Rick and Carl Grimes THE WALKING DEAD
I love this break down of their conversation. Rick clarifying that “it just happened” doesn’t mean it was a casual fling that happened with no thought. That it means it happened just recently—last night. And Carl withholding his smile of approval until his Dad makes it clear that he’s not toying with his BF—that this is different, special, meaningful.

One of my favorite Richonne fics. I haven’t read it recently, but I was thinking about it and it brought up some thoughts I remembered having when I first read it.
I loved many things about this AU, it was definitely fun in many ways. But I think I especially appreciated the following:
The way Rick and Michonne’s grief over Carl’s death was so intimately displayed within their home - the home that held so many memories with their boy. The way we could see they were each grieving in different ways, but were able to truly see each other’s pain and show up for each other was so touching. She needed that, he needed that, and I needed that to be quite frank. 😭
After rewatching TWD recently, I always wondered how Michonne would have reacted after learning how the events of that day transpired. In some ways I felt like we bypassed Michonne’s hurt/grief over how the bridge incident occurred after the time jump. While Rick survives in this fic, the exploration of Michonne’s anger, hurt, anxiety and feeling of betrayal was well deserved. I appreciate that it gave that moment a voice, because it needed it.
Simply, I just want to say that Michonne’s humanness, feelings and experiences will always deserve to be acknowledged, seen, met with empathy, and not skipped over or overlooked. She has been fully valid in having any and all emotions we’ve seen her experience. She deserves so much more visibility when it came to her pain, because it matters just as much as her strength and power.

The thing that I like about the best friend label is that it makes it clear that Michonne’s relationship with Carl was independent of her or his relationship with Rick. It also honors the fact that one of the special things about their relationship is that while she loved and nurtured him, she didn’t baby or “mother” him. She showed respect for him in a way that adults rarely show to children. And while Carl was at an age when kids are moving away from their parents, he felt no need to move away from her. She was something that his parent could not be. Rick said it himself “I can’t be his father and his best friend”. As his best friend, Michonne gave Carl something beyond what a parent could give. Was he her son? Most certainly. But best friend is not inferior to parent. They just fulfill a different role.

I love what this little interaction tells us about Sydney. She doesn’t know Donna, but because Syd is a compassionate person, she provides this bit of comfort and support. Compare this to Stevie and Claire who have known Donna forever, but seem to be hoping she’ll crash out and bring drama to this family gathering as she’s done so many times before. Carmy is correct about all the attributes he calls out about Sydney in episode 10. And here she extends that kindness to his Mom who genuinely seems to be trying to get better. Like her son.
I spend most of my time lurking around here just nodding my head when I agree with something. But chiming I. Because I haven’t seen anyone commenting on Natalie serving as Carmy’s role model and guide for healing. Nat is the only Berzatto sibling who has faced the trauma of their childhood and come out on the other side to establish a healthy relationship and generally happy life. She went to Al-Anon, she stepped away from the family restaurant to protect her own well being and returns only on her own terms. She has a healthy and loving relationship with Pete, a man not from the neighborhood who adores her and has managed to have a nice relationship with Donna, while showing complete care and understanding of Natalie’s complicated relationship with her Mom.
Since season 1 we’ve seen Natalie trying to prod Carmy down the healing path she has taken. She pushes him to go back to Al-Anon. She returns to the restaurant to help him. She lets him know it’s okay to not love the restaurant business anymore. When she learns he’s leaving the restaurant, I read a sense of RELIEF on her face as she hugs him. She recognizes he’s taking a difficult but necessary step. As she is his sister before she’s his business partner, she’s filled with gratitude and relief that he’s stepping toward healing. Carmy is following in Natalie’s footsteps.
As a SydCarmy shipper, this affirms for me that they are endgame for the show—assuming it is in fact a comedy (destined for a happy ending) and not a tragedy. Like Nat, Carmy needs to step away from the restaurant to be able to heal and he needs to heal to have a loving relationship with anyone. It won’t be Claire because her entire history is enmeshed with the toxicity of his origins. The show continually codes her with Donna. Carmy will find happiness with someone like Sydney—the “Natalie’s Boyfriend (Pete?)” parallel. She is not of the family and provides an alternative model for love—one that is gentle and nurturing. If not Sydney, then some as yet unreveales character—and it’s way too late in the game for that.

The idea that something is wrong if all the votes aren’t counted by tomorrow evening is utter nonsense. Anyone looking to stop the count early or to throw out legally cast ballots on Trumped up technicalities is simply trying to stir chaos. Let’s not give them the satisfaction.
Debate Takeaway. Did everyone take notice that when the president was asked to condemn white supremacist groups he failed to do so. In fact he told the Proud Boys (a well armed white Supremacist group that presents itself as a “militia”) that they should “stand by”.
