May - Tanka poem
In my memories,
You were my beacon of light.
In my heart I know,
Though you seemed to be my light,
You were just like me: Human.

Valentine's Academia Part Two
Third person narrative 1,446 words ♡Light hints of romance♡
Valentine was awoken by her alarm clock at 7:00 AM on the dot. The loud, shrill ringing jolted her awake. She quickly brushed her thick brown curls out of her face and reached for the button on the top of her alarm clock. Once she pushed it, the ringing finally stopped. She sighed, satisfied for the moment. She slowly sat up on her bed, sunlight from the window instantly covering her face. It was the Monday of her second week of classes. Valentine found it funny that a week had gone by since her first day of class. That day, when she began walking with Dolores and listening to her professor’s lectures, felt like a faraway memory in Valentine’s mind.
She gazed at Dolores, who remained sound asleep in the bed across from Valentine. Dolores seemed so peaceful and cozy, laying underneath her fluffy pink blanket. Valentine giggled as she noticed the tiny white stuffed bear that Dolores clutched in her arms. Valentine couldn’t remember the last time she had owned a stuffed animal. It was then that Dolores’s eyelids fluttered open. Valentine frowned, feeling worried that she might’ve awoken her.
“Sorry…did I wake you?”, Valentie whispered.
“Mmm…Yeah…Maybe…What time is it, anyway?”, Dolores muttered as she rubbed her eyes.
“It’s about 7. We should start getting ready for class now. We should try to get there early.”, Valentine spoke softly.
“Sure…I guess so.”, Dolores admitted with a sigh.
Dolores slowly sat up in her bed, her pink blanket falling around her waist. Valentine watched as Dolores yawned and stretched her arms, reaching toward the ceiling. Valentine noticed the tangles in her black wavy hair and the way her tan skin shined from the sunlight pouring in from their window. Valentine realized that she was paying more attention to Dolores’s appearance than her own. Feeling a pang of embarrassment from that realization, Valentine stood from her bed and walked towards her dresser.
Valentine took her school uniform-a blazer, a tie, and a pencil skirt-out of her dresser before laying the clothing neatly on top of her bed.
Valentine began to lift her tank top off of her body before noticing Dolores’s attentive glances from across the room.
“Hey! Do you mind?”, Valentine asked with a hint of annoyance in her voice.
“No, not at all. But if you want, I can turn the other way.”, Dolores stated calmly.
“Wh-whatever. Do what you want. I have to get ready for class! Which you should also be doing, by the way!”, Valentine blurted out, frustration seeping from her voice.
As Valentine pulled her tank top over her head and pulled her shorts down, Dolores began to get out of bed. She walked over to her own dresser and pulled out her uniform before lazily tossing it atop of her bed.
Valentine slowly buttoned her blazer and wrapped her tie around her collar, making sure it laid against her blazer neatly. Valentine thought of her modest and mature professors and upperclassmen as she got dressed. She wanted to make a good impression on all of them. Valentine hoped to be viewed as intelligent and mature, just like all of them. Just like she had always aspired to be.
Once Valentine finished getting ready for the day, she discreetly glanced at Dolores. Valentine stared at her lips as she applied a coat of shiny gloss over them. Valentine’s eyes roamed over Dolores’s body, taking note of her skirt that had been rolled up in order to appear shorter and the pink heels she wore on her feet. For a moment, Valentine stared at the shiny black socks that reached Dolores’s knees. Valentine tried not to stare too long, as she didn’t want to get caught by Dolores or to be distracted by her. Valentine brushed aside her thoughts of Dolores and her slightly risque clothing. She walked towards the doorway, wearing her grey backpack with her silver water bottle in hand.
“Are you ready, Dolores? It’s time for us to leave.”, Valentine declared as she stood near their bedroom door.
Dolores turned and smiled at Valentine. She quickly grabbed her red purse and car keys before walking towards Valentine.
