tom and b’elanna’s relationship is like watching a train crash after years of stripped down rail safety regulations in terms of being awful and inevitable yet kind of fascinating in its awfulness and inevitability. like, tom is insecure in his masculinity so of course he’s going to chase after a woman who resists his advances in order to validate his manliness. he’s also flighty and emotionally immature so of course he’s going to go for someone he (racistly) sees as being in need of less emotional support. b’elanna is so deeply lonely, insecure, and full of self-hatred that of course she’ll eventually relent to someone who pushes her enough. of course she’s not going to leave him when he treats her like an afterthought because that’s the best she thinks she deserves. because who else could possibly love someone like her. not helped by the way that tom’s always making little jokes about how klingon b’elanna is, which he probably doesn’t mean in a “you’re lucky i put up with you” kind of way but it does seem, especially in the last season, that that’s how b’elanna interprets it.

yet both of them are so stubborn and terrified of being alone and desperate to be “normal” that of course they’re going to stick together even when it’s clear things aren’t working great. b’elanna tells tom time and time again that she wants him to be more emotionally invested in their relationship, in her as a person, and he always says he’ll change and then never does. tom knows that all he needs is a few sweet words and a big romantic gesture and b’elanna will stay, meaning he never needs to put any effort into the day to day stuff that actually matters. b’elanna never follows through on leaving because she’s scared that ending a longterm relationship will mean she’s just like her mother.

in that way it’s very much the typical stunted hetero dynamic, the kind you see tons of women either trapped in or talking with relief about having escaped. the kind where the man talks about the breakup as having happened out of the blue because in his mind things were going great. because for him things were going great due to how little effort he had to put in so things simmer until they reach their breaking point. and due to b’elanna being the way she is i think that breaking point will come a lot later than for most

I’ve been watching Star Trek: Voyager for the first time. Tried to imagine what Seven of Nine might look like if she was allowed to choose what she wanted to look like and retain some of her Borg identity, rather than being strapped into a catsuit and four inch heels to improve ratings.

EVERY fucking stupid liberals university in the star trek future their fucking student sketch comedy group OF COURSE has at least one Vulcan and it's like their thing where they're like "haha I bet you wouldn't expect a VULCAN in an IMPROV group!!!!!" as if this hasn't become such a fucking tired cliche like literally since 2063 every fucking comedy show has the token Vulcan to be the straight man. you're doing nothing. call me when you guys make an effort to actually include tellarites in the writing room instead of confining them to punch lines. and to be honest with you guys your Vulcan isn't even that good. his performance was highly derivative of T'min's work in the big bang theory 3 (the third big bang yheory. they make a lot of sitcom sequels in the future)
