Lina absolutely loved the atmosphere of New York, it was the most at home she’d felt in her entire life. Arriving there had felt like finally finding a perfect fit, something she’d been searching for her entire life. Three years in and she was still starry eyed, it was obvious that Maddie didn’t feel the same way. How they’d wound up at a bar together, Lina didn’t really know, but she was trying to make the best of their time spent together off the clock without completely embarrassing herself. “Do you smoke cigars?” she asked, titling her head to blow smoke in the opposite direction of her boss, “You think everything I do is to manipulate a bigger bonus, when really I just don’t have very expensive taste.”
Looking over her shoulder as Carolina spoke, Maddie sneered at the dirty brick wall; in a perfect world, she’d be leaning against it, but she was wearing her favourite blazer, which matched perfectly with her favourite pants. But she was tired, her four a.m. rock climbing session at the Breckenridge & Co. basement gym catching up to her now -- she checked her elegant wristwatch -- at eleven p.m. Maddie really was more of a morning person, but it was a Friday, and her life wasn’t entirely about work and fitness. She could also... drink. With her assistant. Texting Carolina thirty minutes ago was admittedly a last ditch effort not to be alone; Rooney was busy studying, the over achieving little asshole, and Andy hadn’t texted her back, maybe getting some beauty sleep. Carolina was dispensable to every other area of Maddie’s life, so why not the social?
“Give me your jacket,” Maddie said, already shrugging out of her blazer. Now that she was meeting her own needs, she responded to Carolina’s little curiosity. “No. My body is a temple. The only smoking I do is the people kind. Assholes, shitty employees, old men who think they know more than me...” She heaved a sigh, folding the blazer over her arm. She’d give it to Carolina before they left tonight to be dry cleaned. “Well, that’s a flaw to your character. You need to start thinking bigger. Have you ever thought of investing in a Birkin bag?”
