"Why can't the freaks on AO3 just go and make a site for all the gross stuff and leave AO3 alone."
Because AO3 is that site. Because AO3 was that site long before you decided AO3 was better than the sites you bullied us off of before, and I can promise you if someone somehow comes up with a fanfic site you like better specifically for the 'gross stuff' you'll try to bully us off that too so you can benefit from it.
AO3's specific core purpose is to preserve fanfiction, yes, but it was also instigated as a host site for the fanfiction that kept getting yeeted off other platforms like Wattpad. Its designed to preserve all fanfiction, not just the fanfiction you, personally, think is 'allowed' to be written.
AO3 is the site for all the gross stuff the freaks make. We've been there just as long as you. We've been funding it just as long as you have. AO3 has specifically said you have a place here. The timeline was literally:
Wattpad/FF.net/LiveJournal purge fanfics > AO3 is born > The people who's fics got purged moved over to AO3 > AO3 gains popularity as the best functioning site > The people who pushed for the fics to be purged off Wattpad move to AO3 > The same people try to push for AO3 to purge fics.
AO3's source coding is open-access. You go make a polished, strict, rigid site where nothing 'icky' is allowed. You go make a site where you can control what is hosted. We already have our space.
AO3 was specifically made for the stuff likely to be purged from other sites.
It was built around "we need to own the servers" so we wouldn't have to deal with anyone else's judgment calls about what was acceptable in fanfic: Not corporate sponsors, not evangelical religious groups, not "save the children" activists... and not other fans who think that The Gross Stuff should be banned from public view, only shared via private email after you've sent in a request heavily laden with special keywords.
Some of the founders remembered when slash fanfic was kept under the table at the dealer's room, distributed with brown paper wrappers only to people who knew to ask for it specifically.
And they said: Fuck that. Our art is not a crime and we're not going to be ashamed of it. If you are ashamed to have your art next to it - there's a whole wide internet that's ready to host your G-rated genfic.
AO3 was built for the stuff that was unwelcome elsewhere.

Bonus meme:
I just have to say, I absolutely love both Leverage shows. Eliot is my favorite.

joey on the radskier scene:
"We talked about it a lot, we really did. And Hugh Skinner, who plays Radovid, is one of the most incredibly insightful, talented human beings that came to the set with this insight and with this… As I've said to [Lauren] before, but he honestly has a way of looking at you and you feel like he just can see right through you. So when it came to that scene, which for me it was my favorite scene to play in season 4, Hugh and I sat down with [Lauren] and with Tracy and a few other people, and we were like, "I think we can… can we go for it?" And [Lauren was] like, "yeah!" And summon up everything that you've ever wanted to say to an ex in your entire life. And we did. We really tried to pitch that scene as so varied and as so fluid. And it's about a constant exchange of power that is being batted backwards and forwards in the space of about three minutes. It was joyous to play. But it did mess me up for a few weeks afterwards."

*vibrating with anticipation*
I AM HAVING SO MANY FEELINGS RIGHT NOW. (Whatever they're going through, I promise you, gay sex would fix it.)
“You wouldn’t. Unless you are insinuating I am a bad teacher… Or that you really are a flower that won’t prepare what you eat?” She said with a raised eyebrow. Still holding out the dragger and animal.
“Fine. I am a flower who would much prefer the food served to me already prepared.” Jaskier relented, there were times to be stubborn and this time he wasn’t prepped to commit to it. Well…one must align with their own strengths and this was not one of his.

Fallon grinned and pocketed her knife she was offering.
"Now was that so hard?" She said in mocking voice as she went to start preparing their food.
"It's alright though." She said after a moment. Surprisingly sincerely. "You're our flower."
Manon was fine with the quiet. She understood quiet anger. She just had to remind herself it wasn't directed at her.
At his words, the look in his eyes Manon softened. Her hand leaving his to cup his cheek.
"Your British comes out when you are angry. It's kinda sexy." She said with a smirk. It really was.
The bags in her other hand did feel heavier though. It had to be the first day Manon had really said yes to anything big that his parents show up and poke at that wound.
Jaskier huffed a small laugh, the tiniest smile tugging at the corner of his mouth at her comment. “Well, then I’ll try to get pissed off more often, just for you,” He replied, leaning just slightly into her touch.
“Sorry it had to be today...Shall we head home? Back to the beach house?"
Manon hummed. "Please do. Just for me." She echoed, moving her thumb over his cheek.
"Don't apologise for others. None of this is your fault." Manon said, softly yet sternly. "Let's head back. Afternoon nap on the sofa?" She offered. She wanted to be close to him right now.
Arguing with Julian was always a very hard thing for Manon to do and with the stress of everything else she kept the words back she wanted to say.
That he was responsible for his subject. She wasn't that. She was his. And even if she was, choosing not to read that wouldn't make him neglectful.
She did settle down a bit at his promise though. She hoped he would keep it.
Manon moved her chair closer to his so that they could read at the same time. Shoulders almost touching. A bit of comfort even if she couldn't bring herself to close the gap.
"Ready when you are."
Julian felt the breath catch in his throat when she moved closer—so near, yet still too far for him. He reached down and took her hand instead, lacing their fingers together.
He let the moment settle, offering her a quiet, steady nod. His hand hovered over the file for a beat longer before finally opening it, the old paper crackling as he turned the first page. The initial contents were clinical—cold descriptions of procedures, magical theory, spells cast and their effects. But in between the lines were details that made Julian’s stomach twist. She had been a child. A child. Not a number.
Manon wasn't shocked by Julian holding her hand. He loved physical touch. It soothed him and Manon was always happy to comply even if she found it hard to initiate. It soothed her too. Not that she let herself think that. She didn't want to rely on it. Couldn't think of another thing being taken away. But it did help. Touching Julian as she read through her past written in black and white.
Manon had never considered herself a child. A burden, a mutant... never a child. She read though it detached. The hand not in Julian's scribbling notes as her eyes scanned the pages. Procedures she had long since forgotten begin to pull at her mind but nothing showed on her face. She would pay for this all later she was sure but right now nothing would really register. She might as well have been reading a novel. Not her whole life laid bare.
The only flicker of emotion to come from Manon was from that hand in Julian's. A slight squeeze, her thumb stroking the back of his hand as she felt his moods shifts while reading something terrible. Her palms becoming sweaty, although she never let go. Things were things she couldn't hide from him or herself as they delved into her file. The life of 117.
That was until a phrase appeared.
Terminator order for 117. By order of the King.
"Julian. I don't want you to read the next bit." It was out of her mouth before she could stop herself. So overwhelmed by her need to not have Julian read the next entries that all of her conditioning failed as she turned white.
"Please." She whispered.
