i do think the whole “katara would’ve never actually forgiven zuko, didn’t even like him” is an insane misreading of her character. if zuko let katara heal iroh after azula shot his ass, their arcs would’ve been a lot shorter. keep in mind she was already READY to heal the man who was her enemy like five seconds ago, not once (iroh) but TWICE (zuko in catacombs).

but yeah sure katara always hated zuko or whatever.

And like, y'all, what she's forgiving him for in TSR ISN'T him chasing them around the world, or even the crimes of his family and nation. She forgave him for that in the catacombs, that's why she was so ready to give him the spirit water.

What she's forgiving him for in TSR is taking their connection over their moms and throwing it in her face, that's why she throws the "bring my mother back" demand at him.

Avatar: The Last Airbender S02E05 "Ten Thousand Things"

Zuko told Katara about how he got his scar in the crystal catacombs. It is so heavily implied I would basically say it is canon. She is the only person in the gaang he felt safe enough to tell, or anyone at all, really, even though they weren’t even friends yet.

This complements how Katara only opens up to Zuko out of the whole gaang about the vivid details of her mother’s murder.

In this essay, I—

Okay time for the essay.

So we start here basically.

Katara is yelling at Zuko after he's thrown into the "cell" with her. She starts going on about Ozai, which prompts Zuko to respond, given what Ozai has done to him — because at this point, Katara has no idea about Zuko or why he's hunting Aang or what got him out here. That's how the scene sets.

It's then that she is understandably enraged at this response, and brings up her mother. Then, Zuko tells her that he, too, lost his mother at the hands of the Fire Nation — at the hands of Ozai.

So when we head back to this scene, it's heavily implied they continued talking. Zuko simply saying "I'm sorry, that's something we have in common" would unlikely take Katara from her upset anger back down to calm empathy.

Given that, we can deduce they kept talking about what happened with the Fire Nation, their mothers, and based on the next part of the conversation — his scar and Ozai.

the way natla zutara had Zuko fixing things up unprompted, doing the dishes, and being just generally helpful around the house with commoners canon, and that's been part of Zutara fanon for YEARS
