Every time I read this beautiful poem, I start crying because it makes me so sad that you feel the need to apologize for being yourself. I’m exactly like you, and every stanza of that poem resonates with me, the 17 year old whose best friend of 7+ years abandoned her without a second thought. It’s hard to realize that people can just stop caring when you’re someone who devotes all of your energy into caring about the people you love. But you’re right. I now can thank my stars for that frightful day when I realized my top priority was emotionally abusive and took advantage of the depth of my capacity to care. Because now I see the ones who wanted my anyway. My swiftie friends, who now have become my best friends, stuck with me through a time when I didn’t think I could even care about myself. I’m not sorry I’m so much like you, because just like you, I’ve learned so much about myself this past year and I think I’m finally coming into my own. And I truly believe I’m doing better than I ever was. I love you so much Taylor. I truly don’t think I could have picked a better role model back in middle school when I had no real identity or understanding of my value as a person. And now I get to see you with Lauren and Lydia, my best friends in the world, on July 14th. I finally feel like I can dance like nobody’s watching without feeling judged by the eyes of people who I used to think mattered. If you see three teenage girls who look like the embodiment of So It Goes when you’re on B stage 1, I hope you know that you being true to yourself and so honest with the thousands of people who see you for who you are has impacted our lives in so many positive ways. We’ll always be by your side, and we can’t wait to see where you’ll go next!
