I think at any time you want, I’ve seen people that place the Christmas tree in August, no kidding. Very Christmas-y spirited people they are.

I've already started playing Christmas carols in the house, though I don't think my roommate likes it very much. But there's still Thanksgiving to plan for... Gosh, I love this time of year! Alex rubbed his eyes tiredly as he nodded to acknowledge her words of gratitude. “No problem.” He glanced at the bag she dropped but kept his own briefcase over his shoulder. “Stairs after a long day, that is torturous,” he replied with a smile to appear more amiable. He felt so bad that he couldn’t remember her name. “Please don’t remember mine,” he repeated in his head. His plead was obviously not heard, since she said his name loud and clear. He laughed awkwardly as he said, “Yup, that’s me. Got it fixed the next morning, thankfully.” He cleared his throat. “I’m sorry, what was your name again?”

His attention returned to the elevator that was no longer humming its usual tune. He looked at the glowing button to his floor in confusion. It was clearly not his floor and yet it appeared to have stopped moving. “What the he—?” he caught himself mid-word, cursing his tired mind to ‘get it together’. “What the heck?” he corrected himself. He sighed and hoped that whoever was in charge of maintaining the elevators was as quick as the workers at his workplace. He checked his wristwatch; 8:48, it read. “I guess we should wait a few minutes before calling. The elevator may start working again…”

The lights in the closed space remained lit, so he wasn’t starting to panic like he had once done during his first year in college. The dorm elevator had broken down, and he had been stuck with another dormmate who lived on his floor, in the dark. He gave a sigh, mostly to push the memory far from his mind and to relieve any tensed muscles.

"It is, isn't it? I've had to climb the stairs so many times, it's crazy... I don't know how people do it." Maddy sighed, shaking her head as she leaned against the railing, letting herself relax for the first time in a long while. Honestly, how did people have the energy to climb up stairs or do anything after a full day's worth of work? Honestly, all she wanted to do was turn on the TV, relax, eat some dinner and go to bed. The girl was usually so full of energy and life, but today just wasn't one of those days. However, her aches and pains couldn't stop Maddy from being cheerful. That was simply ingrained her, no matter how stressed or tired she was. She didn't care that she didn't remember her name, she was just excited for the opportunity to make a new friend. A wide, beaming smile forming on her face, she offered her hand for a handshake as she exclaimed, "Oh, I'm Maddy! It's Madeleine, actually, but that sounds super contrived and boring and so not me, so I prefer Maddy. Nice to meet you again, Alex!"

It was only after her spiel that Maddy realized that the elevator had stopped moving. Usually, when the elevator was in motion, one could feel it move under their feet, pushing them up towards their floor. This time, the elevator wasn't moving at all... And Maddy couldn't help but feel slightly terrified. She needed to take a shower! She needed to eat her dinner! She needed to call her mom and tell her good night! How the heck was she going to do that when she was stuck inside an elevator? Sure, Alex seemed like a nice guy, but at the same time, Maddy did not want to be stuck inside of an elevator with him. It wasn't exactly her idea of fun.

"Are you sure? Shouldn't we... Shouldn't we call for help or something?" Maddy asked nervously, biting her lip as she stared at the control panel. Honestly, the girl didn't know what to do. Sure, she wanted to be a nurse, so she was trained to be calm and collected in situations like these, but still... She was also trained to ask for her help when she needed it. Shouldn't they be doing that? "Better safe than sorry, right? It's not that I don't like you or anything, it's just that... You know, being stuck in my elevator isn't exactly the funnest thing to do on a Thursday night, y'know?"

Anderson’s nose scrunched up again and he shook his head at her first idea. “Nah, Tootsie Pops are kind of gross. I mean, you get those all the time when you’re trick or treating! But Ring Pops… that would definitely set you apart from everyone else giving out candy. And then, a bag of chocolate-something, just for a different taste.” As he laid out this plan, Anderson grabbed one of the assorted chocolate bags and some Sour Patch Kids, as to not copy her candy choices outright.

"Nevertheless, I’m sure whatever you get will be appreciated. After all, it’s candy." He said with an indifferent shrug of the shoulders. He smiled briefly, and held a free hand out to her. "I’m Anderson, nice to meet you. And, glad to help with the candy situation."

