Amber looked up to Sebastian from the floor then to Tously, who merely sighed and picked her up. Setting her across their shoulders to keep both of the creatures out of each other's reach. "Let's remove that temptation before an argument breaks out." Studying the kid, Tously saw the doubt flicker in. "You're butler's right. You wouldn't be able to just switch places into another plane. That kind of thing wouldn't be possible." They looked to the butler calmly. "As for myself being here it's either something that my kind can do or something solely linked to me." They thought calmly. "I have always had a talent for mapping. I knew every nook and cranny of this manor the second I stepped foot inside. I always know exactly where I stand in the world. I've never been lost. Locks and doors mean nothing to me in any form..." They hummed in thought. "Matters of time and space on a greater scale maybe."

Beast Amber’s words brought Ciel back to himself - they hadn’t divined that he’d briefly questioned the outcome of his every terrible decision.

He didn’t glance at his demon to see if Sebastian had, only squares his shoulders to signal that whatever had come over him had passed.

“You did?” Ciel had to wonder if that included the secret armoury - the monster could very well know it was there. “For someone trying to put me off hiring them you’re doing a terrible job at it.”

As his Master had voiced exactly what he’d been thinking Sebastian approached a different tack.

“I wonder if you’d survive crossing into the realm of the Reapers?”

He had his theories about how the Reapers might pop in and out of the plane so easily but he certainly wasn’t going to influence Tously’s investigations.

Ciel’s eyes widened. “Undertaker must have been using those doors - how else would he have gotten off the ship?”

Damn it, if Beast Amber had taken the job offer Ciel could have so much more easily gotten his answers, but now they were in a competition to find the next hunt he’d have to hope that the monster would be amenable.

“Mr Tously, if you can find out how the Reapers cross through the realms I’d be grateful if you could bring me the information. It might be a key to delaying the Undertaker’s ambitions.”

Tously grinned at them both. "The humans that tried to tame me were rather good at names and titles."

They pulled Amber's glasses from their coat and slid them over her eyes. They turned the rim of their own glasses, turning the tint dark once more. Concealing their emotions further.

"If there is a doorway, I can find it." Tously pulled on their gloves once more. "But I'm not likely to share the information unless it benefits me."

They moved towards the door calmly. "You can't gain something for nothing, as you well know."

Looking backwards towards them. "By the way, the snakes you got slithering about, they're spooking the stray cats in the gardens."

Tously headed out the door. "I'll see myself out. Chao." They lifted a hand over their head in a wave as Amber trilled a meow.

They walked down the hallway, tall and unworried. If the demon was injured it gave them a little leeway. A pole of a portrait slightly askew. Mis-alining a flower vase a fraction of a millimetre. Smudging the polished wood of the stair rail.

Little annoyances. Petty and fun.

While the butler had finally given up a bit of information that might prove useful, Tously had a nasty habit of playing with fire.

Getting into the automobile out front, they started it up and music started to play. As they turned down the drive, something about someone being a devil in disguise rang out.

Tously laughed. Oh how close they were now. They just needed to find the door.

for the record im not technially 100% anti-AI, in the sense that its a broad category of tech being lumped under one umbrella term so it feels over-zealous to say i hate all of it all the time forever. but i also think trying to discuss what it actually IS good for is difficult right now when i cant take one step without something trying to convince me to use chatgpt to summarize my life and speed up my hobbies and turn my friends into chatbots and optimize my life into oblivion. i am certain there is nuance to the topic but can we stop cramming the square peg into the round hole before you start trying to sell me on the legitimate benefits of the square peg. please.

here's my super-quick, easy-to-digest summary that i use when i can't spend more than like 15 seconds on it but need someone to know the basic distinctions:

generative AI - bad evil AI. chatbots, LLMs, image generators, etc. this the one that steals shit.

analytical AI - helpful medical AI. this the one that helps detect cancer early.

game "AI" - fake AI. 100% human created and dictated. this the one that determines game mob behavior n stuff.

losing the battle with my own self-control so will briefly comment and say that categorizing certain types of ai as straightforwardly good and other types as "bad evil," even for the sake of summary, doesn't really hold water. just to give two counterexamples to the distinctions drawn above, large language models ("evil") are being used by human rights groups to parse huge datasets about police abuse while analytical ai ("helpful") is also the kind of ai that animates facial recognition software and the increasingly ubiquitous searchable license plate databases that police are using to stalk people. the goodness or badness of a given ai tool has less to do with its type and more to do with things like scale and scope, transparency, ownership, and contextual application.
