VERY IMPORTANT a dam in the Netherlands, the weerdsluis lock, is directly on a migratory path for spawning fish. They have a worker stationed there to open the door for the fish, but they can take a while to open it. So to keep the fish from getting preyed on by birds they installed a doorbell. Only, the fish don't have hands to ring the doorbell. If you go to their website, they have a LIVE CAMERA AND A DOORBELL that YOU RING FOR THE FISH when they're waiting, and then the dam worker opens the door for them! I can't express how obsessed I am with this. look at this shit. oh my god.

Please check on the fish doorbell once in a while :)

Okay our first real reptile rant will be on the common chuckwalla (scientific name Sauromalus ater) Because these guys are fucking amazing.

So the first time I heard of these amazing animals was while reading through my North American reptile/amphibian field guide in an Olive Garden. My mother, who is not the biggest fan of reptiles was not quite enthused about these lizards so I decided instead to share my new favorite reptile fact with every friend I had at the time.

When threatened, the common chuckwalla’s main defense mechanism is to run to the nearest crevice or small hole it can find and then begin to swallow as much air as possible. Then it literally inflates until it is too big to be removed from whichever crevice it is hiding in. Nothing can move it because it is simply too big now.

THIS THING. LITERALLY INFLATES. IT IS A BALLOON. AND I FUCKING LOVE IT. YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW HILARIOUS THIS IS TO ME.

I just have the mental image of a lizard with its cheeks blown up like a chipmunk’s. Just staring like “whatcha gonna do now fuckhead???” at whatever poor unfortunate predator decided it was craving lizard today. I just. HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE THIS BEAUTIFUL CREATURE???? ITS FUCKING AMAZING. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME

On the hunt for eggs today? The banded jawfish (Opistognathus macrognathus) has a mouthful! Banded jawfish dads-to-be carry eggs in their mouth. This behavior—which helps protect offspring from predators—is known as mouthbrooding. To attract females, males do a “dance” that involves a series of sweeping movements and fin-flashing. They even open their mouths as wide as possible to boast their mouthbrooding potential!
