Not sure about anyone else, but I re-read all my favourite AO3 comments when I’ve had a rough day, so if you’ve ever taken the time to write a deep, funny, or just kind comment, thank-you.

For anyone who hasn't seen them before, Hidden Search Operators are handy tricks you can use when you're either searching or filtering AO3.
summary: string is a generic way of explaining that you can search AO3 for a specific word that appears in a summary. You can do this from the search bar in the header, from the Any Field box at the top of the Advanced Search form, or from the Search Within Results box at the bottom of the filter menu.
Examples:
summary: Bruce
summary: "Bruce Banner"
summary: Bruce OR summary: Banner OR summary: Hulk
You need to put quotation marks around your search term if it is more than one word. The quotes make sure that the site searches for those two words together.
The other two operators listed work best in the Search Within Results box.
expected_number_of_chapters: 1 will return results where every fic has only 1 chapter currently posted.
You can use expected_number_of_chapters: -1 if you want results where every fic has more than 1 chapter currently posted.
otp:true will return results where there is only 1 relationship tag on the fic. If you want results where there are 2+ relationship tags (and no fics with only 1 relationship tag) then you can use otp:false

Based on some rumblings I heard, I ended up quickly throwing together a fun little WIP bingo sheet! I'll admit I largely wrote the prompts for writing, but I think a good number of them should also apply to art!
Ultimately, the goal is to have fun, and finish whatever WIPs you can (without burning yourself out or having a bad time). If you needed a sign to pick up that project you've been putting off, the time is now!
Moments together away from the party

