Each November, some people try to write a novel. Others would prefer to do as little writing as possible. For those who wish to challenge their ability to not write, we offer this alternative: producing a complete, playable roleplaying game in two hundred words or fewer.
This is the submission thread for the 2024 event, running from November 1st, 2024 through November 30th, 2024. Submission guidelines can be found in this blog's pinned post, here.
To Our Dear Host: Please feel free to post off-site for posterity.
Recommended: 3+ players; age 6+
Materials: 5-minute timer and writing implements
Optional: History or religious texts for references
Play as golems who have awakened after centuries of sleep. The word inscribed on your forehead has been smudged or altered; you remember your purpose but not if it's your CURRENT purpose. You're drawn to something specific though, so use that and help from other golems to figure it out.
The youngest starts as Golem 1 (G1) and names their purpose. The next player (G2) names a material G1 is drawn to and suggests what G1's new purpose is. The next player to G2 (G3) names the item the material is from and makes their own suggestion.
Start the timer.
Players debate G1's new purpose based on what G1 was drawn to. Arguments based on Jewish texts and stories hold the most weight. G1 can counter arguments or take notes during the debate. After the timer stops, the debate is over.
G2 states their own purpose, G3 the material, and so forth. Continue until all players have a turn.
End with G1 stating their new purpose and what argument(s) decided it, then G2, and on until all players have stated their new purpose.
Important Notes
Jewish `≠ Zionist. Antisemitism ≠ Anti-Zionist. They are not one in the same. In fact, there are a ton of people who identify as both Jewish and Anti-Zionist.
No matter your belief, background, or culture, we hope you have fun with this game. All we ask is that you play with respect.
Your New Purpose be a great excuse to check out some Jewish stories and history. It's an interesting religion and rich culture with so much history.
Smaller Note
I'm planning on releasing this game on my itch.io page, complete with some simple roll tables for ideas, better formatting, and the examples below. I'll share a link on my tumblr page when it's released, so keep your eyes open!

Examples of Game Play
Example 1
G1: I'm a Builder! Or was, I'm not sure yet.
G2: You find yourself drawn to a piece of metal. Metal is used a lot in building these days, so you could still be a Builder.
G3: The metal belongs to a blade. I think you were a Warrior with a sword.
(timer starts)
G1: Blades don't use need to be used for fighting. They could be used in tools like an ax that chops lumber for building.
G3: I still think your purpose is a Warrior, and there's nothing wrong with that. What if it's from a sword that belonged to a Maccabee? Your purpose could be as a brave warrior, defending your people against huge odds and coming out on top!
G2: On that note, it could also mean you used to be a Warrior, but now your purpose is a Builder. Maybe your original purpose was to wield a sword, but once there was peace, you turned to building things.
G1: Or even growing things. The blade could be from a plough, like for a Farmer.
(and so on....)
Example 2
G3: My purpose was as a Mediator.
G4: You're drawn to a piece of wood. Maybe you're a Builder?
G1: The wood belongs to an olive tree. I think you were a Farmer.
(timer starts)
G4: Okay, not a Builder. But the olive tree could symbolize peace. Maybe you were a Mediator, seeking out truth and helping others find common ground.
G1: I still think you were a Farmer. Olive oil was huge in a lot of food in Jewish culture. In fact, it's one of the Seven Species along with wheat and grapes and stuff. Farmers grow food, including the Seven Species, so it makes sense.
G2: Oh! The Seven Species! You're right, olives correspond with Yesod, or Foundation. It doesn't just have to be in cooking, right? Maybe you're meant to build the foundation of a new city. That would make you a Leader. Wait, can golems be leaders...?
G3: I don't think so? I don't remember anything in the stories bringing up Golems as leaders. That could be a bit strange.
G4: Then I think it would circle back to Builder. Building the foundations of a new city, right?
G1: That's really leaning into symbolism. I think it's more straight-forward than that, with you as a Farmer.
This is an informal game jam; entries are not curated or judged, no eligibility rules are enforced, no winners are chosen, and the organising parties explicitly refuse to define the terms "word" or "RPG". If you wish to participate, you can follow these steps:
Step 1: If you're unfamiliar with 200-word RPGs, read a bunch of previous years' entries (linked above), or browse the 200 Word RPG Challenge archives at https://200wordrpg.github.io/ to get in the proper headspace. (Note: this blog is not affiliated with the 200 Word RPG Challenge; its archives are provided for reference only.)
