I'd just like to add for you all an important little guy who's often misidentified!

This is a wood wasp (also known as a giant horntail). You may look at her and think "wow that's a scary wasp with a huge stinger!" But you would be wrong!!

What looks like her stinger is actually her ovipositor, and she has no harmful effects on people, she doesn't bite or sting. In fact, despite her name, she isn't even a wasp! That there is a sawfly.

These guys are fascinating, and have a very long time period as larvae, with that long ovipositor being used to put babies far into pine wood, where they stay for a very long time (~5 years). When they mature, much to many people's shock, they can sometimes come out of your furniture, looking all huge and waspy and flying around your house.

Please be nice to these little guys this summer, as they emerge in may-august time, and can often spook people with their sudden appearance and threatening look. Just put them in a cup and take them outside, as they only have 3-5 or 10-12 days (makes live longer than females) to live, and killing them so soon after their whole five years gestation would be so cruel!
