I actually disagree with Nie Huaisang convincing Mo Xuanyu to summon Wei Wuxian.

Not because I think Nie Huaisang wouldn't have done it, but because I think Mo Xuanyu was already planning to kill himself and summon Wei Wuxian to deal with his problems. Everyone in town knew that he was bad in the head and the Mo family and all their servants knew that he had brought lots of esoteric things from his time at Koi Tower, that he put blood all over his walls and floor in strange rituals that never did anyting (remember no one batted an eyelash when they saw the sacrificial ritual that brought Wei Wuxian back) And the Mos are minor nobility, it'd have been a piece of cake for a sect leader to plant spies in between their servants.

Nie Huaisang is nothing if not extremely careful and I don't think contacting the notoriously insane Mo Xuanyu would be safe, from a "keeping things hush hush" perspective, so I doubt there was ever any contact between them.

I believe Nie Huaisang had him under observation and when it looked like he was going off the deep end and about to do the ritual, he released a few fierce corpses and ensured the Lan sect were the ones who received the call for aid.

And it was only after he confirmed that Wei Wuxian had reincarnated (which wouldn't have been hard, if one is looking for it) that he released Nie Mingjue's hand to poke at Wei Wuxian's curiosity and Lan Wangji's sense of righteousness. Remember that the hand is a new thing, it was mentioned that something as bloodthirsty as the hand would've killed the entire town if it had been around for a while.

And then the ball rolled out of his hands and he prayed things would work out.

an important note on wwx's characterization that i think is important and sometimes people will get wrong, is that wwx doesn't have low self-esteem ("i'm stupid, i'm ugly, i'm annoying, i'm bothersome, nobody likes me") nor does he have low confidence ("i can't do this" "i don't know this" "i can't do anything right"). in fact, both of these are extremeeeely high in his personality as a teen and young adult

what wei wuxian does have, however, is low self-worth, specifically when it comes to his own needs and well-being compared to other people. couple that with his high confidence and urge to pay off debts of gratitude, and you get his extremely self-destructive behavior ("it's fine if i lose my core as long as jc has it for the good of the sect, i can survive without one", "it's fine that i'm being forcefully kissed by a stranger because she's nervous and i don't want to embarrass her", "it's fine, it's all fine, as long as it's me, because i can take it")

Most warprizeji fics have either YLLZ going That One I Want That One and sweeping LWJ off his feet after LWJ thought he’d be treated like shit, or LWJ being offered up to a YLLZ who is suspicious of his new bride and suspects assassination attempts or something only for the two to mutually fall in love anyway, and I love both of those flavors! However, please consider: The sects all bully Lan into giving up LWJ as a war prize, LWJ is escorted (forced) to the Burial Mounds by representatives from Every Sect, and YLLZ takes one look at this new “gift” before absolutely fucking popping off because That Is A Person!! A Human Being!! What The Fuck Is Wrong With All Of You?!? Get Off My Mountain. And LWJ is left standing there, watching this actually very beautiful and powerful man absolutely rip the other sects a new asshole for basically trying to sell him a slave, thinking “… Maybe I DO want to tap that.” Only YLLZ has sent him away! He has forbidden the sects from ever trying anything like this again! Seriously, What Is Wrong With All Of You? (Yunmeng Jiang, the only ones who were not involved, are all quietly smug about the whole thing. We told you he wouldn’t go for it.) Not two weeks after returning to Gusu a caravan shows up outside cloud recesses, from the Yiling Wei Sect, carrying gifts for LWJ and his family and his sect as an apology for whatever the fuck that was, and a promise that if anybody tries to do anything like that again, they can reach out to Yiling Wei and YLLZ will come make damn sure nobody is going anywhere or doing anything they don’t actually want to be doing. … LWJ definitely wants to tap that. He ends up writing back a thank you letter to YLLZ, who responds in kind with reassurances that no thanks are necessary and seriously dude are you okay cause that was A Lot. LWJ writes another letter, promising he’s returned safely and happily to his home, and his brother and uncle have been very clingy and overprotective but things are settling down again. YLLZ writes him back. LWJ writes him back. Suddenly they’ve been pen pals for the better part of two years and LWJ has finally convinced WY to come visit him in Gusu so he can properly begin Operation: Seduce The Yiling Patriarch. The operation goes much smoother than expected, because it turns out YLLZ never actually saw his face last time. LWJ had been wearing a veil. So poor unsuspecting WWX rolls up to Gusu to come hang out with his buddy LWJ who he’s been sending letters to pretty consistently since the whole War Prize Fiasco only to come face to face with the most beautiful man to ever walk the earth. WY immediately decides to begin Operation: Seduce Hanguang-Jun. A week later they’re getting caught making out in the library like randy teenagers. Xichen does Not say I Told You To to Lan Qiren. Lan Qiren hears it anyway.

Cannot get over the amount of the impact Wei Wuxian had on the cultivation world as a scholar.

As for why they looked familiar… How could they have not come across as familiar? The creator of Phantom Attraction Flags was none other than the YiLing Patriarch!

It seemed like that, although the cultivation world hated him on the surface, they still used the the inventions that he came up with.

There’s obviously his inventions.

