Usually, Johnny was more composed. There was less give on the surface; but he was still human, and thus, not immune to the effects of their atmosphere. Sometimes he hated the way his feelings curled their way into his senses. His heart rate spiked, pumping blood faster, heating him up. That fire always raised to meet his eyes, whether he meant for it to, or not, and some things were too blaringly obvious to mask. Being in a crowd like this, under these lights- Bodies bumping into him, with no real rhyme or rhythm to adjust to. He knew he was about to be overstimulated. A sharp exhale of breath left his nostrils as they flared. Hist chest filled with air, pressing slightly against his back, almost as if he hoped his ribcage could envelope him whole if he just.. took in enough air. His fingers twitched by his side, as he stared back. The problem with being in lit up city streets with bodies, bodies, bodies, everywhere- is that those bodies have eyes, and thoughts, and usually, they don't keep quiet when one drops another dead in the street. Finally, johnny's eyes drop to Echo, the slice of features he can see are lit up, like a Warhol painting, each color highlighting different points of the architecture of his face. For a moment he doesn't even realize Echo's still talking. His head cocks to the side as Echo faced him- the neon spilling over his shoulders, cascading around him in a halo. Echo taunts him, causing one of his brows to tick up slightly. Johnny's jaw clenched momentarily before he leaned his shoulder against the brick, too, mirroring him. "Wanna find out?" He questioned as if it was a dare; a threat.

It's easy to forget about the staring stranger when Johnny's a live wire before him. His breathing doesn't settle, shoulders still holding enough tension to snap most in half. The twitching of his fingers, heat behind his eyes that's not subtle enough to miss. Echo tracks each tell with sharp precision and the city fades into the background for him. Johnny's barely holding it together.

"Mm," it's low and barely audible. Neon fractures across Echo's face as he moves. A hand comes to Johnny's chest, gaze tipped up and searching. "No. I think we should leave. My contact isn't coming and you can't just slaughter someone in the streets." Echo's voice is low, taunting tone gone. He presses to try and back Johnny further into the shadows.

"I know you don't care if they're staring at me. You're just looking for an excuse for bloodshed." Echo says it idly, gaze still sharp and attentive. His gaze falls to the twitch in Johnny's jaw. He wonders vaguely if the other across the street still watches them or if they've sensed the danger they've attracted to themselves. "We've done well staying undetected." Something that almost sounds like praise.

"Don't ruin the streak for something you don't really care about." He likes to think he's gotten a little bit better at keeping Johnny from lashing out. (Some might say at manipulating him--) "Let's just go back to the hotel, okay? Away from the crowds."

The Neon Strip never sleeps. It's always in motion, always something going on. Tonight it's gold and violet flickering lights, spilling out of glass towers. Music bleeds from beneath doors and overlaps in the streets. The clubs thrum in celebration of the upcoming New Year and the crowd moves in waves, a constant exchange of heated glances, synthetic pheromones in the air, and the brush of bodies.

Echo doesn't notice the staring. He stands just along the alleyway's entrance, watching faces as they pass-- looking for his contact. (Where is he?) Johnny's close behind him. He can feel the heat from his chest radiating into his shoulder blades. Johnny's tense like a venomous viper ready to strike at a moments notice. On edge. Then he speaks low from behind Echo.

"I don’t like the way they keep staring at you." 

He glances over his shoulder and up at Johnny's expression, following his gaze to see who he's even talking about. And then his hand settles on Echo's hip, gripping tight enough to leave fingerprint bruises beneath the waistband of his tactical pants.

White brows furrow, glancing back out into the rush of bodies. There's someone across the street-- and... well.. they are staring. The other's gaze lingers on Echo. Something between interest and curiosity. Echo tuts, head turning slightly just to speak over his shoulder at Johnny.

"They're probably spaced out. I doubt they're looking at me." An excuse, maybe. Some truth? Possibly. Echo doesn't recognize them. His eyes meet the others from across the sea of bodies. They stare at one another until Echo looks away first. He turns and leans his opposite shoulder against the brick wall-- facing Johnny now, glacial blues tipped up to him. "What do you care if they stare? Hm? Maybe they see something they like." Tone a touch taunting.

❝Hey, don't flip this around one me, there was no tone- I didn't use a tone!❞ Robert shoots back, maybe kinda.... slightly on the defensive. He fails to see what's so wrong about the statement, and why Echo is so fixated.... No... That's complete bullshit, he has to acknowledge... even as his inner monologue speeds ahead to set the groundwork of a comfortable narrative. One on which they can co-exist peacefully. What he feels right now is far from peaceful... Anxiety, a little shame... Lingering feelings. It can never be simple, can it? He almost answers in the affirmative. Yes, he likes one of them, because he likes all of them... The corporate team-building syngergy bullshit in the handbook is made to smooth over conflicts like these... Killing the problem with boredom, rather than kindness is a brutally effective tactic. ❝Look- we work together and it gets kinda heavy. I admire him, but that's it. We're friends. Just friends.❞ Riiight. Everyone here is juuuuust friends. Echo is right to call bullshit on him.

❝Can we please just-❞ he pauses and pulls Echo by the arm as he notices Echo scrutinizing the group, and finding each person a possible target of his ire. ❝We'll get into this later, okay?❞

"I'm-- What? I'm not attempting to flip this around on you, Robert." And now he takes a tone. One resembling something firm and scolding, the way one might reprimand a petulant teenager. Robert's defensive and it only heightens Echo's suspicion. Glacial blues flicker between Robert's quiet spiraling and the group of friends which have grown louder in his brief absence.

Look- we work together and it gets kinda heavy. I admire him, but that's it. We're friends. Just friends.

Tugged by the arm, Echo complies and moves where he's directed-- where he's pulled. It clicks, though. He realizes Robert does like one of them. There's two men in the group. Robert said him which meant it was one of them. He eyes them both for a moment.

Echo nods, "I understand. We don't have to talk about this." His flash of emotion melts into something quiet and reserved. Controlled. There's no competition for human. Echo knows better. The smallest sliver of hope burns out in that brief moment. He gives a weak smile, "let's join your friends, then. We don't need to keep them waiting."

And now he understands why Robert doesn't feel the same-- why he won't entertain them.

Robert can already anticipate the questions. It's never just one. One question is just the first in the rockslide. And second, he's not even sure what they are. They're not exactly just friends... This, coming from the guy who was content to make do, sleeping in a lawn chair until Echo showed up, but bought a mattress for him to lay on when he's not even entirely sure Echo can feel discomfort like ... conventional humans do. "I have less of a death wish and more of an objective," his voice smooth. Conversational. "You don't earn extra by talking to me, so what do you want?"

The two had been lying together on the bed, side-by-side, facing one another. He has this waking dream of Echo's hand under his shirt and he wonders what effect it would have if he did the same?
