Another fanart of my lovely Sansa Stark
There are many fun reasons to have a character avoid using guns, but I think "this otherwise-awesome fighter is a really terrible shot" is an underappreciated one. Yes, they're available in my setting and would work against my enemies. No, I don't have a moral code against them or a power that makes them redundant. I just can't aim for shit!
In general IMO the more badass and hypercompetent a character is, the more they're enriched by having one skill they're just absolutely hopeless at. Terrible shot, terrible liar, terrible dancer, no poker face, no sense of direction, can't drive, can't swim, can't cook, can't read, always broke, always late, always falls for a certain trick...
So many "I was born too late" takes are actually "I was born poor" like I'm sure you WOULD have loved whatever historical quirk you're talking about, but sadly you would not have been allowed to do that. You would have died in a coal mine aged 13.
Being afab will not protect you from dying young in a coal mine. They put wee lassies down there all the time and sometimes they died, just as the boys did. Your understanding of historical gender roles is filtered through the gender roles of the mid 20th century. Yes you would also have faced other gender based violence on top of this probably, but that doesn't make you exempt from death via coal mine.
Also thank you to every single person of colour in the notes pointing out how white the take I'm critiquing is. You are 100% right.

I think one of the funniest abortion stances I've heard was from my parents neighbor. He's a like, hard-core libertarian viking larper guy who is very tall and very fat and very bald.
He believes a fetus is human with a soul, but also its "basically attacking the woman's body" so if she wants to get rid of it, that's "basically self-defense". He compared it to shooting a home invader. So he supports abortion not as healthcare, but as killing a baby in self-defense
Y'know I'm so glad someone reminded me of this. Because this was also discussed.
My stepmother did NOT like the way her Libertarian Viking Neighbor framed pregnancy as the fetus "attacking the woman". She incredulously told him this was extremely disrespectful to expectant mothers to portray pregnancy as so violent and negative.
Libertarian Viking Neighbor's response was that people consensually hurt each other all the time, and "there's like a whole community about that, with the acronym the one that starts with a B" And his reasoning was that if the mother was consenting to bring attacked by the baby, it in fact wasn't violent and negative because there was consent.
He brought up people consensually hurting each other, didn't go for one of the obvious answers like boxing or body mods or something, no he went STRAIGHT TO BDSM and he DIDN'T EVEN REMEMBER THE ACRONYM
I don't like to admit it, but sometimes I actually miss John Green.
Sometimes I can almost hear him.
Loie Fuller, early 1900β²s
my paternal grandparents were married until my grandfather (emotionally, physically, and sexually abusive alcoholic misogynist) (these things were not Widely Known, though) died when I was nine, and at their 50th wedding anniversary some well-meaning younger women were sort of lightheartedly saying like, "wow, fifty years is such a long time to stay together! how did you do it, how did you manage to stay married this long, what's your secret?" and my grandmother just sort of looked at them and said "you just don't get divorced"
I think of this... often. she was born in the first decade of the 20th century. like. this shit is. so recent. and, in many cases, actively ongoing in spite of some very serious material improvements in womens rights
I've seen so many fucking miserable couples in unhappy or outright abusive marriages celebrate 25 and 50 year anniversaries like it's an accomplishment to choose to stay with (or be forced to stay with) someone you're miserable with. and this is why I think we need to implement Divorce Showers.
As someone who has not done the wedding/baby thing are lots of events in life that really should involve your supportive circle getting you practical household gifts to help you with a major life thing that just donβt, e.g., divorces in which you have to start completely over, moving out on your own for the first time
We kind of do βhousewarming giftsβ sometimes when people buy a house I guess but thereβs no βthis person is going to live in an apartment alone making just above the poverty line for the next 15+ years, they could probably use some silverwareβ registry
