Subjects 8, plural yes because I’ve discovered they’re brothers. What better a specimen to study on. They’ll have closer dna and it’s more likely I’ll find a cure. But-- nothing has worked so far; yet. I’m stumped and I think their rotting corpses are infecting my brain...
Shit--
She curses in a murmur, a gentle fingertip tracing beneath a lower lid. The skin sinks in and she looks like death with tracks of bloodshot lines tracing the inner corner of her eye. Just one.
Her stomach churns and she entirely ignores it as she steadies a shaky hand like a professional. She speaks into her recorder. “Subject 8a has become more docile. His brother, subject 8b still processes the desire to eat. I have to attribute the firsts responses due to food restriction. Behavioral traits are only adapted based on environment.” she slams the recorder down gaining the attention of her two chained up subjects. The clang against metal causing a pronounced ringing in her ear that leaves her pinching her eyes shut as a hand covers up one ear.
She groans in slight agony and removes the stained lab coat as she grabs some gear to head out. Entirely frustrated on her progress. Besides-- she has spent days in the dark within the sewers and the light would be good for her. She doesn’t know it’s been days, she doesn’t know she’s spent countless hours working with these two subjects. She doesn’t know the sun will burn her eyes until she gets out into it....
“Aahhh...” she shields her face as it takes a little over a few minutes for her to adjust to the daylight. In turn this causes an ache that she feels in her frontal lobe, she doesn’t only look like death, but feels like it. And it wouldn’t surprise her if she smelled like it too.
She crawls out of the manhole and onto pavement as she’s now in the city, laying in the middle of the street somewhere. She knows where, but she can’t think where-- as she slowly climbs to her feet. Scuffing her worn boots on pavement she saunters on the sidewalk after she reaches it. But she spins quickly, which makes her dizzy, hearing someone behind her. Her crossbow is drawn up and aimed right at the face of--
and she collapses.

Baby steps | Lu + Ksoo
The sound of the trap snapping shut made him flinch, his eyes immediately darting around to make sure no walker within hearing range is charging over from behind the trees. It’s a reaction everyone had grown accustomed to for as long as he could remember, no one daring to let their guard down when outside their camps because though it’s become relatively easy to survive when in a camp the free zone is still by far the most dangerous area. He mentally sighed in relief when the area stayed silent before he looks back at Lucy and nods his head.
“Of course, go right ahead,” Kyungsoo replied as he took a step back to give the other some room to work with, intending to watch the other’s progress and prepared himself in case the trap accidentally sets off on her hand or finger – which he hoped wouldn’t happen. He’d rather not add another name on his relatively short list of people I-accidentally-hurt-by-my-hunting-traps list. The trap’s teeth might not look much with it being slightly rusty but it will still hurt. Yes, he speaks from experience—sort of.
Kyungsoo watched Lucy work like a hawk, his hand twitching up to help a few times but decided against it. He couldn’t believe how nervous he was at the moment, especially when she’s already trying to lock the jaws in place with her thumb dangerously close to setting the trap off again. “D-don’t forget to hold it underneath…” he reminds softly, his hand hovering close just in case. One can never be too careful after all.
She didn’t mean to startle him with the snapping of the trap but being keen in her senses to pick up the dead when they were inching near had been an ability she greatly perfected since she lived around them for years now. Though they did always manage to surprise you every now and then-- no matter how good your senses were.
But she worked. Following detail by detail as she was shown by the young male on how to set up this trap. However, she made tiny errors that she traced around and attempted again. Having him hover over her as a ‘precautionary’ in order to supervise her technique anyway, she didn’t mind. In fact she preferred it, so just in case she was about to lose a hand-- he could help.
When he chimed in with his tip of advice she paused and fixed the position of her hands “...oh, yes-- thank you.” holding the trap correctly she finished setting it up and quite proudly too. Being it her first trap and all. At least for hunting for food. And she was hungry. “Like this... right?” she wanted to be one hundred percent sure which was why she asked for his clearance.

notes:
Subject 7-- is not unknown to me. Late 60′s, she’s was a grandmother. I actually met this woman several years ago. Not a friend of the family... but a friend, and about the age of my mother before she turned, though I can’t help but worry if my mother also had this fate... or if... or if she’s still alright...
For a lunch date in the inner area of a camp where Hyojung lived, Lu could not say she was wholly welcomed, nor unwelcome. But like the entire major area of Seoul, each of the camps surfaced above the sewers.
