so I wrote a lil one shot based off my stoner!jisung hc lol. I couldn’t get this off my mind, and it has since then been inspired by some more recent events. hope you enjoy!

You never talked too much about that night at the convenience store, you just fell into a new kind of normal.

Jisung was your best friend, so you two did everything together. Now, you guys kissed and held hands too, even in front of your friends. No one really commented on it, save for a few juvenile “oohs”, or the guys high-fiving when they thought you couldn’t see it. But then neither did you or Jisung.

You would text often, asking if the other ate or sending cute selfies. You met with him for lunch sometimes, or would FaceTime him on your way home from class. Nothing out of the ordinary, except he called you ‘baby’ now. That was something you’d hope you never got used to, it made your insides melt a little every time.

In a way, it felt like this is how it always should have been. Like an unspoken agreement, a promise made in a past life. Your hands fit perfectly in his, you finished each other’s sentences sometimes, you rolled each other’s blunts.

It just felt right, to nap with him and press your lips against his neck. To watch movies but make out for at least 30% of them or pause them so you could take a picture and make a meme out of it. To hold hands while shopping together. To freely and comfortably sit in his lap while lounging in a friends living room. Summer nights passing by with him, each one feeling like it could be the best and last.

Then, life got hectic for you both. Classes started up again, and since you worked that meant less time to spend with friends. Between early morning classes, homework and multiple projects, you had started to spend less and less time with Jisung.

There were no more nights staying up until 3am, no more random adventures through the city with the guys and Jisung’s hat on your head. No more lazing around in one of your beds until noon. Hell, you hadn’t smoked in weeks, let alone with Jisung.

Jisung assured you that you guys would find time soon. That things would settle down and you guys would pick up where you left off. It kept you going as you trudged through every week. But even then you could tell that something was off.

The time was never found, even when things did settle down a bit.

Before, Jisung didn’t mind just coming over without warning, usually takeout on one hand and sometimes a batch of Felix’s weed brownies. You used to do the same, often sleeping over after getting baked. Sometimes, you’d find yourself wrapped up in his arms and a blanket somewhere in-between the two of you because you both slept like demons. Often scrambling to get to work on time because it was so hard to leave Jisung alone in bed; he was so cute in the morning, making grabby hands as you rushed to get ready to leave, whining about all the kisses he’d miss out on all day.

You two used to be attached at the hip, no matter your workload or schedule. But then one day you woke up and realized you weren’t even sure if you guys were friends like that anymore. Texts started to come slower, less frequently. No more updates or little snippets of raps he’d been writing. The guys were starting to ask where you’ve been, why Jisung hasn’t been himself lately.

At first, it bothered you. Why hasn’t he asked to hang out? Why hasn’t he just popped up at your apartment like he used to? These things go both ways, you guys were busy adults. He should understand, he could find the time.

But then you started to really think about it: these things do go both ways. When’s the last time you stopped by to say hi?

In reality a simple conversation needed to happen, whenever you could find the time. Jisung isn’t a liar, he isn’t a flake. But he gets nervous sometimes. And you wonder if you made him nervous. By not saying anything, by being too busy, by kissing him back that night. And maybe that’s why he hasn’t been around.

A small part of you ponders: what if he doesn’t want you around anymore?

What if he’s second guessing everything? The idea that he may be wishing nothing happened between you is a little extreme, even to you, but still yet it flies around your brain like a gnat.

I know him better than that.

Instead of driving yourself crazy for days, you think it’s best to just reach out yourself. Someone has to do it eventually.

And the only way to know is to ask.

You try to ignore your phone for the rest of the day, but the anxiety of seeing him is driving you wild. With every hour of the day that passes you regret inviting yourself over more and more. Dread the conversation that must be had, that might not go the way you think, the way you’d like. However, you know deep down it was just better to get this over with, no matter the outcome. It’s been weeks, and you couldn’t stand to wait any longer. Now, it was only two hours away.

When Jisung answers the door, he has just gotten out of the shower. His hair is still wet, pushed back off his face but sticking to his neck a little. He looks cozy, wearing a crew neck and his favorite pair of sweatpants (the ones you liked to steal sometimes). You wish you wore something more comfortable, but you opted to wear the jeans and top you were wearing earlier today. You could steal something of his, anyway (right?).

Maybe you’re just a tad too optimistic.

Still, he smiles so big as he steps aside to let you in. Before you can even finish taking off your shoes he’s already pulling you in for a hug. He’s warm from the shower, and you lightly inhale some of his favorite citrus body wash. It’s enough to cause you to forget to breathe, so then causing you to go rigid in his arms. When he pulls away, his brows are knit together in concern at your perceived lack of enthusiasm.

Suffer a bit. You shake the bitter thought away, offering him a tiny smile.

