❛❛ ariadne. have you seen her? ❜❜ an old fisherman selling his morning catch in naxos' square squinted at the stranger, craning his neck back at the sudden intrusion, until recognition and bewilderment lifted his white wiry brow. it shaved near a decade from his sun-baked expression, and he giggled gleefully, shaking dionysus' hand so hard it could have very well rattled something out of place between his ears. his words were intelligible from the excitement, but mainly out of the god's own lack of patience, so he repeated himself through a strained laugh and polite nod ❛❛ yes, i know. good to see you too -- but where might i find ariadne? ❜❜

the fisherman muttered something that sounded like temple, and in his eagerness dionysus scarcely waited to hear the rest. he ran through the market as if every second of the next twenty-four hours counted. because it did. this single day would need to make up for fifty lost years, fifty missed anniversaries, and who knows how many more distant days until the end of his intolerable servitude to zeus. dionysus leapt over baskets of fruits and flowers, pilfering a few bulbs of wild hyacinths in the process. then meandered through a flurry of vespas, and all the gawking islanders who'd recognized him on the road to the temple. he waved at whom he could, half hoping they'd forgive his inattentiveness, half not giving a damn about anything if it stood between him and his wife's overdue reunion.

swift sandaled feet finally found sanctuary in the cool grain of a familiar marble floor, while his heart still raced to catch up. he inched forward in silent steps, holding what remained of the wind mangled hyacinths close to his chest, and forgetting how to breath when he finally caught a glimpse of @zeitkeist 's striking silhouette, standing in front of his effigy.

somewhere in the moonbrush, strange music rioted through the trees, and a voice, so rich with rapture, was sending tendrils of magic like fish hooks, luring wanders deep into a forbidden, ivy-cloaked desmene past the waterfalls of the gilded run. there, one would find a growing crowd of sygorn's missing elven, gathered intimately around the source of that increasingly chaotic tether-hymn: a strikingly handsome archfey, adored and abhorred by most as an exiled patron of feywine and music.

dark, unruly, sweat-drenched curls framed his concentrated countenance; his iridescent skin was scantily draped in amaranthine silks and dappled furs; and his fingers fiddled furiously on the strings of an instrument that could only be described as a more twisted -- and far more powerful -- conductor of sound than a bard's usual mandolin.

it feels like he's watching a bad re-run of the same tired trope playing out through the vignette screen of a rain-fogged, dirty pane. out of some facsimile of affection, he memorializes the scene all the same: the electric hum of a flickering motel sign, the red white and blues of a silent siren flashing through the broken blinds, the last glimpse of his lover's cold, lifeless fingers slipping out from under a plastic black shroud as the paramedics lifted him onto the ambulance. that was as good a goodbye as he'd get, he supposed, taking in a long drag of a cigarette, waiting for the decay to set into his lungs. it never does.

the exhale brings in a winged shift in the room, not death -- the kindly one -- but the sound of all the gods' dread barbed with rose-finch feathers. idly, dionysus turns to regard the goddess and the mess he made of the room, his dried up despair dragged down the sharp contours of his face in the form of smeared glitter and kohl. ❛❛ i'd say i told you so, ❜❜ he says through a spasmed breath. ❛❛ but i'm starting to sound like a fucking broken record. ❜❜
