Katniss’s dad bringing baby Katniss to the hob so he can show her off is the sweetest thing ever and something I always knew was canon. That man LOVED his daughters.

Thinking about Katniss’ description of Haymitch in The Hunger Games, the way she has no care for him, and very little sympathy. She even says she detests him upon first impressions.

Does that mean Burdock never talked about his old friend? That Haymitch pushing him away was enough to break that?

Do you think Haymitch looks at Katniss and sees the man who tried so hard to hold on to him? The man who caught him as he begged to join his family as they burned, who spent day in and day out trying to get him through this, and it took Haymitch physically harming his girl to get him to leave? Do you think Burdock understood?

Maybe Burdock and Asterid couldn’t talk about it without guilt, feeling like they abandoned him. Asterid isn’t exactly known for her emotional openness. So they didn’t. Burdock, seeing him stumble on to that stage day in and day out for almost two decades, drunk beyond his years, couldn’t deal. Think about Asterid realizing her daughter’s life was entrusted to him now. Do you think they talked, after everything? Do you think Asterid ever visited Haymitch’s house, the scar on her forehead not even visible anymore, feeling some sense of misplaced duty for her husband and daughter? Trying to repay him for her child’s life?

Maybe they talked a little, in District 13. Haymitch would be sober for the first time in decades, and there was precious little else to do. Those days looking at Peeta or Katniss as they recovered. Do you think Haymitch ever apologized? Would she have accepted? Would anything mend?

I don’t know man. This book broke me and now I’m making it everyone’s problem.

I would think it was painful for both of them, and I think Burdock knew Haymitch wasn't thinking straight when he hit Asterid. So I think he forgave him in his heart. As for Asterid, I would also think that maybe she feels guilty for his addiction. The syrup was a slippery slope. I think all of them felt very guilty about the whole situation, didn't know how to mend things, and in Haymitch's case when it would have been safe to talk to them again. He probably went to his funeral. Maybe sang in the forest, next to the covey's graves.

But I also believe wholeheartedly that Haymitch and Asterid talked when he brought her babygirl back home. Probably it was enough of an apology for Asterid, probably she thanked him for her husband. And when Gale was whipped, they spent some time together again.

So yes. I feel like in thirteen, when they have time, they would mend things, maybe finally talk about Burdock. I have to think this is what happened because if I think otherwise I will be crying for the next year.

Comparing Haymitch and Katniss' narrative styles is so funny to me because he's a yapper and she's a gatekeeper. He drops more lore on D12 in the first two chapters of SOTR than she does in the entire trilogy.

Haymitch is like "Yeah, so this person is related to this person who's related to this person and things are this way because of this and this thing actually came from here and this person is actually my best friend and also here's this extra tidbit of random info cause all my lore dropping comes with it's own additional bonus content and all my unnecessary commentary."

And Katniss is over here like "Tf do I care for if y'all know all the lore of District 12? I'm talking about my beautiful husband's beautiful eyelashes."

Thinking about this from a lens of Katniss’ childhood, specifically how the rest of the district reacted when her father died. When Haymitch’s father died, his mother already had a business to keep afloat and knew their neighbors well. We hear often about Haymitch’s friends and the neighbor kids and how they all interact and play together.

In contrast, Katniss describes herself as kind of a loner, with only Madge, who doesn’t live in the Seam as her only friend. On top of that, Katniss’ mom is noted to not fit in because of her background as a merchant’s daughter. Katniss notes that she and Prim, with their light hair and light eyes don’t fit in, and I wonder if this also contributed to Katniss’ isolation after her father’s death. (In addition to her mother “going away”, and the fact that it was known to be a pretty bad winter when they were starving, Katniss doesn’t mention a single person in the whole district who helps them (EXCEPT PEETA).)

It seems odd to me that Katniss didn’t play much with the other Seam children as a child (and only MET Gale after her father’s death!). I’ve seen a couple of posts wondering if Burdock was involved in the rebellion, and this is some of the most concrete evidence that I have that other people in the Seam avoided their family. Not sure if it was for rebel activity, for singing Covey music or if it was enough that he hunted and married a girl from a different class. Katniss thinks of people less as her community and more as people who she can get something from if she needs it.
