one of reids unique repeated traumas is bones chiming in the wind,- first with rib bones and frank in 'no way out' n then more personal in '300' with the cult and merva and hyoid bones dangling off strings around him.
gideon left after his own bone windchime case got too close to home. dyou think he thought about gideon when he heard that distinct sound again? or about the happy ending he left for?
and about how gideon was killed by a funhouse mirror version of himself - by someone who loved birds and people in wrong ways for wrong reasons, how reid was about to be killed for a distorted version of his own life purpose - the cult wanted to kill him to make him a protector of people which was, ironically, the only way to make it impossible for him to protect his mom and everyone else like he could be able to keep doing unless they killed him.
so. dyou think he thought of all that, when listening to dead peoples bones sing, thinking hed soon join them? join gideon?
So I've been obsessed lately with httyd and got into reading all the fanfics out there and there was something that bothered me; every single fic depicted the red death as a violent monster that gets killed in each fic! And I just wanted something wholesome for her. So, this is long but hear me out!!
Let's make it a world where Hiccup kinda time travelled to the past, like to the moment he caught Toothless in the first movie.
After befriending Toothless again and giving him his ability to fly back, he starts to consider alternatives to do things in a new way than the future, to protect Berk, to protect his father, to never be forced to give up on the dragons and have them go into hiding, and say goodbye to Toothless.
He starts by thinking of killing off the red death first, to free the dragons and end the war.
So he goes to the nest, without Astrid this time, and same as the scene in the movie, the red death is recieving the food the dragons brought and as she raises to eat the gronckle that had spat a tiny fish, Hiccup shoots the stalactites of the cave to save it, that makes the ceiling collapse on the queen dragon while she's open mouthed, while other dragons flee
Hiccup keeps flying around the Collapsed mountain waiting for the red death to come out so he can defeat it, but she never emerges.
So he and Toothless venture inside to look for her, and find her body after searching for a while. He thinks that it really got killed by the collapse and that this is a miracle. Only to have her wake up.
And then the scene goes like this:
The cavern reeked of smoke, charred bones, and something deep and ancient, like the breath of the earth itself. Hiccup stood frozen, a single speck of human insignificance in the massive, molten chamber. His knees wobbled as a gust of hot air blasted from the darkness ahead, rattling his thin frame like a leaf in a storm.
enormous eyes, glowing like molten gold, cracked open.
Hiccup gulped. “Oh... Thor’s left sock.”
The Red Death loomed over him, her body shifting as she rose. Cracked scales, the color of lava-streaked stone, gleamed in the firelight. She was big—no, impossibly big. A mountain with wings. Her cavernous mouth split open in a snarl, exposing fangs the size of houses.
Toothless growled, his body tensed like a drawn bowstring. He stepped in front of Hiccup, wings spread wide, a tiny but fierce shield against a dragon the size of an island.
But the Red Death didn’t strike.
Instead, she stared at him.
A deep, unsettling rumble vibrated through the ground. Hiccup felt it in his ribs, in his teeth, in his very bones.
She was sniffing him.
His heart hammered. This was it. He was about to be eaten—bitten in half like a stale biscuit. Any second now, she’d—
She recoiled. Like she just felt something she hadn't felt ever in her life.
The giant dragon jerked back slightly, her head tilting. A sound escaped her throat—not a roar, not a growl, but something almost... confused. She sniffed again, nostrils flaring. Her wings twitched.
Toothless let out a warning snarl. The Red Death’s gaze flickered to him, then back to Hiccup. She lowered her head closer—too close—and the heat of her breath made Hiccup’s hair stand on end.
“Uh…” Hiccup raised both hands, the universal sign of please don’t eat me, you wouldn't know what to do with all of ....this.
The Red Death… paused.
For the first time, Hiccup noticed the tiredness in her eyes. The way her massive frame shifted as though uncomfortable. The faint groan in her throat—not a growl, but something else.
Something old.
And in that moment, something strange happened.
A pulse, deep and wordless, hummed through Hiccup’s chest. Like standing too close to a dragon’s wings as it took off, but inside him. It wasn’t fear. It wasn’t pain. It was... acknowledgment.
Does The Red Death telepathy reache humans?
The Red Death let out a long, slow breath, her massive shoulders slumping slightly. The fire in her chest dimmed, embers instead of an inferno.
Hiccup’s mouth went dry. She wasn’t going to kill him.
He exhaled shakily. “Okay. Well, uh… that’s new.”
Toothless grumbled, giving Hiccup a sharp look, as if to say, What are you doing, you tiny reckless idiot? She’s literally a natural disaster with teeth.
Hiccup, against all logical thought, stepped forward.
The Red Death’s pupils constricted, focusing on him sharply.
“Easy,” Hiccup murmured, lifting a hand. “You’re not… bad, are you?”
The giant dragon huffed. A gust of wind nearly knocked him over, but he swore it wasn’t aggressive—it felt almost tired.
Hiccup frowned. His mind spun. “You’re hungry.”