Mine! Happy holidays, Swen! Here's a little 5k bit of fluff for your holiday fic dining. Regina Mills is targeted by the Cat Distribution System. Features an eeny kitten.
It's always
"When will fanfic writers update their stories?"
And never
"Does this fanfic writer have adequate enrichment to engage in writing behaviours?"
Fanfiction writers (Scriptor fictus) are intelligent animals who need plenty of enrichment as well as encouragement! If they're stuck in poor conditions (e.g. have studies, work, have to actually write to have something written) then they require the proper enrichment to engage in more healthy behaviours, like writing. Remember, due to poor breeding and socialisation, over half of all fanfic writers suffer from low self confidence and executive dysfunction so take care of them!
Give your fanfic writers proper care. Fanfiction writers are a life long commitment.
I'm not a writer but having "met" several of them via my rec account I can tell you this is true for several authors. If there is one thing I've learned on here, it is that authors love engagement with their readers.
I try my best to comment on most of the fics I read. Whether is just a "thank you" or "good job" to quoting my favorite part, I know the writers appreciate it.
You are very, very correct.
Likes and kudos are nice because it’s an acknowledgment that the reader did like the work, but boy howdy when I get a comment/message/ask/reblog? Makes my day! And does, in fact, give the brain more Go Go juice so I’ll actually Do A Thing instead of just thinking about the thing
Xena Warrior Princess 6x8 The Ring
In the spirit of encouraging people to comment on fanfics while also making it easier to do so, I feel obliged to share a browser extension for ao3 that has quite literally revolutionized the comment game for me.
I present to you: the floating ao3 comment box!
From what I've seen, a big problem for many people is that once you reach the comments at the bottom of a fic, your memory of it miraculously disappears. Anything you wanted to say is stuck ten paragraphs ago, and you barely remember what you thought while reading. This fixes that!
I'll give a little explanation on the features and how it works, but if you want to skip all that, here's the link.
The extension is visible as a small blue box in the upper left corner.
(Side note: The green colouring is not from the extension, that's me.)
If you click on it, you open a comment box window at the bottom of your screen but not at the bottom of the fic. I opened my own fic for demonstrative purposes.
The website also gives explanations on how exactly it functions, but I'll summarize regardless.
insert selection -> if you highlight a sentence in the fic it will be added in italics to the comment box
add to comment box -> once you're done writing your comment, you click this button and the entire thing will automatically copied to the ao3 comment box
delete -> self explanatory
on mulitchapter fics, you will be given the option to either add the comment to just the current chapter or the entire fic
The best part? You can simply close the window the same way you opened it and your progress will automatically be saved. So you can open it, comment on a paragraph, and then close it and keep reading without having the box in your face.
Comments are what keep writers going, and as both a writer and a reader, I think it's such an easy way of showing support and enthusiasm.
HERE'S THAT BITCH IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR
OH FUCK
that evil woman from once upon a time was so fucking hot 🥵
I love that there were crazy fangirls who wanted these two straight women to fuck on a disney show so bad. Its equality!
We're still here!!!
You're still HERE??!
Oh, we're very much still here. And we're still getting new authors and artists!
emma “i did not sign up for this shit” swan
did i follow someone by accident again by scrolling too fast on the mobile app or are you a longtime mutual who has changed their url, profile pic, and entire identity in the twelve hours since i last logged on?
Harley Quinn who recently kidnapped Bruce Wayne and texted Scarecrow to meet her: "Alright Brucie Boy, you're probably wondering why I kidnapped you, and don't worry! It's not for anything "villainous" or the like. You might not remember it but I remember me and you being in med school together along with Crane and I thought we could form a club since we never got to start one in school since you dipped in the middle of the year!"
Scarecrow who just walked in: "That's seriously why we're here? I thought you needed my help. You said it was urgent."
Harley holding up a tote bag: "It is urgent! I made t-shirts and I need to know if they fit!"
Bruce who honestly just wanted a nap: "Let's just see the shirts Quinzel."
Scarecrow: You're actually going along with this!?"
Bruce raising a brow and looking down at the rooes that are binding him to a chair: "I don't have much of a choice..."
Scarecrow: "...Fair point. Okay Harley show us the shirts."
Harley pulls out a crop top shirt proudly, it's half red, half black that has 'OFFICIAL FUCK FREUD CLUB' on the chest: "I got em personalized! Bruce gets a black turtleneck because he was the soft goth boy in med school and he's still a little goth baby. John you get a flannel that has the sayin' on the back! Aren't they cute?"
Bruce remembering how much he hated Freud and having to listen to his methods and ideas in school, and how he, Harley, and John would shit talk him in their study group: "Okay I actually love this idea and the shirts."
Scarecrow trying to hide how touched he is: "You got me flannel?"
Scarecrow, after 3 hours of group bitching: I still cant believe you're willing to do this- Harleen and I are Super Villains now!
Bruce, having been untied and drinking the Irish coffee Harly brought out: A) I have never had any sense of self preservation-
Harley: Which we remember vividly!
Bruce: -and B) I run a multimillion dollar company while having at least 5 kids; you dont know how much chaos I have to put up with on a daily basis. This is a vacation by comparison.
Harley: Wait - what do you mean by "at least" 5 kids???
Bruce: I do not adopt these children. They adopt me.
Harley: Okay you have to be bullshitting me.
Bruce: One day a blonde one named Stephanie just showed up at my house with my middle child saying they were dating, they broke up like a month later but she hasn’t left yet.
Harley: ...honey I’m pretty sure that’s a home invasion-
Bruce: I mean my butler did give her a room and I offered to adopt her, but she refused that...however she’s still there and stealing my coffee every week so I don’t know.
Harley: ...why-
Bruce: Her Father’s Cluemaster.
Harley: Oh FUCK that guy. Yeah, give that poor sweetie some hugs and a college education, stat.
Harley: *pulls out a massive fucking psychology textbook*
Harley: In the meantime let’s talk about your rampant abandonment issues and repressed desire for a family!
Bruce: Oh christ not again.
Scarecrow: Finally! Time to get to the fun part!
Harley knows full well that Bruce is Batman but enjoys the game too much to ruin it by saying anything out loud.
Scarecrow still has no idea, and does not notice the striking similarity between the array of orphans at Wayne Manor and the costumed children running around the city with weapons every night.
They. Are. Trying. They're gerrymandered all to hell.
But sure, mocking poorer areas for being impoverished and having shitty housing, complaining about having to "support your asses" and telling those oppressed by right-wing governments to "get an education" and "get a job" is really helpful here. All those stupid poor people not having good enough jobs so you have to support them. Very Blue position, Mx Blue State.
Fun fact! In 2018, Democrat Mike Espy ran for the Senate seat that Thad Cochran had vacated, and won 46% of the vote. In "deep-red" Mississippi. Without significant (if any) help from the DNC because, idk, probably that Mississippi is deep-red and he supposedly didn't have a chance. Had the DNC -- or anyone outside of Mississippi -- actually given a shit about Mississippi, he might have won.
Stop fucking giving up on the red states. It is fucking soul-crushing being a progressive in places like Mississippi, in no small part because of this exact mentality. Not only is the state gerrymandered to hell and the state government scorns, mocks, and silences you at every opportunity, but also because absolutely fucking no one outside the state is trying to help you because they apparently think you don't fucking exist.
Nobody gives a shit about Mississippi, which is how the Republicans have a supermajority across the entire state government and the GOP can use the state as their proving ground.
While at least 46% of the state do not want this and have no voice, and a significant further percentage probably don't want it either but don't think there's any point in trying, because, again, it's fucking soul-crushing to do so, and Mississippi is "a lost cause".
It doesn't have to be like this. Just fucking help us instead of sneering about how shitty red states -- especially the South -- are.
like literally if i didn’t want to see some weird nonsense i wouldn’t be consuming scifi
“ohh this episode is about meeting a bunch of dinosaurs who developed space travel and left earth to go live on the other side of the galaxy isn’t that crazy?! isn’t that silly?!” sure yeah maybe a little but by focusing on that but you’re missing the narrative reason for it which is to provide a starting point to explore religious authoritarianism and the production of scientific knowledge
just a spoonful of [nonsense] helps the [critical thinking about uncomfortable social and structural problems that are such a fundamental part of the background radiation of our lives that we can't see them] go down
Some other bangers;
"Jack of all trades, master of none" ... "but ofttimes better than a master of one."
"Blood is thicker than water." "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the waters of the womb."
"Money is the root of all evil." "The love of money is the root of all evil."
there's also "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" which conservatives are oh so fond of saying
bootstraps are, well, straps on your boots. you cannot physically pull yourself up by them, and that's what the original phrase meant. "pulling oneself up by the bootstraps" is meant to be an impossible task
writing and craft and stuff
"Mia do you have any writing advice pet peeves"
why, yes i do. presented without too much comment:
it's a scam because you need to use both things to tell a story effectively. if it's all show, your novel is going to be over 200k words and half of it will probably be a travelogue. if it's all tell, we'll have a hard time getting into the characters' thoughts and feelings. show, don't tell exists to help newer writers explore what's going in their characters' minds. it's not a hard and fast rule once you've learned how to characterize and give context. so please, do some telling. do some beautiful telling.
The opening chapter of Spindle’s End by Robin McKinley is, in fact, an info dump. But it is so gorgeously told that you don’t CARE. In less-skilled hands, it would be one of those grim backstory slogs where they tell you all about the kingdom and how magic works, but it it beautiful, it sparkles on the page, and there is a great deal of telling well-told.
