Do you think tumblr will ever learn the difference between “I’m defending this person because I agree with them wholeheartedly and I am also like this person” and “I’m defending this person because your behavior is dangerous and you need to stop”
IMO, blurring the lines between “I’m defending them because they’re right” and “I’m defending them because you’re taking this too far” is step numero uno to cutting down the very existence of fair trial and democracy–even in places where saying that might seem a little dramatic.
Mob mentality is extremely strong in humans and it’s also extremely dangerous. Mobs don’t think things through. Mobs kill and they destroy and they can’t be reasoned with. Someone trying to calm a mob down isn’t someone defending the ~problematic party~ It’s time we re-learn that.
Adding to this: I’ve noticed a concerning amount of people (both online and IRL) think it’s OK to tell lies about someone as long as they’re branded as a bad person. If you ever call them out for lying, they’ll just say “why are you defending them” or “who cares, they did [X bad thing]”. If someone is really bad, then you shouldn’t have any motive to lie.
If someone ever asks you “who’s side are you on” it’s perfectly reasonable to answer “I’m on the side of the truth”. I cannot tell you the number of times someone got called out for a minorly problematic thing and within a few weeks their accusations end up mixed in with deliberate misrepresentations and outright fabrications tacked by a mob, purely to make it look worse so justify increasingly disproportionate punishment and mob hatred. Anyone questioning the disinformation becoming another target of the mob.
The internet is really making me come to understand why the rules of due process are so fucking strict, because it’s increasingly normalized for random unaccountable people to behave with the ethos of a corrupt cop or a prosecutor in the goddamn witch trials. I’ve had to defend people I dislike, I’ve had to defend people I straight up hate, because I just don’t think that disproportionate vilification and malicious lies are acceptable under any circumstances.

This is the Facility emblem. Y'all see the letters there in the bottom half of the wings? It's a Base32 cipher that translates to "Guilde d’étude des phénomènes anormaux" OR "Guild for the study of anomalous phenomena" (decoded by @kipperzz a while back-)
Checks out for the Facility, considering they're interrogating moth people and looking for vampires and selkies pretty sure about the selkies-

The ink at the tip of Finneas' quill was long dry. Idle blotches and drips scattered around the top of the parchment of a would-be letter he attempted to pen an hour ago. Recent months were filled with discoveries beyond his wildest dreams, yet in these desperate moments the troubled mage couldn't find the words.
Silence was a rare gift in the tower these days. The absence of the whirring drone of aetheric portals to the Beyond made him uneasy. Down the crisscrossing stairs and corridors of the magical tower Finneas called home, Faust was sound asleep for the first time in days.
Discovering that the threads of reality were not as tightly woven as once believed by all who came before them was proving to be a challenge in ways he could never have expected.
He believed they'd found precious, delicate truth.
His darker half believed they'd found power. Horrifying, tremendous power.
What little candlelight remained was scarcely enough to keep the darkness at bay. This unwritten letter was meant for the other truth he'd discovered in the Beyond. The fact that without their beloved Weaver this beautiful tapestry of magic and mischief the trio created together was doomed to fray and unravel in ways that would have dire consequences.
In the end, the parchment was bare and untouched, spare for the freckles of ink left behind like teardrops of the very darkness he sought to restrain.