"Really? You think so? I mean, Tootsie Pops aren't bad... It was always fun to get to the center!" Maddy replied, placing the Tootsie Pop bag back on the display. Maybe she was a weird kid... She loved all kinds of lollipops, even the cheap ones they had in little dishes at the hospital where her father worked. Honestly, licking them and getting to the clean white stick gave her so much joy. Ring Pops, however, were so much more fun. After licking off all that candy, you could wear the ring on your finger! It was like candy and jewellery in one. Picking up the bag of Ring Pops, she threw that into her basket and added, "Okay, I think I'll get the Ring Pops and a bag of, um... Twix! Twix are the best, right? I love the cookie part, it adds a really nice texture."

Nodding her head once, she grinned and replied with, "Uh huh, candy is candy. But... Some candies are better than others. I always hated it when I got candy corn in my bag, especially if they just threw it in there... It was so gross. Who wants to eat candy corn that's been sitting at the bottom of a dirty bag, right?" Then, she smiled and took his hand in hers, shaking it three times before adding, "It's nice to meet you, Anderson. I'm Maddy, and thank you for helping me out with my candy situation! It's nice to know that people are just as euthusiastic about candy as I am."

eat, drink, and be scary | tennessee & maddy

"Remind me, why exactly am I here again?" Tennessee wondered aloud sarcastically, surveying the room full of masked strangers in various costumes. He had to admit, Maddy had done more than a decent job at coming up with theirs—it was actually fucking genius, them going as Booker DeWitt and Elizabeth from BioShock Infinite. Way better than dressing up in spandex, he thought, inwardly snickering at some random guy wearing the whole Spiderman getup (how would he, like, take a piss in that costume?).

However, that didn’t mean he was any less irritated at their current situation. Maddy had somehow managed to drag him all the way down to Clarendon Ballroom to attend the Halloween masquerade ball. The boy could understand her excitement—she was eighteen, living on her own for the first time and ready to take in everything the world had to offer (upon hearing his thoughts, one would imagine him to be anything but a jaded old man). Of course Maddy, with her bubbly personality and boundless enthusiasm, would jump at the very opportunity to dress up and dance and socialize. Which brought him to the main point in his inner discussion on why this evening was going to suck balls—socializing. Tennessee Archer wasn’t friendly. His default expression was that of disinterest, if not annoyance. He didn’t possess the talent to smile and carry on the conversation—not because he was shy, but he simply didn’t care enough to offer verbal responses, his eyebrows being the most expressive features on his face with their up-and-down motions. Rarely did he let a genuinely happy smile adorn his lips.

The brown-haired girl was sincerely trying to get him to enjoy this, though ("cheer up, there’s punch!" "oh, I hope it’s at least spiked"), and Tennessee wasn’t so heartless and selfish as to ruin this party by grumbling all night long. After a final roll of his eyes behind his black Zorro mask (the first and the cheapest thing he had found at the costume shop), the blond turned to his friend. “D’you think they’re gon’ check IDs?” he asked abruptly, referring to the numerous waiters with champagne glasses perched on top of their trays.

"Well, because it's a charity ball... And don't you think it would be a good idea to help out the community food shelf? I actually think it's a really nice idea." Maddy replied with a wide grin and a shrug, taking a sip of the dark red punch from her cup as she tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear. It was truly amazing how many people had come out and dressed up for this Halloween charity ball. Did all of these people really live in Alexandria? Maybe it was because of the masks, but Maddy didn't recognize a single face! Placing her cup on one of the tall tables next to her, she added, "Besides, this is going to be so much fun! There's dancing, and there's food, and we get to wear these super cool masks! We might even win best costume!" 

It had been a real struggle for her to get Tennessee to be her date for the ball. Honestly, it was a struggle to get Tennessee to go anywhere. If it had been up to him, he would have stayed at home and played Bioshock Infinite or one of the other video games he liked all night long. However, after some coaxing and pleading, she had managed to get him to get off the couch, into his Booker DeWitt costume and to the Clarendon Ballroom, and she was absolutely determined to show him that he could have a fun time at the ball. So far, it had been going pretty well. Maddy had never been to a charity ball before - or any ball, really, unless her high school prom counted - and, seeing as she was a newcomer to it all, everything kind of amazed her. There was a very large dance floor and waiters with bow ties and some really, really amazing 'Blood Punch'. It was probably just Hawaiian Punch, but the little ice cubes shaped like miniature bats made it extra special. Lots of people were dressed in costume too, and she had seen everybody from Spiderman to Sailor Moon to Cinderella. 

The only thing was that Tennessee still didn't look like he was having much fun. What could she do to make that boy smile? 

Looking up at Tennessee and back at the waiters with their trays of champagne, she adjusted the hem of her blue skirt, shrugging her shoulders as she replied with, "Maybe? I know they that check IDs at the bar, but I don't know if the waiters will check your ID... They're probably too busy..." Then, picking up her cup of punch, she took another large sip and then added, "But, if they do card you, you can get some punch instead! It's really, really good."

