Hey guys! 

I’m sorry for vanishing so suddenly and for so long, school got crazy busy (I’m literally at school right now on a Saturday afternoon as I type this) and my laptop has officially bitten the dust. 

I’m not sure when I’ll be able to be back properly but I just wanted to give an update!! I still love Ash, she’s just on unwilling hiatus right now.

He wasn’t sure if Ashley would be fine with his putting up the Christmas decorations or not, but he’d rather skip Halloween and go straight to Thanksgiving and then Christmas. If she wanted for him to wait to put up the decorations, he would, but as far as the Christmas tree? That’s going up before she wakes up. 

   He checks the time on his phone, seeing that he should have time. Immediately, he goes to work.

Ash blearily wanders downstairs, still in her pajamas even though she knew she’d have to change into her Halloween costume soon enough- she’d promised Sam and Hannah that they’d all match this year- she’s going to be the Ginny Weasley to their Luna Lovegood and Hermione Granger. 

She freezes when she gets into the living room, seeing the Christmas tree already in its place. 

“Jeez, how long was I asleep?” she grumbles to Matt, who looks way too cheerful for this time of morning. “Did I miss Thanksgiving? ‘Cause I’m gonna be ticked if I missed Thanksgiving.”

                    Digging his heels into the mulch and rocking oh-so-slightly in the swing seat, he grins up at her. Yeah, he imagines that it’s gonna be more than a little nerve-wracking – different city, practical stranger even though they’ve talked online. Yeah, if that’s not a potential Hallmark Movie warning against the internet stranger danger, then what is? So yeah, he gets it.

                    “Well it’s not like I’m a regular customer or anything. Like,” he shrugs and thumbs at the swing’s chains, rolls his eyes, “I don’t have a member’s discount card or whatever. I’m not that loyal.” Jokes! Hope that shit works.

                    “You mean people who know what other kinda people to avoid?” Hand-on-heart, jaw-dropped offended, Ashley! How could you? “You mean your parents would get all flappy if you sat next to the guy who gave you a little tip on wimp-shit drug dealers who perform their business here?” He tuts. “Gosh!” Then a short laugh as he nods at the swings next to him. “Take a seat, anyway. I’ll behave.” … Yeah, hope that doesn’t make her feel any more nervy. Great going, bud.

                    “How lucky is this, though? I didn’t even know you were in this shithole.” One of his favourite people from anywhere in the world and they’re right on his doorstep without even so much as a preemptive howdy-do. He’s not even miffed about it, far from it. “So what’s the haps for that?” he asks, still swinging slowly on the seat and hands tight around the chains. “Like, you decide Vegas is that interesting or is it you and the ‘rents?”

It takes a beat, but then Ashley is laughing. “Well, if you don’t even get a member’s discount, that’s totally different.”

Her heart is beating double-time as she sits on the swing next to him and kicks her feet a little to get going- her feet don’t touch the ground, it’s hard for her to gain any sort of momentum. “If I phrased it as ‘this guy told me that the park I was hanging out in was where all the drug dealers hung out’ then they might be a little concerned. But if I said my friend was looking out for me, well...” she shrugs. 

“Right? I didn’t even think to tell you, I’m sorry. Mom made it sound like I wouldn’t have enough free time to come see you.”  She turns to look at him, the chains on the swing tangling as she does. “It’s about time I confess: I’m actually an outlaw. I’ve been on the lam for years. I came here because I thought it would be the perfect place to hide in plain sight.”

She pulls on the chains, untangling them and sending herself spinning for a dizzying moment. “Kidding. My dad’s here for a work thing. Book publisher’s conference, something like that. My mom and I have been doing the tourist stuff while he works, but then they got invited to this dinner that I didn’t want to go to, so... here I am.”

                    Not that he wants to sound like he’s stolen the words out of a mediocre poet’s mouth, but she looks like personified autumn. It’s something else to see that kinda beauty thing up close than via video calls or shared selfies. He was, initially, more than a little wary, and he wouldn’t be surprised if she was either. At least on her side, her parents aren’t too far away.

                    “You know that drug dealers usually hang ‘round here?” He swirls his finger in a helicopter-blade motion, indicating the otherwise empty park. “Dunno why, because it’s not exactly covert.”

Her father’s work trip had turned into a family trip- he’d had to come to Vegas for a conference, and Mom had some vacation days to use up, so here they were. Or here Ash was, while her parents were off having dinner with Dad’s coworkers, something she’d had to beg them to let her pass on. ‘I’m practically an adult, and I have my cell phone. I won’t go far. Pleeeeease.’

So now, instead of being at a boring dinner at a too-fancy-for-comfort restaurant, she was wandering on her own, avoiding the over-populated touristy areas like the plague. There were just too many people in this city. 

She turns when she hears a voice- there’s something familiar about it that she can’t place until she sees him. Butterflies erupt in her stomach as she smiles. Seeing him in person is so different than over Skype. It’s a little hard to believe he’s real. He’s taller than she expected him to be. 

“Seems suspicious that you know where the drug dealers hang out,” she points out with a teasing grin. “This is exactly why my parents told me not to talk to people on the internet.”  She’s trying to play off how nervous she is, but she isn’t sure it’s working.