But also,

The cultivation world had a strict definition for the category of “ferocious ghosts”—they had to kill at least one person a month and continue the behaviour for at least three months. The criterion was set by Wei WuXian himself, and it was probably still being used. He was the best at dealing with this kind.

The fact that he created the criteria???

They use his ideas so much and so often, he had such a present and lasting impact on the world, and it makes the cultivation world’s hypocrisy even more glaring considering they curse his name to that day but he’s also their most trusted source for so many things.

I actually love the way Lan Wangji doesn't pursue Wei Wuxian when they meet again(?)

He's ready to play with him, to one up him in his own games and surprise Wei Wuxian that he's playing along at all. I think that's what picking him up was, and getting him into bed, and all that back and forth they had. Wangxian both like to tease. But Lan Wangji's side always feels like he's trying a little less to flirt and I see why some people would be disappointed with that, but I really like it.

It makes sense why he'd think Wei Wuxian wouldn't reciprocate his feelings and they had so many communication problems in his past life, it comes across to me as Lan Wangji just wanting to be there for him this time, as a friend or in whichever other way Wei Wuxian will take him. Romance is the ideal of course but not the requirement. It's a very selfless type of love, where he just wants Wei Wuxian safe and happy, and being there for him at all seems to come as a bonus that has Lan Wangji really really happy regardless or how much of that he gets.

Which also seems to comfort Wei Wuxian, that Lan Wangji has no ulterior motives keeping him by his side, he just likes him and wants to be there, that's all. As he slowly opens up to the idea of them being together, you get to see Lan Wangji respond, because he does want this if he can have it, but one of the most important parts of getting here is that he wasn't pushing for it. He was there giving himself and his love for Wei Wuxian without asking for anything back, and in turn Wei Wuxian fell (deeper) in love with him.

I've been wanting to write a meta about this for a while (I will eventually!) but I've been sort of low energy, so it'll have to be rambly posts instead for now...

…I need to see more content of Wei Wuxian solving problems by manipulating people’s emotions.

He isn’t a long term manipulator like Jin Guangyao and Nie Huaisang, but it’s actually one of his main strategies when it comes to solving problems! Stopping Mianmian being sacrificed in the Xuanwu cave? He angers Wen Chao into stepping out of Wen Zhuliu’s protection, allowing him to hold him at swordpoint and to take advantage of Wen Zhuliu’s loyalty, meaning that he (the greatest threat at the moment) won’t attack them. Helping Lan Wangji fight Xue Yang in the mists of Yi City where he can’t be seen? Taunt Xue Yang into talking by bringing up Xiao Xingchen, a subject he’s very sore on, so Lan Wangji can find him by ear. Suspect that Su She is behind the loss of everybody’s spiritual powers at the Second Siege? Mock him so he grows impatient and careless, as well as trick him into thinking he (Wei Wuxian) had two pages from the Collection of Turmoil to heighten that effect and stir up paranoia, so he carelessly uses spiritual power to deflect Lan Wangji’s attack – something he probably wouldn’t have done otherwise. 

That applies when he’s on the defensive too. When Wen Chao and co capture him in Yiling and he doesn’t even have a Golden Core, what does he do? Use his words to scare him into not killing him – very much manipulating him emotionally (though I do believe he meant/wanted to mean what he said then, too)!

I’ve talked a bit about how he’s very resourceful, but something else that’s overlooked is that he’s also extremely emotionally perceptive, and won’t hesitate to use that to his advantage in dangerous situations. He may not be someone who manipulates for some ambitious, long-term goal. But as a tactic or a strategy? He’s very good at it, and it’s a method his mind very much defaults to when solving problems.

WHAT THE SHOW WANTS ME TO THINK IS HAPPENING HERE: Jin Guangyao, criminal and political mastermind, is aware that Lan Wangji and this Mo Xuanyu impersonator are investigating Nie Mingjue’s murder. In light of the news from Yi City (which he would have heard from both Su Minshan and Jin Ling) and Lan Xichen’s uncharacteristic lack of communication, he is extremely concerned that a metaphorical noose is tightening around him.

WHAT I BELIEVE TO BE HAPPENING HERE: Jin Guangyao, event planner extraordinaire, cannot fucking beLIEVE that er-ge didn’t tell him that his brother and his brother’s suspicious boyfriend were coming to the Cultivation Conference. It is THE formal occasional of the year, its RSVP date passed weeks ago, everything was arranged PERFECTLY, and now he’s got to somehow come up with two extra place settings, redo the ENTIRE METICULOUSLY-DESIGNED SEATING CHART to accommodate them in a way that befits Hanguang-jun’s rank yet also downplays the presence of the guy he publicly expelled for harassing his wife (whom he needs to track down and warn ASAP because she’s going to be even less thrilled than he is!) yet ALSO puts both of them far away from Jiang Cheng (who seems to have beef with them and seems more stressed than usual), and all of this has to be accomplished WITHIN THE NEXT TWENTY MINUTES AS GUESTS ARE ACTIVELY TRICKLING INTO JINLINTAI.

Either Lan Xichen suspects him of murder, or Lan Xichen did not think bringing two bonus Gusu Lan attendees to the Cultivation Conference with zero notice would be a problem, and some part of Jin Guangyao hopes it’s the former because the latter is frankly more offensive.
