternoons watching new episodes with my entire family, but I have felt all the excitement of those afternoons at a time when excitement is, frankly, rather scarce. I got to see Anakin ignite his blue blade and show off for the 501st again. I got to see Obi Wan remember Satine and fight alongside Anakin. I got to see Ahsoka roll her eyes at her master - one last time - and stand up for what she knew was right all over again. I got the Bad Batch, the Martez sisters, and the Siege of Mandalore. Perhaps most of all, I got to witness Ahsoka - in an act of true compassion - save Rex from a future of mindless killing and slavery to the Empire.
So the next time someone asks you why they should watch The Clone Wars, or why it even matters, tell them this:
Even though Palpatine seemingly had his grasp on everything and everyone good in the Galaxy, a seventeen-year-old girl and a clone trooper escaped it. The Clone Wars personifies the theme of the first Star Wars: there is always hope.
And when a beaten, broken Anakin Skywalker stoops down to pick up his padawan’s lightsaber - the very one he kept and remodeled - he ignites it. He holds it gently. He holds it like he would have once held his wife, or Ahsoka herself. He holds it because, as Luke will later discover, there is still good in him.
He holds it and doesn’t let go. He tells himself to - he is a Sith Lord now, isn’t he? He is the famous and feared Darth Vader. Anakin Skywalker is gone. Dead. Consumed. There is no hope for him, even if he wanted there to be. But he doesn’t let go of Ahsoka’s saber, because he is wrong. He is still Anakin Skywalker, and he is still human. And scattered across the galaxy, there are a handful of people who know that to be true.
That’s why The Clone Wars matters and that’s why my heart is simultaneously shattered and strong in this essay I will-
