"I do, I do! I’ve never seen a little statue as pretty as this one before!"
"I...have others, if you...."
"...would you like to see them?"
"O-Oh...Hello there.." the redhead spoke in a soft voice, tilting her head at the boy.
"Hello." Quasimodo hesitated, his voice faltering and quiet. He looked away and wrung his hands together. "What…are you doing up here?"
The redhead followed after, taken aback as he hides his face. “O-Okay..Uhm…I-I’m Ariana by the way..”
"And I'm...Quasimodo," he said with a little sigh. "It's...it's nice to meet you." He glanced back to her quickly, trying to smile.
"Oh, my gosh…she’s beautiful. Did you make this?”
"I did! She was one of my first, and...."
"...I'm glad you like her."
"O-Oh...Hello there.." the redhead spoke in a soft voice, tilting her head at the boy.
"Hello." Quasimodo hesitated, his voice faltering and quiet. He looked away and wrung his hands together. "What…are you doing up here?"
Ariana quirked a brow, a bit disappointed at the fact that he didn’t want to be seen, but she smiled anyway and went towards the ladder to follow Quasimodo up. “Oh, Thank you so much..! ”
"You're...you're welcome." He continued to hobble towards the bells, unable to keep from being...well, not happy, but at least somewhat energized. It was weird getting people up here, but...at least she seemed nice.
"Oh…is this for me?"
"Y...yes. I thought you might...I don't know, it seemed like...well, here."

"Hmm… Well that’s funny. I don’t see any." "Any what?" "Monster lines. Not a single one."
We shall not try to give the reader an idea of that tetrahedral nose, that horseshoe mouth, that little left eye obstructed with a red, bushy, bristling eyebrow, while the right eye disappeared entirely beneath an enormous wart; of those teeth in disarray, broken here and there, like the embattled parapet of a fortress; of that callous lip, upon which one of those teeth encroached, like the tusk of an elephant; of that forked chin; and above all, the expression spread over the whole; of that mixture of malice, amazement, and sadness. Let the reader dream of this whole, if he can. […]the grimace was his face. Or rather, his whole person was a grimace. A huge head bristling with red hair; between his shoulders an enormous hump, a counterpart perceptible in front; a system of thighs and legs so strangely astray that they could touch each other only at the knees, and, viewed from the front, resembled the crescents of two scythes joined by the handles; large feet, monstrous hands; […]Such was the pope whom the fools had just chosen for themselves. One would have pronounced him a giant who had been broken and badly put together again.
— “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” by Victor Hugo
❧ — } Such fear in his falling away, there was! What could possibly have him so startled? Surely she hadn’t raised her voice so loud, or scolded him so sharply? Just in case, she quieted her timbre further, and clasped the thin hem of her robe over her partially exposed bosom, tying it off at the waist. That would do, for now. Bare feet fell chanced a scarce step toward him, concern lacing her voice as she posed. "Hey, now…it’s alright… …no harm done, right?” Why was he hiding his face…?
As she stepped closer, he pulled the hood down further and drew further back. Such an action typically just made people more curious, but how could he know that? From his life in the bell tower, he watched people, but such minute actions and reactions were lost to him.
"R-r-right, thank you, I-I-I'll just--" --be on my way. --get out of your way. --be anywhere other than here.
Quasimodo tried to stand up, ignoring the smarting of his side where he'd hit the ground, but slipped once more. He'd expected after all his time spent tossing himself around the cathedral like a monkey that simply walking on the streets below would be child's play. Thus, his steps would prove to be faltering and futile.
He knew pride came before a fall, but surely a little self-confidence shouldn't cause this much disaster.
❧ — } Poor thing. The fear for her well-being was clear upon his tongue. It touched her soul, that he should worry for her so. It meant something significant, something deep which transcended the soul or the mortal coil to be counted as friends. Brother and sister in spirit. Two souls which touch without mingling. Two fingers on the same hand. To be a piece of Quasimodo meant more to Esmeralda than the young man might imagine himself. "I’m sorry to have worried you, my friend. And you? Have you been safe? You look pale. Have you seen the sunlight today?” She smiled, breaking away from him just enough to move toward the outer corridors of his chasm of stone. The sun was just beginning to set. "Your master is across the city. Don’t worry. I saw him there, so I came to see you. Won’t you watch the sunset with me? I can’t stay long.”