There were loopholes and ways inside and around many of the major areas outside as well as inside the camps. The walkers were not nearly clever enough-- obviously... by the lack of proper function of their brains. But the average person, if they knew how to navigate below the cities, they could get anywhere they wanted and infiltrate from underground. Though there was getting through the sewers without being detected by the walkers that certainly were loose beneath the cities. Surely enough, Lu knew her way around as she lived underneath for years now.
Hell-- she set up many of the traps where walkers gathered just in case some not so pleasant humans decided to raid her camp, could they manage to find her. Taking the usual pathways and without the help of a map, navigating herself to Kangwon camp.
Climbing up the ladder she pried open the heavy cover of the sewer to the above world. Well, she could at least say she picked one rather secluded from any populace. Taking to the back ways and following a map now that she was above ground, she found the abandoned car shop. Searching the perimeter of the shop she gently tapped a small knock to a door and whispered to be let in.
“Hyojung, it’s Lucy.”
Mad Dog - Lucy x Gary
Inky darkness surrounded Gary once he stepped inside of the deserted building across the streets. In better conditions, he’d rather avoid this kind of places, places that were filled with the horrible smell of dereliction and decay. There was undoubtedly something rotting somewhere in the building. But Gary didn’t feel like looking for whatever corpse that was getting eaten by dirty maggots and rats. He didn’t want to see the future that was likely waiting for him.
He continued stumbling through the darkness, sometimes tripping over the debris that was scattered all around the place. At the other side of the dark corridor, he could see some faint light coming from another room. If he was to die, he didn’t want to die in this miserable darkness, he wanted to see the sunlight, even if it was only one simple ray. Groaning in pain and cursing under his breath, he dragged his feet towards the only source of light in the house.
“Hey– are you bit?”
A female voice suddenly broke the eerie silence in the house, surprising Gary so much that he lost his balance and fell on the ground. In a reflex, he reached for his gun, but his vision was so blurred and hazy at the moment he couldn’t aim his gun properly. It was even hard for the wounded man to make out the woman’s shadow against the dark wall.
“Leg,” he said, his breathing ragged and uneven. “A dog… Don’t know if it was infected, don’t know…” he stopped in the middle of his sentence to take a deep breath, closing his eyes for a second, “if I am.”
Through blurred vision, Gary stared at the woman as she left the security of the shadows against the walls to take a step closer.
“I’d rather leave if I were you,” he said between gritted teeth. “Never know when I’m going to turn. Wouldn’t take the risk to stay if I were you.”
Whenever she heard a voice instead of the gurgle of fluids rotting in an infested mouth, it always brought her relief. Though walkers could be easier to deal with, she could also deal with a cooperative human being. And he seemed that way by the tone of his voice.
However-- she did flinch when he stumbled. And certainly made sure to steer clear of his weapon he drew. A normal reaction though, she would not blame him. Everyone was on their toes now-a-days with the virus creating even the healthier folk to go insane.
As he mentions his limb her eyes drop downward. “We’re all infected.” she blurted out flatly as she approached him. He probably could not focus which was the reason she dropped her guard. He was not going to shoot her, he probably couldn’t.
“What matters is... if the dog was turned.” and in which case she presumed the animal wasn’t. She had yet to see a living turned animal. And there was something about that, that she wanted to study. “And I highly doubt it was.”
She dropped down once she was close enough to him in order to inspect his leg. It did not look infected but it surely could get that way. Slipping her pack off her shoulder she unzipped a smaller front pocket so she could grab a few first aid items. She always lugged something around for situations that may need medical treatment. One never knew what kind of trouble they might get in.
“Just be quiet, you’re not going to turn.” she shoved a small clean rag into his hand and glared at him with a stern expression. “This is going to burn, not sting. So if you can’t suck it up, put that in your mouth... we don’t need you attracting any walkers.” she twist off the cap to a small highly concentrated alcohol bottle to pour on the open wound left from the dog bite. She had to get his wound dressed before an infection caused a common fever to kill him.

“Hunting isn’t very hard once you get used to it,” Kyungsoo said before giving Lucy a smile except he forgot about the mask so he wiped the smile off his face just as quick. He only ever learned about hunting stuff from old movies he saw before and eventually figured how it all works after some time. It could be learned and with how intelligent Lucy looked, it wouldn’t be much of a problem for her.