Toothless snorted. Obviously.
“No, I mean really hungry,” Hiccup insisted, eyes narrowing. He looked around—the bones, the scraps, the lingering scent of burnt everything. Dragons had been feeding her for who knows how long. But why? Why did she keep eating, devouring even her own kind?
He turned back to the Red Death, whose massive gaze had not left him.
“You don’t even know what you’re supposed to eat, do you?”
A deep, irritated growl rumbled from her throat.
Hiccup hesitated, dots connected in his brain, The Red Death confusion, like she's feeling something new, the scene of moments ago replaying in his mind. The huge dragon rising mouth wide open while rocks rained down from the collapsing cave.
He reached down. He grabbed a rock from the cavern floor—just an ordinary hunk of cooled lava—and hesitated.
Then, slowly, he tossed it toward her.
The Red Death’s pupils widened.
For a long, tense moment, she did nothing. Then, with an almost reluctant movement, she snapped it up.
The crunch of stone echoed through the cavern.
Hiccup held his breath. Toothless held his breath. The entire world seemed to hold its breath.
And then…
The Red Death rumbled.
Not a growl. Not a roar. Something deeper.
A pleased sound.
Hiccup gawked. “Oh, you have got to be kidding me.”
Toothless screeched.
The Red Death ate rocks.
Hiccup turned slowly back to her, his expression somewhere between hysterical laughter and absolute disbelief. “You mean to tell me… that if we had just thrown some rocks at you, this entire war wouldn’t have happened?!”
The Red Death made a low, grumpy sound.
Hiccup ran a hand down his face. “Oh, this must be some kind of a universal joke.”
Toothless smacked him with his tail.
Then, before Hiccup could fully process what was happening, the Red Death lowered her head. Closer. Closer still. Until her forehead nearly touched him.
Hiccup went still.
Something unspoken passed between them.
The weight in his chest—that feeling—grew stronger.
And suddenly, it clicked.
She wasn’t looking at him like prey.
She wasn’t looking at him like a threat.
She was looking at him like…
An heir.
Hiccup barely had time to open his mouth before Toothless body-slammed him.
The Night Fury let out a furious series of grumbles, nudging Hiccup away from the massive dragon with a very clear absolutely not, you tiny idiot, do NOT adopt the giant murder monster. Or get adopted by it.
Hiccup really doesn't know where this is going but it's his life right now, he has to figure it out eventually.

Viggo, does Hiccup not get a fish?
Also, maan, can you imagine if Toothless did the thing with that alleged poisoned fish and Hiccup ate it in front of Viggo lol.
Yeah I couldn't stop thinking about this

I know it's the wrong timeline, but imagine if in the lycanwing episode, they had gone to Viggo for help out of sheer desperation.
If Tuffnut doesn't accept any of their help, it's time to get more drastic. None of them can figure out what dragon caused that bite mark, but you know who might? An expert dragon hunter. So, Hiccup goes to Viggo, he lays out the deal and says they need help with a dragon they can't identify, and in exchange they might be willing to leave some of the hunters' ships alone for a while. Viggo, intrigued (and flattered Hiccup is recognizing his expertise) agrees, and goes back with them to the edge.
They go to the stables, where Tuffnut is locked in a cell. Tuffnut, being Tuffnut, sees Viggo and immediately starts wailing that they've SOLD HIM to the DRAGON HUNTERS, how COULD THEY, they're going to HAND HIM OVER to VIGGO. Hiccup tells him to just stick out his arm.
Tuffnut: FINE, i'll show him, and then you will all believe!!! he will prove the truth you are too blind to see! HERE IT IS
Viggo: oh, that's a canine bite
Tuffnut, Hiccup & Fishlegs:
Viggo: you can tell by the u-shaped pattern and the circular marks of the canine teeth next to the smaller imprints of the molars. i'd say it was a wolf, most likely.
Hiccup:
Viggo:
Hiccup:
Tuffnut: now that you mention it. it was large and furry and walked on four legs. it didn't have any wings either. i always thought that was strange for a dragon, haha!
Tuffnut: it would also explain the howling.
Hiccup:
Hiccup: are you fucking serious
It happened spontaneously, but I love AU. So… Avatar Hiccup. Hiccup considered himself an ordinary person before meeting Toothless. (Dragons can be equated to spirits, i mean relationships between people and them). Then he discovered his talent as an airbender and Toothless became his teacher. Later, other talents were discovered, which made it clear that Hiccup was an avatar.
Astrid became his waterbender teacher. Snotlout was an adept of firebender, but he sincerely did not understand how to teach, because he himself used magic on a subconscious level. Fishlegs is an earthbender, but he did not go beyond the amateur level and could not become a teacher. The twins are always on their own wave. Ruffnut is a master in airbending and can perform techniques with clouds of gas, while Tuffnut is not a master, but is ready to set fire to the gas with his sparks at any moment. The twins always come in a set.
