There was another extended silence. Eddard looked between her and the bundle of leaves, then the smallest hint of a smile piqued his lips. From the bouquet, he plucked a darker leaf, browning and curled, and held it up beside her temple. “It’s the same as your hair, my lady.” Lysa cackled behind her. “Oh... Ehm. Thank you?”

In which Catelyn is the uncontested heir to the Riverlands after Edmure dies in infancy. Her betrothed, second-son Ned Stark, moves south to ward with Cat and her family leading up to their marriage. The art of charm comes quite clumsily to both of them as they navigate the unorthodox dynamics of their future, with her set to be warden of her realm and Ned, effectively, to be her consort.

In which Robb is the hostage and Theon the heir, growing up together amidst the unforgiving aftermath of an Ironborn victory. (Throbb role-swap AU)

For day 6 of the Throbb Fortnight 2023 event, with the prompts "role/fate reversal" and "power dynamics"! The latter will be more relevant as the story progresses, but I wanted to get this started for the event!!

In an astonishing after-effect of looking into the palantír, Pippin discovers that he can communicate with the Spirit of Boromir through reflective surfaces. The young hobbit also discovers his true courage.

“Whatever did you do now, Pippin?”

The hobbit sprang upright. He was alone in the lodging, and his bed was facing the door. It had not been opened. There were three narrow windows high above his head, and they were sealed.

“Is this Common-Sense speaking?” he replied. “I have been told I may hear it from time to time.” Pippin gave a wry smile to the empty room. “I am going mad. Quite mad. I shall be the mad Old Took of Hobbiton, if I ever return.”

“You are not going mad, Pippin.” The voice had a familiar Southern lilt.

“Who–who speaks?”

“Pick up your sword.”

Pippin did not much fancy battling a disembodied voice but if said voice had a weapon, he supposed it would be wise to wield one of his own. Gingerly, he leant down from the bed and retrieved his barrow-blade.

“Can you see me now?” said the voice, and it seemed to vibrate through the sword hilt.

Pippin nearly dropped the blade: there was a face reflected in the silver that was not his own. It smiled at him.

“Boromir?” Pippin squeaked.

Gods, Theon thought, I could kiss you right now! “A fleet, if you asked nicely enough.” His voice lowered. Coyly, he would admit. Perhaps a mite playful. He could blame the wine. “Maybe even a large enough fleet to scare off the Westmen. The Iron Islands’ independence, for an alliance that Tywin Lannister would never even dream of accounting for – it plans itself, doesn’t it?”

Theon and Robb plot their next step in the war, unaware it will be their end.

14 and 19 for Moonlight Vigil!

Hey Ila!! Thanks for the ask :D Always happy to talk about Moonlight Vigil!

14- Talk about the fic’s opening scene & how you approached it.

Ooh, I’m really glad you asked this one! The opening scene for Moonlight Vigil is actually a pretty special case, as I basically sat down and busted it out in only one or two sittings (I’m a very slow writer, so this is notable to me lol). I’m also proud of myself for not using a scenic opening (“it was a dark night” “the room was cold”, etc.) here, and I think the dialogue cold open worked well for it overall.

First scenes are pretty tricky for me in general, as I tend to overdo the exposition early on, so I really have it my best effort with this fic to not do that lol

19- Any darlings cut during editing?

No darlings, per se, but a couple of scenes were shortened for conciseness - the last scene (pre-time jump) was trimmed down considerably. I thought it would be thematically cohesive to have that scene end with Ned falling asleep to another wolf dream, but it just rambled for too long so I settled for him hearing a wolf howling as he left the woods. Not a major change, and nothing that I’ll regret deleting, but still a little touch that would have been neat to include :)
