If you and Ryland do end up having a baby on Erid, it’s a BIG deal for the whole planet.
A new alien has been born! An Earth hatchling! Everyone is so curious what a baby human looks like, acts like, everything. And no one is more excited to meet this creature than Rocky and Adrian.
You and Ryland ask them to stay away for a couple of days while you adjust to newborn life. The birth was a private, mildly traumatic experience for all involved but you pushed through and now spent your days juggling a healthy, week old infant.
Rocky and Adrian kept true to their word and kept their distance for a week, shooing away the other Eridians that wanted to disturb your privacy too. But when the day came that you told them they could visit? They’re knocking at your door bright and early.
The two spend an unnaturally long time sitting in silence next to you where you lounge on your bed, observing the bundled up baby girl in your arms and listening to her new, tiny rhythm. Adrian is the one who speaks up first.
“It very still. Sleeping, question?”
Ryland answers them where he stands by your side, chest puffed in pride while his two alien friends ogle his offspring. “Yep! Human babies spend most of their day sleeping and when they’re not sleeping, they’re eating. It takes a couple of weeks for them perk up so she’ll be like this for a bit more then she’ll start to liven up and interact with her environment.”
“Humans sleep too much,” Rocky complained. “Want to see it active right now!”
You laugh and brush a finger over her nose. Her face scrunched a little. “Patience. It’ll be worth it.”
Rocky didn’t seem to agree but he didn’t say any more about it. Only a beat passed before he put a claw on the mattress.
“Rocky hold.”
It wasn’t a question.
Ryland looked a little hesitant. “I don’t know, Rock. You’ve only just met her, maybe you need to watch how we hold her for a little while before you do. Babies are delicate. And you might be a little too hot for her to handle-“
“Suit well insulated. It won’t feel. Rocky hold.”
The Eridian reached out and Ryland tried to wedge himself between the two. “Lets wait a couple more weeks-“
“He’s ok, Ry. As long as they’re careful, they can hold her.”
The man was not happy about it, but he carefully instructed Rocky to sit on the bed, very still, and hold his front two arms in a rough cradle shape. Once Ryland had draped a whole load of blankets and a pillow onto the Eridian’s arms (for padding so the baby wasn’t laying directly on the hard xenonite suit), you carefully set her down.
Rocky sat perfectly still, rhythmic clicks resonating from him as he studied the baby.
She didn’t move much at all- if anything, she unconsciously nuzzled a little closer to the warmth he radiated. Ryland sagged in relief. Adrian stood to come right next to the bed and put a gentle claw on her torso. They stayed quiet for a long time, listening to her gentle breathing before Rocky chirped quietly.
What’s the service he provides?? Bites the shit outta him when he’s ignoring a bad pain day. Notices him wincing or limping and just clamps down on his arm, pulling until he gets Colt to sit down. Then he’ll plop down on his lap to make extra sure he doesn’t move.

I just had a vision of an au where some of the Eridians left their planet when the petrova line showed up as a last ditch effort to save their species and find a new home. Rocky’s ship crash lands on earth when he’s young (maybe around like 30 years old?), and 12 year old Ryland and Colt are the ones who find him.
The idea is still a little half baked, but I think I’m gonna make some more comics of it just for fun lol.
I saw a comment on one of my sketches if Mark Watney's survival lectures/tips would be on the Hail Mary's ship laptops. I also felt like drawing a lil sketch about Ryland essentially just eating microwave burritos for days.