"I’d say get them all.” Margot replied to the stranger. With a cart full of candy Margot was unable to say no to whatever sweet she saw. For once, she was going to have the best haunted house on the block. Last year, she had failed to get the appropriate selection of candy. Actually no, Chris and Aaron had told her diabetes was at an all-time high with younger children. So, instead Margot had dressed up like La Llorona. Passing vegetables to children who won them by dancing to thriller. This year, however, she was going to decorate the garage to look like a Mummy’s Tomb and the backyard was going to look like a graveyard. And now, with the variations of candy and her amazing Cleopatra (well zombie Cleopatra) costume, Margot was set to have fun and not let silly thoughts get her down.

After all, Halloween was her favorite holiday. Even before Christmas and Día De los Muertos, Halloween held a special place in her heart.

Being a bit of an odd ball as a child, she always got a kick out of the Holiday. Her mother would decorate the house — wherever they were living at the time — from head to toe, and would tell visitors scary stories and legends she’d read in books or heard from old family members and friends. While her father would pop out of the bushes and scare the teenagers who jokingly attempted knocked on their door at three in the morning; hearing rumors that their house was haunted. She enjoyed Halloween in the same way Lydia Deetz from Beetlejuice did — because it gave her the chance to be her strangely morbid self without being seen as strange. 

Standing with her cart on hand and her pajamas on, Margot smiled at the younger woman fondly.  ”Then share with the world. Or rather, share with the little gremlins who are going to visit you in the wee hours of the night dressed as ghosts, goblins, and princesses.” Margot randomly placed a bag of twizzlers minis into her cart. “Whatever’s left, you could use for a netflix or movie day?” The dark haired female scanned the candy isle like a scientist would analyze an experiment. Eyes squinted, index finger pushing her glasses up.

"In truth, as long as you’re not giving out veggies or cheap candy, you’ll be alright." She went quiet once she realized she’d been talking too much. Gosh Margot, why the frack do you do that?!

"Get them all?" Maddy asked, tilting her head to the side with a confused expression on her face. Sure, it would solve her dilemma - she wouldn't have to choose which bag of candy she needed to buy - but it seemed a little bit excessive. What if the kids living in her neighborhood didn't like to trick-or-treat? What if they didn't like the candy she brought out? As a child, she would always go to the houses with the 'good' candy like Snickers and miniature candy bars and lollipops as big as her face and skip the ones with the 'bad' candy like sickly sweet candy corn and homemade, 'healthy' candy - were kids in Alexandria like that too? "Goodness, I don't think I have space to store all that candy!"  

Back home in Danville, Halloween was a pretty big deal. There was a Halloween parade on the weekend, where all the little kids got dressed up in all sorts of get-ups, and a big party with costume competitions at the local country club. Everybody in town became crazy with Halloween decorations. They had blow-up displays in their backyards, created miniature haunted houses in their yards and even gave out vanilla ice cream cones - tinted red to look like blood, of course. Maddy absolutely loved it. Sure, it was a little bit terrifying and she would get a little bit scared, but with her older brother, Zach, by her side, Maddy knew that she would be safe from anything.

Besides, her heavy bag of delicious candy more than made up for her fear.

"Well, of course! That was what I was planning to do!" Maddy exclaimed, picking up a bag of Sour Patch Kid Zombies and throwing it into her basket. Turning to face the woman, she added, "It's going to be my first year handing out candy, actually... Should I still get dressed up?" Her mother would always dress up as a witch to pass out candy - she would wear a witch's hat and a long black dress - and Maddy thought that she should dress up to. Would that be too tacky for Alexandria? She wasn't quite sure. "And, well, of course! What's movie night with lots and lots of candy!"

"Well, of course not." Maddy replied, chuckling as she threw a bag of Tootsie Pops into the cart and proceeded to examine a bag of Hershey's assorted minis. A grin forming on her face, she jokingly added, "I'm still a kid at heart - I know the good candy from the bad, and the last thing I'd want on Halloween is a butternut squash."

Anderson had been tasked by his mom to pick up some candy to be handing out, since apparently somebody had taken to eating the bag they had already gotten. Anderson had had a few pieces, yes, but he didn’t finish it off. 

He loved Halloween, and it also gave him a reason to get out of bed for once, so he’d done it without too much complaining. Now he wasn’t sure what they should be getting — before, it was the random assortment of candy bars, and it would make sense to get it again. But the others looked delicious, as well.

