Beloved mutuals, we gather here today-
Whenever folks ask how I met my wife, I proudly tell them: I wrote a fan letter to her because I admired her writing.
Then I pray to all gods that they do not followup: Oh? Where can I read her works?
whenever i'm trying to talk myself out of buying something i don't need i always hear my old russian professor's voice echoing in my head: "WHAT??? WILL YOU DIE THE RICHEST MAN IN THE GRAVEYARD?" and then i make an unwise financial decision
i'm so glad i happened to see these tags this is the best thing anyone has added to this post so far

Why is accessibility so inaccessible?! by TheSituationalTherapist on TikTok
[video transcript: Why is accessibility so inaccessible? I went to go see the new Venom movie and during the lock down period of coronavirus I finally accepted and acknowledged that the tinnitus I have in my ears is real, it’s a problem, and I should probably take steps to accommodate it in my life so that I don’t have unnecessary suffering. And I’ve always felt like I don’t want to take away something from someone else and so I hadn’t really addressed it and going to the movies just wasn’t great for me because i can’t hear what’s going on like there are fine words that i just cannot hear. So I decided this time if I’m gonna go to the movies at 10:15 on a Saturday when no one is there I’m going to ask for the accommodations that I need. I googled and I found out they have closed captions for people who need them. So I get to the movie theater I walk up I give my ticket, I’m a little nervous, and I ask someone standing there I was like “does this movie have closed captions?” and he goes, “yes, what you have to do is you need to go over to that man over there and you need to tell him that you need the glasses.” Now I don’t know why he started speaking real low and very slowly to me when I asked for it, but I just, that was fine. So I got my ticket I went over to the man and I said, “hey I need to get the glasses for the closed captions” and he goes, “you need- you need- you need the glasses? okay so just what you need to do is you have to go upstairs and you take a right and then there’s a black desk and you stop at the black desk” and as I was walking he gets on his walkie-talkie [mimics walkie-talkie static noise] “uh, we need a supervisor there is someone here who needs the glasses” and so, like, I feel like, did I like ask for the sword of Amun Ra like what, is it really this, like? And so I get up there to get the glasses and the man looks at me and I have to give my first name, my last name, my address, and my phone number to get some glasses? And I was like “what is all this” and he was like “well you know it’s really to you know protect the integrity,” Regal cinemas, “to protect the integrity of the glasses.” Who is going to steal some closed caption glasses for the movies? On top of that, my mans just thrusts me these glasses and this box and says enjoy the show. I’m like, this is my first time asking for something like this. Like could you, what are these buttons do? What’s gonna happen when I put the glasses? They died halfway through the movie and I didn’t realize that just because I have closed captions at home at the bottom of the screen, you know I spent the first 30 minutes of the movie looking down at the screen cause I didn’t realize you could look up and the words would be projected- Anyway, I am so sorry to individuals in the community who need accessibility, I am so sorry, I couldn’t even imagine- the burden! i felt like a burden asking for help. So Regal Cinemas, can we do better please? Please? end transcript]
When I go to the movies I always ask for the closed captioning device, and sometimes they won’t give it to me unless I let them keep my driver‘s license as collateral until I return the captioning box after the movie to make sure I won’t steal it or something…
also, the captions in the glasses are always blurry for me, I like the little box with the LCD letters like an old digital alarm clock
Even worse, this is them trying to be helpful using their accessibility training. I worked in a high public interaction field for nearly a decade with s o m a n y waves of accessibility training. I can tell you exactly the reasoning behind each of the staff members actions from the training.
The first attendant started speaking low and slow to accommodate not accidentally disclosing a potential disability to other other patrons (low) and to ensure a hard of hearing person who could lip read would be better able to process (slow). The second attendant is on the mic to ensure that someone is even there to hand out the glasses at the likely unmanned desk, since accommodation devices are kept out of the way to prevent damage, loss, and free up limited floor space (NOTE: the less frequently a device is requested, the less likely it is to available on request or for staff even know where to find it). Plus, being an out of the main traffic location makes it less likely to disclose a person’s disability to other patrons while sorting out accommodations. (Seriously, I cannot overstate how much of the training is about improper disclosure of disability leading to lawsuit and/or negative press.) The third interaction is not only getting information against loss/theft but also for corporate statistics- how often is this accommodation being requested by a theater, district, etc- for marketing, budgeting, and planning. Corporate rarely trusts tally marks from the field- having all of that personal info makes it a real person you know. *sigh*
Now the supervisor not giving instructions on usage, its hard to say if that was thoughtlessness/distracted (forgetting to ask if the patron was familiar), assumption of patrons previous usage of the tool, previous poor experiences with asking if someone need instructions on the device (This happens. I’ve had people get very upset if you offer usage of an accommodation device or ask if they are familiar with how to operate a device, making you less likely to want to offer/ask the next person), or just plain old discrimination. This example is staff following the generally accepted accessibility procedures for hard of hearing near perfectly and he’s right, the very process of it makes the requester feel like a burden. The procedures are a poor compromise of adding accessibility into a system not meant to accommodate, what you can teach to a large disparate workforce of varying levels of education and experience, minimal US governmental regulations, systemic ableism, and the drive for profit in capitalism.
*Insert discussion here about how maybe we could have better procedures if we listened more to those who are affected by those procedures and processes*

Fun family story: when my aunt was marrying her wife everyone was really excited but also dreading it because my aunt is known for her insanely long speeches so everyone knew her vows would be like 9 hours long so when it came time for her to say her vows she had a shit ton of cue cards in her hands and even her wife started groaning and my aunt took a deep inhale and then unravelled all the cue cards which were taped together and they all just read ‘HOT DAMN’ in giant letters and those were my aunts vows.
And now since I officially have permission to use this photo

It’s absolutely exhausting how many people on here are so terminally online that they just refuse to believe that anything funny or interesting happens outside of the internet
