It’s the voice of a girl, maybe a young adult, hoarse and dry – and she’s in sight, a puddle of a person on the grass rising up, soot-covered. She must’ve been in the house as it was burning. She doesn’t seem to be armed with anything, so for now, he keeps block so Lula doesn’t get it in her head to shoot.
“Hey, do you need a hand?” He’s tentative about offering a hand, just in case she has a knife hidden, but offers it nonetheless. “Looks like you’ve done something to your ankle, there.” He offers a quick smile as he helps her to the car, and nods at Lula, who nods back and fidgets – hopefully putting the shotgun away – before sitting still and watching them both with curious eyes.
“We’ve got something to help clear your lungs in the trunk, just– sit in the back and wait.” He can question her afterwards. Shooting his sister a quick look in the sideview mirror, he’s quick to retrieve the oxygen tank and muzzle.
“OK, just use this as much as you feel you need to, yeah? You’ll be OK. I’ll just stand by here.”
Lula looks tense sitting in the front – the girl might attack from behind. Wouldn’t be the first time.
“My name’s Mac, by the way.” Best to keep talking, keep her calm.
Ashley looks up at the man standing over her, and takes his hand, pulling herself to her feet with a slight hiss of pain. She’d always been a little too trusting, and with things the way they are she isn’t sure if it’s a good thing anymore. He seems harmless enough. “I don’t think it’s broken,” she offers, cautious optimism apparent in her tone despite how awfully dry her voice sounds, though she winces as she tries to put weight on it. Still, she would’ve heard something snap if she’d broken it right?
She lets him guide her, and sits in the backseat, behind a woman who doesn’t look all that happy to see her. Ash nods wordlessly, and shuts her eyes for a brief moment, sighing. You’re fine. You’ll be fine. As the man walks away, though, she starts coughing, and only stops when she’s handed the oxygen. She looks quizzically at the man as she puts the mask to her face, wondering how common it was for people to carry oxygen tanks around with them- not very, if she had to guess.
Trusting this stranger could prove to be a fatal mistake. But then again, trusting the last group she’d been travelling with definitely would’ve been, if she hadn’t made it out of the house.
She inhales deeply, feeling her breathing ease slightly more with each breath. When she’s almost certain she’s not about to start coughing again, and when she’s sure she’ll be able to speak, she pauses, pulling the mask off. “Ashley,” she says quietly, shooting him a small smile. “Thank you.”
Her lungs still sort of hurt, her throat feels like sandpaper, but she’ll be okay. Ashley is a bit amazed with herself, even, for making it out of there mostly intact and without a panic attack- thank God for the latter, hyperventilation might have killed her.
//NOW WHAT: A Mixtape For The End Of The World
//40 Songs for when the world has just ended or is going to. There’s brimstone falling from the sky. There’s probably nukes. Maybe even zombies. But at least there’s music.
THE END: So the apocalypse has just begun. Bummer. Stuff is on fire, people are panicking, and your odds aren’t that great. But surely things can’t get worse? [Listen Here]
THE FALLOUT: Okay the world ended. Problem is that you’re still sort of alive. It can’t get any harder, can it? [Listen Here]
THE SURVIVING: You’ve lived long enough that it’s actually impressive. You’re getting used to life after the end, and even though you miss things like plumbing and the internet, you’re still alive. Whether you choose to settle down or keep on moving is another thing. [Listen Here]
THE REBUILDING: Congratulations! You’ve survived long enough that society might be very slowly approaching something that doesn’t involve roving packs of bandits or swarms of zombies. The Earth will never be the same, but it’s come this far, and so have you. [Listen Here]
Backstage Life: The Wilis, ready to go.

Science is the acceptance of what works and the rejection of what does not. That needs more courage than we might think.
