WORDS TO USE INSTEAD OF: SCARED
Do you ever find yourself over-using the word âscaredâ to describe characters in your writing? Try using these words instead:
terrified
horrified
worried
spooked
afraid
paranoid
anxious
aghast
hesitant
panicked / panicky
concerned
nervous
startled
petrified
scarred
traumatized
frightened
fearful
shocked
shaken
i can NOT stop thinking about when c.s. lewis introduced a character by saying âhis name, unfortunately, was Eustace Scrubbâ like BRUH no need to do him dirty like that đđ you GAVE him that name. tf
You forgot he immediately followed it with âand he almost deserved it.â
story starters
(i got a lot of asks for these, so here ya go) (âŠi really tried to be serious for the entire post but)
I screwed up.
There are three things you need to know before you read this.
How do I tell a well-structured story when life is absolute chaos?
I know what you came here for.
He was an unfortunate lad.
It came in the mail.
A lot can happen during a lifetime.
This is the story of how I died. Donât worry, though! I came back.
Once upon a time⊠there was humanity.
It all started at the end.
You ever seen those commercials where people screw up the simplest of tasks in the most idiotic fashion ever? Yeah, thatâs basically what happened here.
âWhy are we here?â
Let me just be perfectly clear that this was not my fault.
This isnât a good story.
Youâre here, thatâs good. Now we can start.
âYou shouldâve stopped when you still could.â
It was a trap.
It was a normal day, as long as you ignore the fact that it wasnât.
They didnât warn you, my dear reader?
Somethingâs trying to kill me.
Iâm not a particularly good story teller, but Iâll try my best.
*record scratch* *freeze frame* Yep, thatâs me. No, not the vague figure youâre imagining now from the zero amount of information Iâve given you, and no, Iâm not the heroic yet relatable main-character youâd expect either. Iâm the one thatâs currently, and quite poetically, hiding in the corner of a chicken den. Yeah, thatâs the one.
Actual Writing Tip #945
Donât know what POV to write your latest chapter in?
Go through your options and ask yourself, âWhat would this character bring to the chapter if they narrated it?â
The answer can be anythingâa perspective the readers might disagree with and you want to show their thought processes, a funny one liner, someone you havenât had a chapter from in a while, a reaction you want to write, a confession you know is going to happen later.
Pick your favorite or the most meaningful, and there you go!
5 Questions You Need to be Able to Answer About your POV Character(s)
Why is this person a POV character? What does this POV add to the story? What makes their POV unique?
Why is this the only POV we can see X, Y, Z through?Â
Does their narrative voice impact how they interpret what theyâre seeing? How? What influencing factors give them this perspective and why is it relevant to pushing the plot forward?
Is this POV redundant or repetitive? Are pieces from this POV repeated in an almost identical manner elsewhere? Would it be simpler to indicate their thought process through social cues and dialogue rather than giving them their own POV?
Why are they the best choice to be the storyteller? Would another character be better suited to telling the story?Â
Note: Your POV character should not necessarily be the most interesting character in your story. eg. Nick Carroway from The Great Gatsby was a fucking bondsman, but because he was new to the society he was introduced to, the only one capable of seeing the âtrueâ Gatsby, and the only one who could remain reasonably level-headed throughout the novel - not getting sucked into the superficial lifestyle like the others - he was the only character who could tell the story in a way that was digestible for readers.

Turn Common Conventions on Their Head
Long Lost Siblings
This is a commonly used plot twist in all forms of media. The protagonist who thought they had no one else in the world discovers they have a long lost sibling who they must now go searching for. Hereâs some ideas Iâve had about how to give this a fresh new look:
1. It doesnât have to be that big of a deal. I mean, it would be poor writing for your character not to be shocked about having a sibling unless a proper explanation is given, but they donât have to actively seek them out. Perhaps they decide that their mission is too dangerous to get them involved, or maybe they donât feel worthy of knowing their sibling because of their sins (YuYu Hakusho anyone?). Or maybe they do meet and the sibling decides not to come with them, essentially youâre making the statement that blood doesnât have to thicker than water, that intentionally made bonds are stronger than those your expected to have.
2. They were the lucky oneâs. Usually, if one of the children were abandoned, they are the ones to experience the hardships of life, but what if it was the other way around? Imagine your character goes through your story angry at their family for abandoning them, only to discover that their parents were horrible abusers, and in an act to save them their older sibling hid them away so they didnât have to suffer.Â
3. The Prophecy. Picture this: Your character is part of a famous bloodline who passes magical powers to one child every time, and as such their family made a pact to only ever have one child to prevent competition, as if the child was killed the powers would move to the next worthy child. The protagonist was unfortunately a twin and the family decided that one of them had to die. The mother, who married into the family couldnât stand that fact and so ran away with the child, leaving the other to continue the legacy.Â
4. An Unhappy end. I tend to see that stories which use this trope tend to have medieval fantasy settings. Mortality rates during this time were pretty low so even though it is revealed that they have a sibling, it doesnât necessary mean that theyâre still alive. Combine this with the idea above and have one sibling hunting for their twin in order to kill them and obtain the magic powers and you have a story of the corruption of power and how it can even stain something so pure as a love for a sibling.
And there we go! Hope that helps you all. If you have your own trope you want me to look at please fell free to ask me.
