✨I wanted to officially announce our “Padme’s Closet” panel at @starwarscelebration Europe! I will be hosting with @eveillecosplay as well as our two new creators, @linzhinzstudio and @the.naboo.senator! ✨We will be discussing the basics of how to get started in recreating these elaborate costumes, where to find information and research, as well as taking a deep dive into some of our personal projects. A month from today I finally have the opportunity to compete with my Couture de Force Alice at the @cosplaycentral Crown Championships qualifier at @emeraldcitycomiccon ✨💚 • This costume is one of the most thorough and involved builds I’ve ever done, from the inside out, and it’s felt a little forgotten since I made her for D23 Expo 2019. .:PATTERNS:. The meticulously researched and scaled blueprints of everything I create, garment or prop. I’ve draped, hand-drawn from scratch, used illustrator, as well as altered existing commercial patterns to make the perfect pattern pieces for my costumes. It’s something that has taken me years to learn and master but now it feels like a natural part of my process. .::LIGHT AND SHADOW::. I made both of these costumes in the fall of 2019 and it was fun to contrast the two different moods I was going for, to represent each character. Witch Sailor Venus is cheerful and elegant, while fallen Seladon is mournful and conflicted. .::YELLOW::. Thought it would be a good time to talk more about my Sera Myu style Sailor Moon wig ✨ I used an @ardawigs Chibi and one long clip to create this look. The first thing I did was fix the bangs to make the part straight across. I had to add more wefts to do that (not pictured). Stubbing the pigtails was the most stressful part and it was the first time I had ever tried it. I was able to shave the stubs down very short and smooth before soaking them in tacky glue to dry overnight. (The short lengths of hair I cut off from the stubs is what I used to cover my odango, so don’t just throw that away!) Using one half of a ponytail clip for each, I gathered and cinched it around the stubs with elastic cording, tying lots of knots to secure. For the odango I began with a foam base, painted in a matching color. I attached the shield gems with a foam friendly epoxy. Using a clear tacky glue, I soaked small pieces of the short wig clippings at a time and wrapped them around the foam odango. It helps to keep your fingers wet with water at all times. This took days because I only did one piece at a time and let it completely dry before I did another. The ponytail covers are made of a matching, soft tulle mesh gathered at the top edges and cinched around the top of each ponytail. Then I wrapped and glued a strand of wig hair around the ponytail, like the stage version had. I also decided to sew in wig clips around the hairline of the wig to keep it secure on my head while wearing. Then I extended the hairline a bit with added wefts and ventilating. • WHEW! .::PLEATS::. My Myu Moon and Venus are the most pleated things I’ve made, for sure! They have two tiers of pleated skirts, done with lots of math, pressing, and tacking to keep them in shape and in place. .::TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES::. Some of you probably remember when I had started some goldwork months ago for the front panels of my Spyro dress. Well, I didn’t finish for UOCC but I do plan on starting again this fall/winter. It’s important to me that I see this through. • It was and still is a completely new technique for me and I learned a lot with what little I’ve done. I’m self-taught from the internet, plus a couple books I bought. Huge thank you for @sarah_homfray_embroidery and her incredible YouTube videos. I also bought some supplies from her online shop. • All of these videos/photos were taken at the beginning of the process, I’m further along than this now. It’s very time consuming, with a definite learning curve, but I really enjoy it. Plunging cords and securing them to the back side is the worst part but doing beading and purl is the most fun. I really have to be gentle with my hands and fingers, this can be painful, so taking breaks and stretching helps. Also, protecting the tips of my fingers with silicon thimbles keeps them from getting sore or even bleeding. .::HATS::. I haven’t made many hats but I really love how my little top hat for Alice came out. I forgot to take photos while sewing the actual hat 🤦🏼‍♀️ but you get the idea. 💖.::PINK::.💖 To change gears a little bit, I’ve been working on some upgrades for my 2019 Couture De Force, Alice in Wonderland. One of them is a second petticoat, to better help hide the cage crinoline hoops. I wanted to add an interesting element so I decided to ombré dip dye the bottom section with @ritdye. Pretty easy to do! It works best if you pre soak the fabric in water beforehand and wring it out a bit before dyeing.
