If only if only the woodpecker sighs the bark on the tree was as soft as the sky why the wolf waits below hungry and lonely he cries to the moon if only if only
A/N: I got a request for a Cedric Diggory oneshot, where he finds the reader singing. I let my imagination run a bit wild with this one. I’ve always been a sucker for Cedric. I imagined this would take place somewhere in Goblet of Fire. Thank you so much for reading. I hope you enjoy!
The wind flew off the glistening depths of the Black Lake and left biting kisses along your nose and cheeks. Your (H/C) hair escaped the safe confines of the loose bun you had fashioned that morning and whipped around your face. It was quickly becoming a nuisance. You gave up all pretenses of working on the Herbology essay due the following Monday in favor of embracing the peaceful, though wild, moment of tranquility and solitude.
You were sure your friends were all enjoying the crisp, fall afternoon without you. They had left, bundled in their wool sweaters and scarves, for Hogsmeade earlier this morning. You weren’t in the mood for merry-making or socializing. You hadn’t been since that horrible potions class last week, when you had managed to embarrass yourself in front of every (Y/H) and Hufflepuff in 6th Year. If you disliked Snape before, it was a burning hatred now, for he had forced you to share the aroma of your Amortentia potion with the class.
Broom polish. Old parchment. Vanilla.
Those all sounded innocent enough, right? Wrong.
You buried your head in your hands, your frozen fingers digging at the soft strands of hair that fell over your face.
Think of literally anything else, you thought.
And, unbidden, your mother’s favorite song popped into your head. She’d sing it to you when you woke with nightmares as a small child. There was something so intrinsically melancholy, yet heartening about it. It was comforting in a way only your mother could be.
“Oh sleep, sweet babe, though the snow is cold and deep around, oh sleep, dear babe, through the wind’s so keen and icy sound.”
You let the words flow from you and imagined your mother’s arms around you. She’d know what to do. She’d know how to make you forget your embarrassment. How to ease the awkwardness between you and one of your closest friends that stemmed from your, apparent, romantic feelings for him. But, your mother was dead and this song was nearly all you had left of her.
“Oh hush, sweet babe, there is nothing you should fear, just hush, dear babe, for my love is always here.”
You startled when a warm hand cupped the back of your head.
“I miss your mum, too, Y/N.”
You squeezed your eyes shut, hating that the very person you most wished to avoid was also the only one who knew you. Who knew where to find you. Who knew about your most intimate demons. Who knew exactly how to make you feel less alone. His warm body slid down the tree to envelope you.
“I’m not letting you run away from me this time, Y/N. We haven’t had a proper conversation since potions class last week. You’ve been avoiding me.”
“I’m not avoiding you, Ced. Just the situation. It’s horribly awkward,” you answered, swallowing the tears that threatened to overtake you.
He laughed a little, ducking his head so his gray eyes could meet your (E/C).
“But, that’s the same exact thing!”
You couldn’t stop your elbow jerking into his ribs. He wasn’t allowed to laugh at you. Not about this.
You glared at him, “I’m so very glad you find this all so amusing, Cedric. Truly. But, I’m terribly embarrassed. And think about how Cho must feel!”
Cedric scoffed, a bright grin overtaking his face. The tip of his nose was red with cold. His luminous gray eyes were nearly the exact shade of the autumn sky.
“I know exactly how Cho feels. Roger Davies’ Amortentia potion smelled like her, apparently.”
Your eyes grew wide, “Oh, Ced. I’m so sorry.”
You couldn’t stop your fingers from settling on his chest, smoothing the wrinkles in his black and yellow scarf.
“Don’t be,” he grinned, “I’m certainly not.”
Your brows crinkled and he used the cold pad of his thumb to smooth them back.
“You left potions before I had a chance to tell you what my potion smelled like. And you’ve been avoiding me, rather effectively as well, so I haven’t been able to tell you until now.”
You turned away. His potion couldn’t have smelled like Cho, not if he was this calm about her and Roger. You couldn’t look at him, not when your feelings would be so transparent. You couldn’t let him see the small, flickering flame of hope that burned within you. You couldn’t let him see it sputter out if the girl he loved wasn’t you.
Blast Snape and blast potions.
You’d kept your feelings from Cedric for three years and now you were forced to have this reckoning. Your life wouldn’t be worth much without Cedric in it, romantically or otherwise. You could survive a lifetime without him as your partner, so long as he remained your friend. Having part of him, no matter how small, was better than no part of him at all.