Brothers Grimborn! Lord of Fire Viggo. The aesthetics of blue flame and lightning were created for him. So I couldn't resist. The hottest flame and deadly techniques of lightningbending made him the most terrible opponent for the young avatar, but in the future, he will become the teacher of fire magic for Hiccup. I endowed Riker with explosion magic, as for me, it suits him perfectly. An explosive mixture of rage and bloodlust.
Berserkers! Remembering Viggo's words about how the berserkers in ancient times lured the Skrills with metal, I thought about a tribe practicing metalbending. Dagur discovered his talent for earth magic much later, including metal. I like to think that Dagur could be a threat to the avatar even as an ordinary person, relying on his ingenuity and physical strength. Heather is a master of earth and metal magic, she could well become Hiccup's teacher in this matter.
@give-to-oblivion: Are these movies having a metatextual argument with the James Bond franchise about spy fiction? I feel like if they are Ethan's chances of survival go up and retirement becomes the more satisfying ending.
oh good gd yes. i remember when i was in the thick of MI Deep Think, i tried to watch Skyfall bc yanno it's supposed to be the Best Bond Movie and I fucking stopped watching because I couldn't fucking stand it.
like, in Dead Reckoning, Ethan literally says the thesis out loud (Ethan: Your life will always matter more to me than my own. Grace: You don't even know me. Ethan: What difference does that make?) but it's woven into all of the movies McQ has touched (so Ghost Protocol onward). like just the MAJOR examples here:
in Rogue Nation, the big bad hooks Ethan by killing a bystander in front of him, which gets Ethan to basically go MIA and chase the Big Bad for six fucking months.
AND LATER IN THE SAME MOVIE, Big Bad (Solomon Lane, great name) kidnaps Benji
so Ethan proceeds to abduct the British Prime Minister to get the MacGuffin Lane wants so he can get Benji back
the entire point of Fallout is that Ethan is so incapable of accepting collateral damage, he lets terrorists get ahold of nuclear material instead of losing one person.
Which is then compounded in the scene where he nearly blows the entire mission bc one person catches them. And instead of shooting her or knocking her out, he pleads with her to walk away.
while James Bond is gritty and pessimistic and misogynistic, MI is about a group of people who become so dedicated to the preservation of life, they reject the Trolley Problem and will do anything to push the thing off the tracks. even if they fail in the end, it's better than the idea of Acceptable Losses. no loss is acceptable.
uuuuuugh this last movie is gonna fuck me up.......
Yes this, this exactly is why Ethan hunt is better than Bond and the moment that always encapsulates it for me is in fallout when they are trapped, Benji has the plutonium and they need a way out. Ethan says ‘get the car, Benji’ and Benji does the very bond thing of driving the car to them using his phone.
Benji doesn’t park it between them - he swings it round in front of Ethan, opens the doors, and then throws Ethan the plutonium, intending him to escape.
And you see Ethan glance at the car, and the open escape route and he can see it, he could get away. But then he glances back at Benji, back at the gunfire and you can see him think ‘I didn’t mean just me’
Bond would have run, Luther and Benji would have died and he would have felt all sorry and guilty about it and had a drink and hit a bad guy very hard
Ethan would just never abandon anyone for the sake of mission.
You get it.
BC the big reveal in Dead Reckoning is that the IMF has never truly returned after the double tap of GP and RN, but Ethan has basically remade it in his image, into a group that truly could not care less about the US and is dedicated to this specific brand of radical altruism.
my favorite thing about ethan hunt is that he's a "real" character. probably not the best term but real in the sense that if my government job accused me of killing my team / found family i'd also go a bit postal trying to find who really did. if a terrorist strapped a bomb to my best friend i'd also give him fifty million bucks to let him go. if someone held my wife hostage and made me go halfway around the world to steal a life threatening virus you bet i'd be on that plane. maybe i wouldn't be as successful as ethan, nor would i handle it as well, but he's a dude who loves his friends and family and would do anything for them, and that's why he's relatable. his stunts aren't just for show they're motivated by love.
Ethan Hunt x Hope Poem by @mumblesplash
IF I DO NOT SURVIVE
THANK YOU
FOR CREATING ME
(more entity's dadmin/creator benji. inspired by person of interest)
i am once again rotating in my mind the image of ethan frantically pacing back and forth while they try to get the rest of the team trapped underground in the doomsday vault out after they capture the entity….. ohh the panic the restless energy the exhaustion staved off just a little longer by the worry. and then they finally make radio contact or whatever and by some miracle the voices of each member of the team declare themselves one by one… except benji . so of course ethan goes where’s benji and there’s a pause for a long, agonizing moment before they tell him he’s here but he’s not doing well, and the rescuers tell them we’re gonna need a little bit longer, and they say okay, but hurry if you can, and ethan’s this close to tearing his hair out because he did it, they did it, they stopped the end of the world and it wouldn’t be fair, then, would it, for benji to die now. ouuhhhh he’d dig until his hands were raw if he had to to get them out
idk i just like villain benji too much
the ai father or whatever