“Sure thing. It’s relatively easy when you have a ready-made trap like this one,” he said as he gave the trap a pat, using a branch to trigger it close again, it’s teeth snapping the branch in half before he lifted it up. Kyungsoo liked his foothold traps best. It’s easier to set and it doesn’t tear at his catch’s skins as much. Kyungsoo stood up after placing the trap on the ground in front of him.
“You just stand on the levers like this before you pull the jaws apart…” he starts as he stepped onto the lever and pulled the said jaws apart. “You lock them in place with this… I’ve no idea what you call this part, sorry, but you pull it all the way to the top. Keep your fingers under though so you wouldn’t get pinched if it accidentally fires.” He said and carefully did everything before setting it back on the ground. “And… you’re all set.”
Kyungsoo stood up and looked back at Lucy. “I uhm… lack in knowledge with making makeshift traps though I’m sorry, more so with guns,” he admits with a chuckle, knowing full well he won’t be able to shoot anything unless it’s right in front of him.
Whilst she heard his words, she could not really agree or disagree. Her neutral stance was open minded, though she had not the first clue to hunting. If he could do it and say with word of advice that it was not difficult-- then what else was there to believe? She would take his word for it and give it a try, so long as his instructions were easy to follow, she would get it. And fairly quickly too.
She inspects his trap as he verbally points it out. Taking notice to all the areas he describes and points out to in order for her to understand how something like this might work. Setting it up would take a little strength, since the coils for it to snap closed seemed pretty tight. But it was something she could manage doing.
Once he is done explaining and with demonstration-- she happens to glance back up to him. Nodding with affirmation she places her hands, fists curled, to rest on her hips. She’s ready to try it on her own this time but she wants him to shadow what she does in order for her to be sure she has done it correctly. “Alright--” she picks up another stick and jabs it into the trap to set it off one more time.
“Mind watching me as I try to practice? I want to see if I remember correctly.” lashes flutter with a blink, she waits for him to let her know she can start. It’s quiet enough at the moment, thankfully, for them to get this practice in before any walkers creep up on them.
“I could always just kill them…”
ahh–
The sound exits the parched throat of the scientist. “You could… you could– or…”
She takes a breath– hums quickly whilst she opens her canteen and sips some water to help quench her thirst. Her hand holds out, palm facing the young female as if to stop her from doing anything rash. “–or… you can not.” she emphasizes.
Just because they were unsightly to look at and dangerous to come into contact with– didn’t mean… go on a killing spree.
Not for Lu.
She had better things to do with such vile walking carcasses. “I want to study this one–” she pointed, claiming her walker. Aside from its frothing bacterial orifice, glazed eyes and severely pruned flesh, it was considered one of the most healthiest looking ones she has come by.
“You can kill the other ones.”
“I had to do it.”
“Okay– had to do it…”
She nodded as her voice faintly trailed off. She went back to stuffing her pack with some supplies for a hike to the other side of the city. Letting the silence sit between them for a moment.
“It gets tiring– doesn’t it?”
Picking her head up she glanced toward the young male. Curious eyes set on him. “Had to… but you don’t want to… you don’t– like to.” she breathed and let the words comfortably exit her lips. He already knew what he had to do in order to survive. But– this isn’t how anyone wanted to live. One eye open, back against a wall and to abolish any or all humane morals the world once portrayed.
Lucy was not dreaming… she was remembering. And it never hurt to remember what the past was like seven years ago. Before the outbreak, before… chaos. “Everyone is tough– so brave… tsh–” she shakes her head as her pack is zipped up and she grunts whilst heaving it up and throwing it over her shoulder. “It’s okay… to not always wear a mask.”
The key word was had.
Had.
Meant there was a choice. And he chose one way.
An inhumane person would want– to do it.
Remorse still lingered in the depth of some people… cloaked by the facade of stoicism.
“Dont you dare hit me!“
She was quick to snap her gaze at him. Staring sternly especially after the brat he had been. Often times when someone was rude, Lu just shared a piece of her mind and that was it. She would not dare hit someone unless it was really called for.
“Then I’d watch what you say next time.” her tone was authoritative which she assumed would only agitate him further. “I could do a lot worse than hit you. That should be the least of your concern.”
She was not her typical self to threaten someone as such, but it was a very fair warning for the young male. But this is usually what happened when a camp runner and free zone enthusiast ran into one another. And simply why she could not be apart of a group.
There’s an immediacy to television which I really love. You do it and you film it and it actually airs. The dynamic of movies now has changed because of the landscape of television and how accessible it is… [Television] gives you the opportunity to have roles that are written for women that are in a wider spectrum than in film.