His hands, now nearly as cold as yours, gently cupped your cheeks. He pulled your face towards him, so he could look directly down, into your eyes. You couldn’t escape his magnetic gaze. You couldn’t look away from the stormy orbs that were so dark, and yet so bright, all at once.
“Roses,” He whispered, pressing a chaste kiss to your forehead.
“Something earthy,” he continued, his lips dropping further to touch the tip of your nose.
He paused for a moment and let his forehead rest against yours.
“Vanilla.”
He didn’t give you a chance to respond. His lips crashed down on yours. Your body lit with the force of his searing kiss. Everything felt pleasantly warm, like the small fire that always burned in the grate of the (Y/H) Common Room.
He pulled away first, laughing at the gobsmacked look on your face.
Your lips curved up into a smile, “I bloody love Potions.”
A/N: Hello! I got a request for a Legolas x Reader, where the reader is scared at night and asks Legolas to stay. This is my first oneshot -- EVER. So, please leave comments/messages with feedback to let me know how I did. Thank you so much for reading. I truly hope you enjoy!
You sat in a crumpled heap at the base of a mallorn tree. Its canopy shrouded the stars and kept you in darkness. The ground was hard beneath you, but the air was perfumed with the sweet scent of the mallorn leaves clinging to the branches above. Your throat ached. Dried tear tracks cut down your cheeks. You had held them in until the Fellowship was safe within the trees of Lothlorien. But, here, by yourself, you could contain them no longer. Mithrandir had been more than a companion to you. He had been more than a friend, too. He was family, or as close to family as you had ever had before the Fellowship and its journey to destroy the ring.
And now he was gone. Clinging tightly to the ledge in one moment, begging you to run, and gone in the next. You weren’t a fool. Mithrandir may have been the first loss, but the Fellowship would be torn to pieces long before you ever reached Mount Doom. You were scared. There was no denying it.
You did not fear death. You did not fear the darkness that would consume you or any pain that might plague you in those final moments. No, you feared something far greater: Watching as each of your friends, your family, died. You feared being left behind in a world without them. A world without him, if you were being completely honest.
You loved him. You were born to love him. To appreciate his gentle nature, his steady stoicism, and his unparalleled patience. You grew to love him more with every passing day. You admired the way he led through action. You adored his soothing presence and the way he could calm you with a single glance of his piercing eyes.
You were afraid that you depended on him for survival as you depended on food, water, shelter and clothes. To lose him would be to lose a part of you. How could anyone survive that?
A soft whisper drew you from your thoughts.
“Y/N?” The whisper came again, “You’re crying.”
You didn’t have to turn your face to know who it was. The voice was too gentle, too sweet to be anyone else.
“I--I’m afraid, Legolas,” Your voice was nearly unrecognizable, hoarse with your tears.
He was at your side in a moment, feet so light and quick and that not even the leaves rustled with his movement. His warm hand cupped the side of your face and tilted your chin up so he could meet your eyes.
“Av-’osto.” [Do not be afraid]
He brought you into his chest. His free arm curled around your back to hold you closer. You sunk into his embrace and nestled your nose into his neck.
“I cannot help it,” you murmured, “If Mithrandir can fall, what hope do the rest of us have? I cannot watch you all die.”
You could feel his small smile when he pressed his lips to your hairline.
“You will not have to, Y/N,” he said.
You snorted, unable to withhold your skepticism, “You cannot promise me that.”
He lifted you up and settled himself back against the tree. You resituated yourself in his lap so your legs were tucked up against your chest and your side was pressed to his abdomen.
“You’re right, Y/N. I cannot promise that we will all live to see peace,” he answered, “But I can promise you this: You will never be alone, because I will never leave you.”
“Legolas, I --”
He grinned a little, one hand coming up to cover your mouth so he could finish speaking.
“I won’t leave you. Not until this quest is done, Sauron has been defeated, and you are begging me to leave you alone. I will be by your side, every moment of every day from this one until your last, if that is what you wish.”
You shut your eyes tight in an attempt to hold back the tears that gathered there. You couldn’t say anything. What was there to say? He knew how you felt about him. You had never let those three words slip past your lips, but your actions said them louder than your voice ever could. He was always the first person you looked for after a fight. His eyes were the first you sought each morning when you woke. You made sure he was fed before you fed yourself. You dressed his wounds before you dressed your own.
He had to know.
He squeezed you just a little bit tighter.
You whispered, “Gwestol?” [Do you promise?]
“On the Valar themselves.”
You smile, despite the fear and the sadness that still weigh on you, “Will you stay here with me? Just a little bit longer?”
“I’ll always stay with you. For as long as you need me.”