Step 2: Write your own 200-word RPG. If you're not sure of your word count, you can use the counter at https://200wordrpg.github.io/wordcount to check. If you disagree with how this tool defines "word", feel free to use a different counting method – adherence to the word limit is on the honour system anyway.
Step 3: Reblog the current event's main post (linked above when an event is active) and append your 200-word RPG in the reblog. Please do not submit your entry as a reblog to this post.
Step 4 (optional): If you wish to provide any author's notes on your entry, please place them under a "Read More" break to make it clear which part of the post is the game and which part is commentary.
Step 5 (optional): Please indicate in your post whether you're okay with having your 200-word RPG archived off-site for posterity – if you don't say anything one way or the other, we'll assume the answer is "no". Please state this separately from any more general discussion of sharing or remixing permissions; don't make us guess!
I took part in last year when the host was still running it on their main account and it was a lot of fun! Definitely hoping I can participate this year <3 Will I see you there?

Things have been crazy this year, especially in the past month. I'm hoping to get back on track by next month though since we'll be in a bigger house. I'll have less time in the day, but a lot less clutter, too. Fingers crossed!
Folk in Eldriton have been complaining about the muddy streets for over a generation, ever since their humble settlement grew from Eldrit village into a proper town. Traffic and merchant wagons churn the streets to mud even days after the rain, and the party notably have to slog through it to reach the inn on their first night.
Imagine everyone's surprise when folk awaken to discover a fresh swath of new cobbles along the town's main thoroughfare, appearing as if my magic in the dead of night. Some are wary but others are perplexedly elated, and the general mood is only further confused when it's discovered that the mayor's manor has been stripped down to it's wooden skeleton while he slept inside it.
Adventure Hooks:
Garbed in only his night shirt and clinging to a third story support beam, the mayor hollers at onlookers, alternating between demands for rescue and threats thrown at those carrying off his furniture and possessions, which have been neatly laid in the street for all to see. The frame of the disassembled manor creeks ominously, threatening collapse, and intercession by the party will likely earn them a significant reward if they don't bring the whole structure down on themselves. Or they could nick some valuables before the guards arrive and make a run for it.
The culprits in this perplexing case turn out to be warren 568, a collective of kobolds who've been moving into the region over the past couple months after their underdark tunnels brought them close enough to the surface to hit sunlight. They've proven themselves to be fine enough neighbours buying up provisions and trading tin with the local craftsmen, but there's an inevitable clash of cultures going on here. The kobolds don't get town people, why their leaders are allowed not to pull their weight and why an inefficiency like the muddy roads was allowed to persist. Then a couple of weeks back a few of their proquirers got to chatting with some market people and they overheard the rumour that the mayor never got around to seeing the roads paved because he was too busy building out his impressive home. "Ah" say the kobolds to themselves, already working out the logistics "we're good neighbours, let us fix that for you."
Days later, an old warehouses collapse in the night and tiny tools are found amid the rubble. The rumormill turns and folk start to whisper that the kobolds are intent on taring down all their houses in their mad act of "generosity". As it turns out, this is a ploy by a few of the local materials merchants to oust the kobolds for undercutting them. They hope to turn the unrest over the manor into active distrust.
Obviously aggrieved, the mayor wants the kobolds gone, and is willing to offer the party a tidy reward to infiltrate their mine and collapse some of the tunnels, bodycount be damned. If they keep to their principles and abstain from this bloodmoney they'll eventually be called in by the local reeve, apparently the mayor found bigger idiots with less scruples and she wants the party to find them before they instigate a massacre.
If the worse comes to pass and the mine collapses, the party may find themselves trapped in the underadark with some very distraught kobolds and no obvious way back to the surface.
Finally, if you're running with a new group of players or starting a fresh campaign consider using Eldriton as your "first town", a stopoff after the tutorial dungeon where the heroes were perhaps sent on a mission from the reeve so they can know her ahead of time. This adventure is pretty low stakes but offers a lot of opportunities for the group to decide who they are, be it opportunistic thieves, armature detectives, callous sellswords, or agents of order.
