whenever i think about sending the brothers to space, i get sad at first thinking about 'wait what about jody and claire? :(' and then i realize i can just send them all up into space

like idc idc, send the whole fam up, make it a cosmic roadtrip or something. court is piloting, colt is the one doing the space walks, ryland is science-ing with claire as his protégé, and jody can be their engineer or botanist or captain

how did claire and jody end up with them? that's not important. the real question is how the hell did they convince stratt to send them as well

what do we think about ryland being the one who kills their father but court takes the fall for it

ryland comes home to their father waterboarding colt and he doesn't know how long this has been going on but colt is drenched and choking and if he doesn't get colt out of their father's hands now, he's not sure if—

he's moving before he's aware of it. but he's not moving to where their father is about to murder his brother. no, he's going upstairs and into their father's room—a bedside drawer that really only has one thing in it

their father yells something at colt (still somehow oblivious to ryland's presence) and pulls colt's head back under the running water and ryland's right arm is so heavy but he tries to keep it steady—

vaguely, he's aware that the front door opened and their father finally turning around—

ryland recoils from the force of it, his ears are ringing

the hand around colt loosens and then two bodies hit the floor

then there's a hand on his and he instinctively grips the gun tighter—a face appears in front of him, similar to his own but a little older

court. it's court who's trying to take the gun from him and so ryland lets him. court's mouth is moving but ryland can't make anything of it, he's just aware that court is wiping down the gun with his shirt before he fits it into his own hand

he pushes ryland towards colt who's still gasping and wheezing but alive

the first thing ryland hears when he's regained his hearing are sirens

i know there's probably a proper way to arrange honorifics when someone has more than one but i really like how in grace's last video log he says "doctor captain ryland grace"

like yes, he is, firstly, someone who helps before he is someone who leads (yes i'm well aware he has a PhD and not an MD)

(i like to think colt would still use "have" rather than "had". ryland's role in his life is a present thing, his absence does not change it)

okay enough with the coltlandgentry angst (for now) and now imagine the siblings reuniting on the worst day (month?) of their lives

it's set during the events of the fall guy—when colt is being framed; also immediately set after the gray man—when claire and six are running away; but set before the events of project hail mary—like a week or two after the UNESCO conference

court reuniting with ryland first because ryland is also hiding away after that disaster of a conference and then they find out in the evening news that their brother is now a wanted man for murder

the two are in shock but both agree that they have to find their brother regardless, they don't believe for one second colt is capable of whatever the hell he's being accused of

coltlandgentry au but it's the misadventures of a wanted man, a freshly disgraced scientist, an unknown (dead) man, and a kid (who's a little stressed but otherwise finds the trio and the situation funny) running away from the media and cops