"Yes, I've...I've been safe." He fumbled over his words because he still hadn't gotten used to her attention or familiarity, because he only knew to hide from people, because somehow they never quite seemed to work when he was around her. "And the sun! I've...seen it...."
I must sound so inadequate.
At her mention of Frollo, his heart tightened. He might not be here now. He might not be here soon. He might not be here today. But someday, sometime, someway he would return.
And if any of those moments happened to be ones where she was with him, if ever once his master realized that she was visiting, whether from catching her in the act, or some stray scent, something Quasimodo, in his stupidity, forgot to forget--
But the idea of watching the sunset, spending time with her right now pushed all of his fears aside.
She couldn't stay long, but she was here now, and that was all that mattered.
"I would...." Quasimodo took a deep breath. He had to get the words right this time.
"I would love to watch the sunset with you."
"O-Oh...Hello there.." the redhead spoke in a soft voice, tilting her head at the boy.
"Hello." Quasimodo hesitated, his voice faltering and quiet. He looked away and wrung his hands together. "What…are you doing up here?"
“That would be wonderful…!” Ariana’s smile brightened a bit as she moved closer to the pillar and peered around it to look at Quasimodo.
He peeked around and met her eyes. Surprised, he stepped away from her and tripped backwards. Quasimodo quickly recovered and hobbled over to one of the many ladders. "Just follow me."
❧ — } Dark skin kissed by the sun was covered, the silk of her robe held fast about the swell of her nearly exposed bust. Scarlet lips sharing the hue of the tightly-fitted dress hanging over the nearby chair parted, shocked by the stranger’s presence. "—Can I help you? Shouldn’t you knock before barging into a lady’s dressing room…?”
He hadn't seen anything.
...had he seen anything?
He hadn't seen anything.
"I-I-I....I'm so...so sorry, miss. I, I just...." He crawled backward, scuttled really, covering his misshapen face with the hood of his cloak and hoping against hope that just as he hadn't seen anything maybe she wouldn't see anything as well. But that was just too much to ask on a day when everything seemed to be conspiring against him.
All he needed now was for Frollo to show up.
"I'll leave. I didn't mean to. I'm...."
I'm sorry.
❧ — } "—There you are…" Gleaming pearls parted the rouged seam of her lips, the familiar sight of his visage a comfort to her where it may be a terror to others. Soft fingertips traced the edge of the brass echo as she exited the shell, climbing another small set of stairs to cup his unbalanced cheeks betwixt her palms. She knelt, wrapping her arms about his hunched shoulders in a warm embrace, though it was quick, and casual. "I’m sorry it took so long for me to come back. The whole city’s up in arms…”
He couldn't speak.
His entire life spent behind beautiful stone walls, and even that flickering moment beyond them, taught him that he was gruesome to look upon, such that even the lightest passing touch was a beacon. Even as a baby, the only one who held him was the Archdeacon, and as he grew older and further confined, there'd been no hope. Frollo certainly didn't want anything to do with him, but then, from what he could see, his master didn't want anything to do with anybody.
Yet, just as before, she with her beauty, her light, her kindness stepped into the darkness that was his realm and, once again, touched him. He hadn't known what to think when it happened, still didn't know what to think now. How could someone like her so much as brush against someone like him? And to hug him, to cup his face--
She must be an angel.
When words finally returned to him, his tongue thick in its cage, worry laced his voice.
"I'm just glad you're safe."
"O-Oh...Hello there.." the redhead spoke in a soft voice, tilting her head at the boy.
"Hello." Quasimodo hesitated, his voice faltering and quiet. He looked away and wrung his hands together. "What…are you doing up here?"
Ariana nodded and moved closer to the pillar that he was behind, blue eyes watching carefully. “W-well.. Yes.. I’ve never seen them but I heard that they’re just as beautiful to look at a-as they are to listen t-to.”
Quasimodo nodded once, and a smile lit his face. "Would you like to meet them?" He glanced away, as though seeking approval from his gargoyle friends, and turned back to her. "I can introduce you."
Reblog if you honestly think you are ugly.
“Alright then… This better not be some sort of trap door-
— Oh. That’s beautiful.”
"You like it...? I'm...I'm glad."
Headcanon #1:
Quasimodo probably knows a little bit of Latin and Classical Greek. He wasn't an avid reader and much preferred his carving and stained glass projects, but every now and again he would pick up the old books and work at understanding them.
His Latin pronunciation is, unfortunately, church Latin as opposed to that taught in current classes.
