How the gentle wind beckons through the leaves, as autumn colors fall…
haven't played the dlc yet is this not what happens
Main POVs of the Queen’s Thief
I am completely ready for the feels Return of the Thief will give me 🙌
“Maybe I shouldn’t push my luck,” he said. “I wish you wouldn’t,” Costis said faintly. “Your god might be offended.” ― Megan Whalen Turner, The King of Attolia
I had this scene kicking around in my head for a while so glad to finally have an excuse to get it out!!
One of the wonderful things in the Queen's Thief series:
In King of Attolia, Costis is very clear that he's pretty average. He lets the reader know consistently that other people in the guard are more attractive or better swordsmen. He seems to be the epitome of Just Some Guy.
In Thick as Thieves, Kamet needs you to know that Costis glows in the sun. Costis is so pretty everyone wants to sleep with him or assumes everyone else wants to sleep with him. Costis is so strong he beats an elite team of highly trained fighters. Costis's rippling muscles glisten with sweat. Etc.
And it's a great reminder of one of the central storytelling conceits of the books, which is that there's no such thing as an objective narrator. Everyone is to some degree unreliable.
Costis is very humble and also kind of oblivious. He's shocked to learn that apparently everyone has tacitly agreed he's the natural successor to Teleus. We can't really trust him to tell us if he is in any way exceptional.
Kamet, on the other hand, is thirsty and in denial. He's lying to himself about his own attraction to Costis, and convincing himself it's just some kind of journalistic integrity to tell the reader what Costis's muscles are doing in any given situation. We can't really trust him either.
Queen's Thief by Megan Whalen Turner, the series that wants you to know: no narrator is reliable!
Baby Henry and Martin in Legacy of the Forge (he's still such a little shit it kills me 😭😭😭)

THEY'RE LITERALLY SO IN LOVE AHHHHHHHHHHH
bonus domestic bliss:
Henry and Mutt
Tapestry I drew for kcd fanzine. It was a lot of work, TBH I so rarely do ornaments and spent some hours figuring out how to draw that leaf vignette. Here's the one of those moments when Henry with Mutt just wandered throught deep forest and came out to new adventures...
I, alone, will fix it
"i asked chatgpt" well i asked moira and she told me to go to bed
One thing in particular that I like about Silk from the Belgariad is that he also has multiple names
Different people know him differently and won’t even know they’re talking about the same person
It’s awesome
Oo and same with Liselle, I mean Ik the books have definitely got a lot of gender stereotypes and they’re very old but c’mon Liselle is cool
Welcome to my ancient Roman villa. We’ve got running water. Fancy, I know. I paid a lot for that. There’s our household gods. They live in the breakfast nook. Oh look and here’s my husband Julius. He’s playing games with our daughter Julia and our daughter Julia and our daughter Julia and our daughter Julia and our

Yikes!
so much of the problem with the discussion of gender in fantasy (and historical and fantasy - historical) is that it assumes a very simplistic gender binary where Woman = sit inside all day and embroider in enormous floofy skirt / Men = stab things with stabby sword and I cannot highlight enough how that is such a TINY fragment of the jobs people of ANY gender actually held in the medieval era, even among the nobility
genuinely how the act 1-2 transition felt to me ngl
"When he fell asleep, he dreamed the queen of Attolia was dancing in her garden in a green dress with white flowers embroidered around the collar
Value WIP since I'm dragging my feet working on the color version.