“Yeah. I’m ready. Let’s go.”, Dolores spoke softly.
-
Valentine wrote in her black notebook as she listened to her Literature professor speak to the class. She wrote down anything she found important from the lesson, which was basically everything that came out of the professor’s mouth. She was sitting near the back of the class next to Dolores, who had insisted that backrow seats were the best seats in any classroom. From time to time, Dolores subtly copied Valentine’s writing onto her own notebook. Although Dolores had given her permission, she still frowned upon Dolores’s reliance on another person’s words.
Valentine set her pencil down and stared at the professor. The professor was a mature and thin woman with silver hair tied into a bun. Valentine was hooked onto every word that Professor Dain spoke. She listened intently to the Professor’s teachings on formatting and grammar within academic essays. Although many other students were likely bored out of their minds, Valentine's only focus at the time was the voice of her Professor.
Valentine continued to stare at the Professor and write down elaborate notes until the class finally ended. The large classroom filled with noise from the bustle of students putting away their books and pencils, getting out of their seats, and rushing to the door. Valentine sighed as she slowly put her notebook and pencil in her backpack and stood from her chair. Suddenly, she felt a hand wrap gently around her wrist as she stood to leave. It was Dolores. She stared at her shiny black nails, her eyes widening as she realized that Dolores was touching her.
“Do-Dolores…Why…” Valentine’s small voice trailed off as she struggled to think of what to say to her.
“Valentine,”, Dolores whispered softly.
Dolores looked down at the ground as she held onto Valentine’s wrist, her lips downturned. Her sudden shy demeanor caught Valentine by surprise, as she always saw Dolores as someone unafraid to speak or act as she pleased.
“Why don’t we get lunch together today?”, Dolores asked as she turned her head and locked eyes with Valentine.
-
The two girls sat across from each other at a small picnic table on the courtyard of their school. There were a few other kids sitting on the grass in the distance, but Valentine didn’t seem to notice. As the wind gently swept through their hair, they enjoyed their fast food lunches.
“You know, I never took you as someone who would eat fast food!”, Dolores spoke between bites of French fries.
Valentine looked up at her with furrowed brows.
“What does that mean?”, Valentine asked before biting into her cheeseburger.
“I mean…I’ve never seen you eat fast food before. And you usually eat tons of fruit. You love fruit more than anything!”, Dolores said matter-of-factly.
She was right, of course. Valentine had always loved to eat fruits more than anything else. She especially loved the taste of blueberries. For a moment, she was stunned by Dolores’s knowledge of this. Then, she thought back to all the times she had packed snacks for her and Dolores. Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries.
“Oh…I guess you’re right. But…I must admit. I also love cheeseburgers. They’re just delicious!”, Valentine declared joyfully.
Valentine was shocked by her own burst of chatter. Yet she didn’t stop herself.
“Hmm…I never really liked burgers. They always tasted like…mushy chum.”, Dolores declared plainly.
Valentine took in a sharp breath and quickly shook her head.
“No way! They’re the best! You just haven’t eaten a good burger if you think they taste like that!”, Valentine exclaimed.
Then, a thought crossed Valentine’s mind. Although it was a bit of a risky decision, Valentine didn’t care at the time. Valentine wasn’t worried about risks for once. All she cared about was continuing to enjoy her time with Dolores.
She picked up her cheeseburger and held it in front of Dolores’s mouth. Dolores stared at the burger in confusion, causing Valentine to giggle.
“Go ahead! Try it! I bet you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the taste!”, Valentine spoke with a smile.
Dolores’s eyes widened as she stared at Valentine’s smile. She moved her head forward and opened her mouth. She wrapped her lips around the burger and bit down. As she chewed and stared up at the sky, she savored the taste of meat and cheese. She then looked back at Valentine. They both smiled at each other before Dolores ducked her head and looked down at her lap bashfully.
“Yeah…I guess it’s alright.”, Dolores whispered softly.
