The question of the sentience of Divine Beasts are in debate. Because one can argue they are like giant mechs...and since WE (Champions) control the Divine beasts and the four champions were considered "pilots" that can be a safe assumption.
But Ganon and the blights taking over would likely make them "sentient" to their malicious grasp.
So while "kill" may not be the best word, it js likely the easiest since those who aren't Champions or the royal family would be less privy to the Sheikah technology involved.

Thanks to NicoB, I now have a habit of saying "Thank you" or "Thank you, [Champion's name]" each time the Champions' abilities are fully charged.
Though in turn, this makes me think of my Link looking at a sleeping Tulin only to suddenly
"DARUK'S PROTECTION IS NOW READY TO ROLL!!"
I want to imagine part of the four champion's spirits still within their abilities. Which is why Link can hear them announce their abilities or respond when those abilities are used.