Apparently the girl next to him was experiencing the same problems, and he glanced at the candies she referenced as she said them, involuntarily scrunching his nose a bit at Tootsie Pops. 

"Well, the question is, how much of it will be going to kids and how much of it are you gonna eat? I think the best way is to get something you’re not too crazy about, so you won’t eat all of it before Halloween. That’s the logical way, in any case.”

"Hm, that does sound smart..." Maddy replied, biting her lip as she looked down at the candy display, biting her lip as she picked up an assorted bag of Hershey's chocolate before throwing it back into the pile. Of course, she didn't want to eat all the candy - she had to save some for the kids - but, at the end of the day, she would eat some of the candy. After all, she was a kid at heart, and she had the sweet tooth to match. "Maybe I should get the Tootsie Pops then... I mean, I don't like them that much... But kids don't really like Tootsie Pops! I should get Ring Pops... Kids like Ring Pops, right? And anyways, it's hard to eat lots and lots of ring pops in one sitting, right? Takes a lot of time to suck on 'em..."

Really, this wasn't much of a dilemma. Technically, candy wasn't too expensive - she could have bought five packages of candy and still have a lot leftover - but, of course, she didn't want to waste all her money on candy. Maddy was a college kid, and though her parents were supporting her, money was still kind of tight. Plus, she still needed to get a Halloween costume. That had to be her first priority. There was supposed to be a Halloween masquerade in town, and she definitely needed to get a mask for that if she wanted to attend that.

Anyways, I'm sorry that I haven't gotten anything up yet! I'm going to quickly reply to Anderson and try to get a masquerade para up at some point today/tonight. If you want to plot, I would love to have some new plots going for Maddy! So, you know, drop by my askbox.

This week has been absolutely crazy with all the tests and quizzes and homework assignments, but I promise that I'll have a starter for the event written either today or tomorrow! And I'll reply to starters tonight too! I also have to figure out what Halloween costume I'm going to wear tomorrow (yes, I haven't decided that yet) and try to not fall sleep asleep during band rehearsal. So, yup! I'm still here, promise! 

Also, I feel like Maddy's going to take the masquerade as a great opportunity to bring out one of her really fluffy prom dresses because she's just that kind of girl. And she's going to wear rollerskates because that seems like something Maddy would totally do, 'ya know.

I'm also thinking of bringing in another character, but I'm afraid that the FC I have in mind for her is a little too young... Plus, I don't have any time. Sigh.

"S’called bein’ realistic. I haven’t played Mario Kart in a while… ‘Course he ain’t dead, he’s a robot. He’s a good guy, actually, but ya got a real long way to go to get ‘tuh that part’a the plot. Just follow the girl.”

"Oh, absolutely. They ride horses ‘round town, y’know, wrangling up cattle, and go drinkin’ in local saloons… Texas is exactly like what ya see on those Western shows an’ movies, they’re accurate to a T.”

"Well... There are times where you have to be realistic, and the are times where you need to be optimistic. Always look on the bright side of life! Monty Python, y'know? Oh, okay, he's a robot so he can't die... I'll keep that in mind. He's a good guy? And I had to shoot him? Why? That's kind of useless, don't you think? But, okay, okay, so I follow the girl... And then what do I do?"

"I was just joking with 'ya, Tenny. 'Cause if that was true, then California is filled with surfers and dumb Valley girls and spoiled brats, just like those reality TV shows... And, obviously, that's not true. There's more to California than the Kardashians. I'm not that dumb."

"This is, like, the beginning. But y’know, whatever helps ya sleep at night. Doesn’t Mario Kart use the same controller? Just follow the girl down that way. An’ get ready ‘tuh shoot, there’s gon’ be a huge-ass bird robot thing tearin’ the wall apart, any second now… and there it is. C’mon, shoot! It’ll j’st fly away in a second.”

"You don’t gotta tell me if you don’t wanna. I don’t give two shits ‘bout what she does; I don’t even know her. Well, California sounds just like Texas.”

"Stop being so negative, Tenny! You've got to focus on the positive stuff, y'know. And, well... You kind of just turn the wheel around and you just stay on the course, that's all. It's easy. You don't have to press so many buttons... And they tell you to press' em on the screen if you need to anyways. What? I have to... Why do I have to... Okay, okay, I've shot him, I've shot him! Is he dead yet? I don't want to look..."  

"Yeah, they seem pretty similar, I guess... Except in Texas, you have cowboys instead of surfers and skaters, right? I've never been though, so I don't know what it's like down there... What was Texas like?"