He’s being too careful with you, you think. Rightfully so, but it’s still uncomfortable to sit with. You used to kiss him breathless upon entering this same apartment.

Almost like he’s thinking the same thing, he takes a step back so as not to crowd you any longer. He can’t hold your eyes with his for too long, but you know he wants to. “It’s been so long, I missed you.”

Nothing about him has changed, except he looks exhausted. The bags under his eyes aren’t too dramatic, but they do not go unnoticed by you. You’re used to Jisung bouncing off walls, being a lively chatterbox. Today, his voice is a bit shaky, body folding into itself. You know this Jisung- he’s anxious. He also looks like he’s biting biting his tongue. Like he has so much to tell you and he’s holding the dam back from breaking.

You want to hug him back properly. You want him to step aside and let it flow because you just hate to see him so sullen. But you’re not ready with a response, an explanation of your own. Where the fuck have you been?

“Me too Ji. It’s been too long.” You look behind you, wondering where his roommate is. “Is Felix here?”

“Nah, he’s out tonight. He told me he might not be back until late.”

“Aw, I missed him so much. I’ll catch up with him eventually.”

“Hopefully sooner rather than later. You want some water?”

At first the conversation between you and Jisung is awkward, like two people in the beginning stages of friendship, not sure what lines were even there to avoid crossing. It irked you, because he’d never been this guarded with you before, ever. Not even when you first met him. It was quite the opposite when he started rambling about Asian elephants after you took a hit from his weed pen almost two years ago (“you know they’re Asian elephants because the head is raised higher than the back end of their body.” “wow.”). Especially not when you crawled out from under the same thin sheets as him over the summer. You wanted to kiss him when you met him at the door earlier. Now, you’re sitting on opposite sides of the couch as you catch up. It’s only one seat cushion but it feels like an ocean between you. What a trip.

As you continue to catch up, you find out how he’s been spending some of his non-academic time. He’s been busy with school, but he just started another music project with Chan & Changbin.

“I haven’t been sleeping well, it seems like the only time we have to get together is late at night or on weekends. But it’s been a lot of fun, we do good work.”

“I can imagine, but that’s a shitty schedule. I’m glad you guys are still able to make it work.”

“Ah, yeah. You gotta make time for what you want, you know?”

Huh.

He tilts his head at you. “You good?”

In that moment you realize you’d let your emotions show through on your face. Annoyance. Bitterness.

“I’m great,” you force out. It’s not exactly a lie. You could be better, you suppose.

“You seem a little off. What’s on your mind?”

Am I not something you want?

“Nothing, it was a long day.”

Jisung sucks his teeth, raising his chin at you.

“Nah, don’t give me that generic ass answer.”

Even after this time spent away, you can’t hide from him.

“I’m serious!”

He scoffs.

“I know you. I know something is going on in that pretty little head of yours”

You know it’s stupid, you know it’s petty. To be mad at Jisung for having a life especially when yours was just as booked and busy. But sometimes, especially when it comes to Jisung, you can get a little stupid, and a little petty.

Not tonight though, you wouldn’t let yourself. This wasn’t over something small or trivial (or maybe it was, no one is really sure at this point), and you could push him even farther away from you if you weren’t careful. An angry Jisung is a nasty Jisung. What flew out of his mouth in those rare moments could break you if you weren’t careful tonight.

Instead of giving in to the urge to stir the pot or push his buttons, you decide to lie. Truly the lesser of the two evils, you suppose. This isn’t how you expected this conversation to go, or not go, but you didn’t come all this way to start a fight.

“Okay honestly, I’m just stressed out.” You are, but you’re also feeling some kind of way now. You know he wasn’t directing that statement toward you, at all. Except you just can’t let it go. You really didn’t want to let it ruin your night. You came to see him, your best friend. “Work and school are… a lot.”

Best friends that make out and hold hands sometimes.

“Ah, I’m sorry baby.” Baby. It rolls off his tongue freely, like he’s been calling you this for years and it’s just weird to call you by your first name. The affectionate term tugs you out of your sour thoughts and begins to soothe your hurt ego. “Come here.” He slides closer to you on the couch, encouraging you to come closer to him. You want to hesitate, stay at arms length, an ocean away at the end of the couch. You want to remain in limbo, you want to argue with him first, something. But in the end you oblige him, letting him pull you into his side. Letting him card his fingers through your hair. It’s been such a long time since you’ve been close to him like this. His warmth starts to melt any coldness you were prepared to direct at him and you curl into him as the pads of his fingers massage your scalp. “You wanna talk about it?”

His husky voice vibrates through his chest, you feel it with your ear pressed against his collarbone. He could lull you to sleep like this. You missed his voice.

“Not really, no.” Your voice is smaller, barely audible, you’re not sure he heard you at first. “I haven’t seen you in weeks. It’s been weird.”

