I'm the Male Lead's Patron

Time for another manhwa recommendation! Today I'm going to go with I'm the Male Lead's Patron.

The story goes like this:

While scrolling through videos one night, Chae Yura stumbled across a live feed. Set in a modern day world that had ended thanks to a sudden invasion of monsters from dungeon dimensions, the live feed followed one of the human survivors, Choi Jihyuk. At first Yura assumed it was someone live streaming a video game.

The truth turned out to be much worse.

Jihyuk wasn't a character in a video game - he was real and it was his world she was watching fall apart as he struggled to survive it. The only way she could seem to help him at all was to click on the 'become a patron' link next to his feed. It gave her the ability to not only communicate with him but to also buy him items online to help him.

For four years, Yura obsessively monitored the feed, spending her time and her money to support Jihyuk as he fought his way through his world, going from a barely surviving F Class to one of the rare S Class ranks in his world thanks to her care.

Then Yura died.

And Jihyuk was left alone without knowing why his patron and constant companion of four years had suddenly abandoned him.

Desperate people will do amazingly desperate things when they have nothing left to lose.

This is such a fun read. It's an enjoyable twist on the troupe but what really sells the manhwa and makes it so enjoyable for me is the relationship the male and female lead have. He's stubborn and trying to be cold, she's not having that and doesn't let him get away with any nonsense and they both care so strongly and unapologetically about each other its refreshing. There's a four year history of knowing each other and it shows. They bicker almost constantly but its not hurtful or harmful - its literally the 'old married couple' dynamic if the 'old married couple' actually really, really enjoy each others company and don't even pretend otherwise. They're very much in this mess together. I lost a lot of sleep because I didn't want to stop reading and I laughed a lot more than I have in a long time. If you enjoy The S-Classes That I Raised for its world building and characters making smart use of the 'video game' rules, you'll enjoy this one as well. If you like characters with a balanced power dynamic that are utterly devoted to each other but Will Not Put Up With Your Shit this is a good one for you.

The Chick Class Hunter is Filial

Okay, I've got a new one for y'all and this time its the 'Unprepared Guy Ends Up A Dad to a Too Smart Little Girl' trope.

I personally eat that stuff up with a spoon.

So - this is Gru (spelling may vary). Gru is four. Gru has also awakened as an S-Class in one of those 'video game rules apply, here - suddenly - be monsters' world.

The problem with this of course - is that Gru is only four. A four year old going into dungeons to peddle her crafted items is no bueno. Well, its no bueno as far as Gru is concerned because she needs an adult to access the app she's using to store the money she gets paid by other Hunters for her healing potions. What's an S-Rank four year old orphan to do? She's going to get herself an adult obviously. There's money to be made here.

This is Mr. Onjurim. He's the leader of the Hyunak Guild, one of the biggest, brightest hunter's guild in South Korea. He's all business, arrogant thanks to having become the 1st ranked Hunter is South Korea, has very little patience for anyone that can't keep up - and tends to sleep away a large portion of his day.

Which is the perfect adult for her as far as Gru is concerned.

Jurim is well aware he'd be a terrible guardian for a four year old - but when he finds Gru in a dangerous dungeon peddling her wares he doesn't see any other option. Despite his couldn't-care-less exterior, the man is the leader of a guild because he has a need to protect and Gru needs protection - both from the dungeons - and from the people in their own world that would take advantage of her skills.

And there we go - that's the set up of the story. Young, inexperienced-but-trying new dad and the four year old that adopted him. Oh, and there are dungeons and monsters and bureaucratic dangers and Hyunak members to help and rival guilds and -

I am absolutely loving the ride! Jurim isn't an asshole and he side-steps a lot of the usual tropes by being a genuinely caring guy. Gru is adorable and while the 'system' upgraded her mentally, she's still very much a kid. She loves easily and acts like a four year old would (or at least enough like it that the story feels right). The side characters are fun, the story is full of the usual 'how to abuse game dynamics' these kinds of worlds have, the monsters really are terrifying and dangerous - and the story knows what its heart is and lets that flow through everything else.

Gru finishes a dungeon and exists with the team she went in with to find it raining.

Everyone's family are there to pick them up but there's no one for Gru. She's used to this. She was also the only one at kindergarten that didn't have any family to come pick them up too. It's okay. She knows how to get back to the Guild on her own. Except

Just - guys - my little shriveled heart grows three times its size every time I get a new chapter of this manhwa. If you enjoy The S-Classes That I Raised for its theme of family, you're going to love this one.