"No, you haven’t. That might have’ta do with the tiny fact that you can’t die in BioShock. Well, at least I wasn’t confused by the buttons. Just hold on ‘til Booker gives her the key… Okay, Elizabeth’s gon’ lead ya outta here, you gotta follow her to the exit before the tower starts ‘tuh collap—oh, shit. You better run.”

"Huh. Sounds kinda shady if ya ask me… Danville? Is that where you’re from?"

"Well, okay... Still. It's still something to be proud of! I've gotten this far, right? And, well, there are so many buttons on this thing, it's kind of crazy... It's kind of hard to know which one to press! Alright, okay, so I follow Elizabeth and then I... Okay, okay, I'm running, I'm running! Ohmygosh, where am I supposed to go? This is scary!"

"It's not really shady... She just does some... Interesting things, that's all. It's not like what she's doing is illegal or anything like that. And, yeah, it's where I'm from! It's up near San Francisco, but a little more in-land, so it was hotter and drier... It's nice. It's pretty. The people were nice. Kind of like here, I guess, but... I dun'no, California was different. You could get better Mexican food and it wasn't cold."

"Huh. Maybe you j’st suck major balls at first-person shooter games, then. You’re s’posed ‘tuh press that button, s’gonna take you to the observation rooms. That’s where ‘Lizabeth is. She can’t see ya fr’m the other side of the window thing, though… You gotta follow her to the library."

"How come she’s ‘never home’? She busy? I reckon you ought’a go visit y’r folks in, like, winter break or somethin’. Text me the details like rent ‘n’ stuff, yeah?"

"I don't think I suck that bad! I mean... I haven't died yet, right? Plus, this is my first first-person shooter game... I don't usually play video games like this. Were you really good when you first started playing? Okay, I press this button, and... Ah, okay, I see what's going on now! So, I just follow her into the library now, right? And then what? What do I do after that?" 

"Well, I guess. She's busy with her classes and all that stuff, and... She does stuff in LA sometimes, so she goes down there quite a bit. Yeah, uh, super important stuff, y'know. Really important stuff. I don't know what kind of stuff, though. She doesn't tell me. I'll probably go down to California for Christmas and maybe Thanksgiving... But, I've never been so far away from my family before for such a long period of time, so it's been hard. We were always super close. Alexandria's great, but... It's not like Danville. It's... Different. And yeah, yeah, I'll totally do that, don't worry!"

"What isn’t hard f’r you? Tetris? Pong? You’ll get used to it… eventually. Maybe. Walk over there an’ drink that infusion potion, and—there, go into the elevator. You’re almost there.”

"Whoa, okay, hold y’r freakin’ horses, ‘m probably gon’ need like a week or somethin’ to sort out stuff… But you really don’t mind me movin’ in, do ya?"

"Well, I'm good at Candy Crush and Flappy Bird... Oh, and I'm good at Mario Kart! Really good! I'm not bad at everything. It's just that this game is... Hard. Okay, the infusion potion... Done... And I go into this elevator? Okay, um... So, do I just kind of stand around in this elevator and wait until the doors open or something? Is something supposed to happen?" 

"Yeah, I don't mind! I mean, living in this apartment... It gets kind of lonely, 'specially since Lori's never home. I mean, my family, they're all in California, and I'm here., all by myself.. So, it would be nice to have another roommate, yeah! Plus, the rent would be cheaper too!"

If there was one thing that Maddy didn't like about Halloween, it was that she always bought way too much candy for her own good.

Though Halloween wasn't exactly Maddy's favorite holiday - her favorite holiday was always going to be Christmas - she really did get excited for Halloween. Being a kid at heart, Halloween was kind of her thing - she loved dressing up and she loved candy. This year, it was an even bigger deal for her - it was her first Halloween away from home, and for the first time, she was going to be giving out candy to kids on the eve of the 31st. For some strange reason, she was actually kind of excited about it. While other kids her age would probably not give a damn about the trick-or-treaters, she actually wanted to decorate her apartment with spooky things and give candy out to kids. It was something that she had been wanting to do since she was a kid. 

That's why she was standing in front of a Halloween candy display in the supermarket, debating over which type of candy she would buy to give away. She'd probably end up buying one of everything - Maddy could never just buy one type of candy - but, it wasn't going to be for the lack of trying. Honestly, Maddy just wanted to buy one pack of candy... That was all she really needed. 

"Huh... Should I get some Sour Patch Kids or a bag of Tootsie Pops? Or should I just get this assortment of candy bars? There's too much good candy..."