Jisung has a funny way of making you feel so warm and comfortable that you’ll tell him just about anything. Even when you try biting your tongue, your thoughts just come tumbling out of your mouth.

“I know. Do you still wanna smoke? We can just watch a movie if you want, order food...”

“No, I’ll smoke. It’s been a while, god knows I need it tonight.”

He chuckles, kissing the top of your head. You begin to fall back into your habits of easy conversation, natural affection.

“Need anything else?”

“Just you.” The words come easily, like no time was lost between you. Like you saw him yesterday. “It’s been a while since we’ve just hung out.”

“I know, too long.” You press even further into him. He’s happy to whisper to you, like if anyone else hears him the bubble around you two will burst. “I’ll roll a blunt or two. Order something with my phone, yeah?”

“What do you want to eat?”

“Hmm… tacos?”

While the food is on the way, Jisung lights one of the blunts he rolled and inhales, long and deep. When he exhales, the smell of the smoke is pleasant, familiar. He passes it to you, and you take a hit, letting the warmth of the smoke settle in your chest for a few seconds before breathing it out into the living room.

“It’s been a while since I’ve smoked,” he says. “Like, weeks.”

“Same. Just haven’t had the time to sit and enjoy it.”

“Yeah.” He takes another hit. “It doesn’t hit the same if you’re not there.”

Scoffing, you take the blunt back from him. “Shut up, you have the rest of the guys to smoke with.”

“I know but I just like to with you. I like to spend time with you. Even if we don’t smoke.”

Here we go.

“Yeah, okay.”

You don’t even try to hide the irritation in your voice this time.

Jisung twists his face at you, clearly taken aback by your tone.

“I haven’t heard from you in almost two weeks, maybe one TikTok or something from you.”

“We’ve both been busy-”

“I know.” You exhale smoke and agitation through your nose. “It never stopped us before. We always found time.”

Jisung is silent for a while.

“I got scared.”

“Of what?”

“This. Us. I don’t know. I didn’t hear from you either.” He sinks into the couch, gaze shifting off to the side and a fingers digging into the arm of the couch. His jaw tightens, and you know he’s upset too. It makes you want to curl into yourself. “Maybe you didn’t want to spend as much time with me anymore. So I just gave you space.”

You want to punch yourself for snapping in the first place, you kept holding off and were doing so well. The regret washes over you like a wave, because you knew. These things do go both ways. You did know him. He was nervous, just like you thought, scared like you. You knew him, and still thought he’d just toss you aside. Didn’t even think about what it felt like on the other side.

Maybe you didn’t know him.

Trying your best to get him to look at you or distract him from his thoughts, you try brushing your foot against his leg. The fact that Jisung feels like you may have tossed him aside supersedes any anger or bitterness of your own.

But without thinking of the implications of your next statement, you try to console him. “Hannie, I love spending time with you. You’re my best friend.”

He winces and your heart drops, why can’t you say the right thing? The right way?

Just a best friend.

Like many times before, it’s as if he was thinking the same thing. He gives you a wry smile, hurtf evident on his face.

At that moment, Jisung gets the notification that the food is almost at the door.

You finish the blunt and eat your food in silence, high beginning to cloud your head and your body starting to float. The place you usually order from served you and Jisung’s favorite tacos. You always got a large horchata, and Jisung a fruit soda. He ordered strawberry tonight. The meal tonight was, of course, delectable. Even more so with your tastebuds in overdrive.

You turn on some show on one of the many streaming platforms Jisung pays for (“I need the variety!”), letting it distract you as you settle back into the couch. Jisung is still at the other end, legs sprawled out but careful not to touch yours.

You never picked up the previous conversation, and maybe that’s it, that’s all. But you know it isn’t. Best friends fight, best friends grow apart. But best friends don’t look at each other like that. They don’t kiss and hold hands and share clothes and bedsheets. You ate in silence as the high washed over you. Neither one of you dared to take it any further.

With the weed clouding your mind, you find yourself looking towards his end of the couch. The light from the TV illuminated three quarters of his face, and though you could never forget how utterly handsome Jisung is, it still floors you. His eyes are lidded from his high, but he’s watching the show intently. You wonder what could possibly be on his mind.

The way you want to sit between his legs and lay on his chest is what’s on yours. He’d be so warm, strong arms enveloping around you. God, you wish things could go back to how things were. But you two settled for this tonight, heads in the clouds and minds far away. Two hearts separated by an ocean the size of seat cushion.

Eventually, he rolls his head in your direction, staring back at you. Giving you a languid smile, he slowly nods in your direction.

Instead of shifting away, you settle in and try to focus on the show. It works for about 10 minutes. But Jisung makes it very hard to focus on anything but him tonight.

As you breathe him in the scent of his citrus mint body wash has your head spinning again, and you grip his arm a little tighter in hopes it’ll your bring you back down to earth.
